At the Echo Arena, Liverpool, England, Saturday night, Frank Warren Promotions hosted a great night of boxing which featured four Title Bouts.

Derry Mathews of Liverpool was unsuccessful in his bid to win the WBO European Lightweight Title. Stephen ‘The Rock’ Ormond of Dublin, Ireland, successfully defended the Title for a second time by Unanimous Points Decision (98-93; 98-93; 98-92).

Afterwards he told ringside media that he had hurt his hand early in the fight but still felt he’d won the first seven rounds. He is now looking for a rematch.

Paul Butler, of Ellesmere Port, put on an impressive performance to win the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Super-Flyweight Title by Unanimous Points (120-108; 129-109; 118-110) over Ruben Montoya of Mexico.

Butler kept up the work-rate throughout the contest and looked to be ‘enjoying himself’ particularly in rounds five, six and seven.

Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith of Liverpool, successfully defended his BBBofC British Light-Middleweight Title by stopping Mark Thompson of Heywood in the fourth round. Smith dominated the fight – dropping Thompson twice in round three before forcing the stoppage in round four.

Joe Selkirk of Liverpool won the vacant WBO European Light-Middleweight Title by stopping Zoltan Sera of Budapest in round three. It was a tough three rounds for Sera who sustained a cut to the right eye in the opener, then a body shot saw the Hungarian drop to the canvas and although he was up in time for the count – Referee Steve Gray stopped the contest.

And, Enzo Maccarinelli of Swansea, Wales, stopped Courtney Fry of Liverpool in the seventh round of their ten round Light-Heavyweight Contest. This should have been Maccarinelli’s first defence of his Commonwealth (British Empire) Light-Heavyweight Title, but it was reduced to a ten-round contest when Fry failed to make the weight.

Fry was on the canvas in rounds one and six and was literally ‘saved by the bell’ at the end of the sixth round. Under pressure in the seventh round – the Liverpool man was pulled out by his corner.

Undercard results:

Craig Evans (Blackwood, Wales) v Andoni Alonso (Vitorio, Spain)
8 x 3 Lightweight Contest

Evans sustained a cut to the right eye after an accidental head clash in the fourth round then Alonso also sustained a cut (under the left eye) from an accidental clash of heads in the sixth round.

Evans gets the points win 79-74

Liam Williams (Clydach Vale, Wales) v Tyan Booth (Nottingham)
8 x 3 Middleweight Contest

Booth was warned repeatedly by Referee John Latham for pushing Williams’ head down and was deducted a point in round two. He then suffered a nasty cut to the left brow in the third and the fight was halted on advice from the ringside Doctor, resulting in a Technical Draw.

John Thain (Edinburgh) v Max Maxwell (Birmingham)
6 x 3 Middleweight Contest

Thain wins on points 60-55

Matty Fagan (Ellesmere Port) v Youssef Al Hamidi (Dewsbury)
6 x 3 Lightweight Contest

Fagan gets the points win 60-55

Ciaran McVarnock (Debut) (Belfast, N.I.) v Ivan Ruiz Garrido (Barcelona, Spain,)
4 x 3 Lightweight Contest

Debutant McVarnock gave a confident performance – sending Garrido to the canvas in round two.

The Belfast man gets off the mark with a 39-37 points win.

Liam Cullen (Northwich) v Danni Griffiths (Bridgend, Wales)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

Cullen’s gloves were low and Griffiths found the Northwich man to be easy target throughout – landing a number of headshots. Cullen’s face was bloodied by the end of the four rounds with a bruised swollen right eye and bloody nose.

Griffiths got the deserved points win 40-37 (announced incorrectly in the ring).

Josh McLaren (Stoke-on-Trent) v Daniel Carr (Trowbridge)
4 x 3 Welterweight Contest

McLaren wins on points 40-37
