At The Venue, Edgbaston, on Saturday night, Liam Conroy of Barrow-in-Furness successfully defended his English Light-Heavyweight Title by stopping Southampton’s Chris Hobbs in round nine.
Hobbs, who had sustained a cut to the left brow, bravely battled the champion in what became a rough and messy scrap at times – with both men getting warned by referee Terry O’Connor. But Hobbs sustained a shoulder injury (later reported as a dislocated shoulder) in the ninth and could not continue.
This was Conroy’s first defence of the title he won in September. His record now stands at 15 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw.
The Errol Johnson – BCB Promotions show featured four undercard bouts of action scoring wins for the home-fighters. Coventry’s Dilbag Singh outpointed Czech – Jiri Svacina over six rounds of Cruiserweight action (60-54). Tividale boxer – Stewart Davies outpointed MJ Hall of Brierley Hill in four rounds of Welterweight action (39-37). Birmingham man, Matt Sen, outpointed Ilkeston’s Russ Henshaw over four rounds of Cruiserweight action (39-38). And debutant – Super-Welterweight Mussab Abubaker from Birmingham was successful in his first pro outing when he scored a 39-37 points victory over experienced Danny Little of Driffield who was on the canvas in round two.
