Friday night at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, England, PJ Rowson and Errol Johnson of First Team Promotions hosted a fight night headlined by a female title bout.

The night should have been headlined by local-man Steve Savilles’ defence of the Midlands Lightweight title against Stoke’s Gary Reid, but Saville pulled out last week with an injury.

Lyndsey Scragg of Wednesbury faced last minute opponent Kristine ‘Krissy’ Shergold of Paignton, for the Global Boxing Council Female Super-Featherweight title.

Scragg was originally scheduled to face Florea Lihet, but when Lihet pulled out, Shergold stepped in at short notice.

Enjoying the big crowd support, a confident Scragg entered the ring where a nervous-looking Shergold waited. It turned out to be a closely matched and busy contest which saw a determined effort from Shergold, who seemed to grow in confidence from the first bell.

Experienced Scragg scored throughout with the right and left straight while Shergold had success with the long-reaching left.

Scragg targets the body on her corner’s instructions and a big right ‘thumps’ in to the chest of Shergold mid-way through the bout.

Throwing in a big right hook in round seven, Scragg must have been frustrated at Shergold’s resilience.

In round nine Shergold loses her gumsield and as Scragg waits in the corner, we can see an ‘egg’ of a lump beginning to grow on her forehead, but she’s undeterred and waves her gloves aloft to the crowd.

Mid-way through the tenth and final round Scragg sustains a terrible cut to the left eye area. It’s a gaping wound which immediately starts to pour blood. Referee Terry O’Connor calls her over to the corner where Bob Plant wipes away the claret and O’Connor lets fighting resume.

Luckily for Scragg it was in the last round and she sees it through to the final bell, winning on points, 96-94, against a very game opponent .

Scragg improves to 9 wins (3 by KO) and 1 loss.

Other undercard action last night included:

Dean Harrison (Wolverhampton) v Ali Wyatt (Torquay)
6 Round Light Welterweight Contest

There was big crowd support for the ‘weightier’ looking Deano, who scored a 60-55 points win over the Devonshire man. Harrison improves to 15 wins (4 by KO) 2 losses (1 by KO).

Rhys Davies (Coventry) v Michael Banbula (Staines)
6 Round Light-Heavyweight Contest

‘Sweet Chocolate’ Davies secured a 59-55 points win over Polish-born Banbula. Davies’s record now stands at 2 wins and 1 draw.

Rob Doody (Tipton) v Karl Taylor (Birmingham)
6 Round Welterweight Contest

Doody notched up his second pro-win, 60-54, against tough veteran Taylor.

Ben Wilkes v Davey Jones
6 Round Super Middleweight Contest

Wilkes scored a fifth Round TKO over Jones when he landed a peach of a body-shot which sent Jones to his knee and unable to make the count. Wilkes improves to 3 wins (1 by KO).

Neil Perkins (Birmingham) v Jason Callum (Coventry)
6 Round Heavyweight Contest

Birmingham heavyweight Perkins won by TKO Round three when Callum sustained a cut to the middle of his forehead. I didn’t see it but it was apparently a clash of heads that caused it. Perkins wins by third round TKO and improves to 4 wins (1 by KO).

James Mulhern (Coventry) v Francis Croes
4 Round Flyweight Contest

Fast and busy, Mulhern impressed with his speed, dodging Croes shots and nipping in quick with the hooks.
Mulhern notches up his second pro-win on points, 40-36.

Chris Lewis (Wolverhampton) v Carl Allen
4 Round Light Welterweight Contest

A messy and frustrating fight for everyone! Both men seemed ‘locked together’ for the duration and it was not pretty to watch! Lewis wins on points, 39-37, and improves to 7 wins no losses.

Daniel Walton (Birmingham) v Anthony Hanna (Birmingham)
4 Round Featherweight Contest

Teenager Walton was disappointed to get a 38-38 draw against a delighted Hanna, who goes to 22 wins (8 by KO) 81 losses (3 by KO) and 8 draws while Walton sees his record to 1 win and 1 draw.

Bobby Wood (Walsall) v Ernie Smith (Stourport)
4 Round Middleweight Contest

Wood had a great second contest against veteran Ernie ‘Gypsy Boy’ Smith. knocking him down in round one. Smith was counted again in round two for momentarily touching the canvas, despite his protestations. Wood was clearly pleased with his 40-34 points win over tough Smith.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
