O’Shaquie Foster vs Raymond Ford Preview: WBC Title Fight Headlines Houston Card
The super featherweight division has quietly become one of the better weight classes in boxing, and Saturday night in Houston could shake it up again. O’Shaquie Foster defends the WBC World Super Featherweight title against former featherweight champion Raymond Ford at the Fertitta Center, live on DAZN.
It’s a really interesting fight stylistically. Foster can make good fighters look lost when he settles into rhythm, but Ford is younger, sharp technically, and seems convinced he can drag the champion into a rougher kind of fight than Foster usually likes. There’s been a bit of edge between them all week too, which never hurts.
Main Event: O’Shaquie Foster vs Raymond Ford
O’Shaquie Foster (24-3-0) puts the WBC World Super Featherweight belt on the line over 12 rounds against Raymond Ford (18-1-1).
Foster has become one of those fighters people appreciate more after watching him a few times. He’s awkward without looking messy, defensively sharp, and excellent at slowing opponents down mentally. Some fighters get frustrated trying to pin him down and end up fighting at his pace instead of their own.
Ford moving up from featherweight adds another layer to this one. He’s quick, aggressive in spots, and probably fresher physically at super featherweight after making the lower limit for years. The big question is whether he can consistently close distance without getting picked apart on the way in.
There’s also the possibility this turns into a much more tactical fight than some fans expect. Foster is perfectly happy winning rounds cleanly rather than chasing chaos, while Ford has hinted he wants to prove a point by forcing exchanges. Somebody is going to have to give a little.
Houston should be lively for it too. Foster fighting in Texas always seems to bring extra energy.
Co-Feature and Key Fights
Miguel Flores (29-5-1) faces Javon Woodard Jr (16-2-0) in a 10-round featherweight fight that feels like it could end up stealing attention from the headline bout if it catches fire early.
Flores has been around good competition for years and usually comes to fight. Woodard is the younger man and probably needs this kind of win more at this stage. It has that “don’t blink for the first few rounds” feel to it.
Unbeaten lightweight prospect Charlie Sheehy (12-0-0) steps in against Nike Theran (20-2-0) over 10 rounds. This is a proper step-up matchup on paper. Theran’s record suggests Sheehy won’t get an easy night, and that’s probably exactly what Matchroom wants to see from the prospect now.
Another unbeaten fighter to watch is Omari Jones (6-0-0), who meets fellow unbeaten Diego Zuniga (9-0-0) in an eight-round super welterweight contest. Matching unbeaten fighters this early is refreshing honestly. Somebody’s momentum is going.
Non-Title Undercard
Zaquin Moses (6-0-0) takes on Travis Crawford (7-6-0) in a six-round super featherweight bout. Moses continues to stay active and looks like another young fighter Matchroom are trying to move steadily.
Julian Montalvo (6-0-0) meets Maximus Moya (3-3-0) over six rounds at super featherweight. Montalvo has been busy early in his career and will want to keep that momentum going.
Frank Espinoza (3-0-0) faces Bryce Blackwell (4-2-0) in a six-round middleweight fight. Still early days for Espinoza, but these are the sort of fights where prospects need to start showing more than just flashy moments.
Jahyden Franklin Britton (8-0-0) squares off with Najee West (9-2-0) over six rounds at super middleweight. West has enough experience to ask awkward questions if Britton switches off for even a round or two.
Closing Thoughts
Foster vs Ford feels like one of those fights that could either become a clever technical battle or suddenly turn nasty halfway through once tempers rise. Either way, it’s a strong Matchroom card on paper with several unbeaten prospects getting meaningful tests instead of soft touches.
And honestly, Foster vs Ford is the kind of matchup boxing needs more often — champions and top contenders meeting before everybody starts protecting rankings and waiting around.
