Emanuel Navarrete vs O’Shaquie Foster: Fight Preview
Three super featherweight belts are on the line in San Antonio, with Emanuel Navarrete and O’Shaquie Foster meeting at the Frost Bank Center on Saturday, October 24. It is the sort of clash that should tell us a lot about who can dictate the terms when two champions with very different ideas of how to fight share a ring. DAZN has the broadcast.
Main Event: Emanuel Navarrete vs O’Shaquie Foster
Emanuel Navarrete (40-2-1) brings the WBO and IBF super featherweight titles; O’Shaquie Foster (25-3-0) has the WBC belt. A win would leave one man holding three of the division’s major titles.
The tactical question is a good one. Navarrete has talked about bringing pressure, working the body and trying to make Foster stand and trade. Foster, meanwhile, has said he plans to control the fight and make his boxing count. That puts the spotlight on whether Navarrete can disrupt Foster’s rhythm, or whether Foster can keep the champion working at a pace and distance he likes.
I’m especially interested in the early rounds. If Foster settles into his preferred rhythm, Navarrete may have to take risks to change it; if Navarrete can make the fight uncomfortable from the start, Foster’s control will be tested. There’s plenty at stake, but the styles and the question of who gets to lead the dance are what make this one compelling.
Co-Main / Key Fights
Unbeaten featherweight Albert Gonzalez (18-0-0) faces Edward Vazquez (20-3-0) in the co-feature. Gonzalez has the unbeaten record, while Vazquez brings experience against strong opposition, including previous world title challenges. This feels like a useful step-up test for Gonzalez, with Vazquez looking to show he remains a difficult night for anyone.
Frank Martin (19-1-1) meets Tarik Zaina (18-3-1) at super light. Martin’s record includes a draw, and this is a chance to get back to winning ways; Zaina has a solid record of his own and can make that return complicated.
Other Title Fights
There is a second title fight on the card as Steven Navarro (9-1-0) meets unbeaten Emanuel Moreno (13-0-0) at bantamweight for the vacant NABO title. They have history from the amateurs: Navarro won their previous meeting on a split decision. Now they get to settle it as professionals, with Moreno still unbeaten and Navarro coming in with one loss.
Undercard
Unbeaten lightweight Deric Davis (12-0-0) takes on Joaquin Silva Faccio (10-1-0).
Lightweights Samuel Contreras (8-0-0) and Oscar Pedroza Padilla (8-2-1) are also on the bill.
At super bantamweight, Daniel III Cortez (13-1-0) faces Joshua Montoya (8-5-2).
The card opens with super welterweights Joseph Almajdi (5-1-0) and Miqal Dolphus (6-0-1).
Navarrete-Foster is the obvious draw, but the supporting card has a couple of fights with real questions attached. The main event should answer the biggest one: can Foster keep the fight on his terms when Navarrete starts pressing?
