Ibbotson Stops Anthony At Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium

ByJane Warburton 30/07/201102/08/2011

At the Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield, Friday night – Dennis Hobson Promotions hosted a show of eight contests. The event – which provided some thrilling action – will probably be remembered most for the shocking nose injury sustained by Referee Michael Alexander during the Reagan Denton v Jody Meikle fight.

The Dinner Show also marked the recent passing of former boxer – Tom ‘T Bar’ Bradley, as a result of a motorbike accident. On finishing his boxing career in 1999, Tom opened his own gym – ‘Tough Guys’ and spent a lot of effort establishing it within the community, working with local students and young boxers. Tom’s son – Max, was in the ring on Friday night to accept gifts and photo’s from Dennis Hobson Promotions.

Jon Ibbotson (Sheffield) v John Anthony (Doncaster)
6 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

The head-lining bout saw local man – Jon ‘Ibbo’ Ibbotson, score a third round knockdown of John Anthony in their scheduled six round Cruiser-weight Contest.
Ibbotson improves to 15 wins (6 by KO) 2 losses (1 by KO) and 1 draw.

He now goes on to face Neil Dawson for the vacant British Masters Cruiserweight Title. Anthony’s record now stands at 7 wins (5 by KO) 18 losses (3 by KO) and 1 draw.

Femi Fehintola (Bradford) v Billy Smith (Stourport)
6 x 2 Lightweight Contest

Friday saw the return of Femi ‘Fire’ Fehintola. The likeable Bradford man faced last minute opponent – experienced ‘Gypsy Boy’ Smith, after a break of 19 months. A cautious contest from the Clinton Woods trained Fehintola sees him get the points win 60-54.

He improves to 22 wins (1 by KO) 2 losses (2 by KO), while Smith’s record now stands at 12 wins 97 losses (8 by KO) and 2 draws.

Reagan Denton (Sheffield) v Jody Meikle (Scunthorpe)
6 x 2 Middleweight Contest

Popular ‘Dynamite’ Denton won this six rounder on points, but the contest will be largely remembered for the nose injury suffered by Referee Michael Alexander at the end of the third round. As both boxers were moving quickly across the canvas – they backed in to Referee Alexander who was unable to move out of the way quickly enough and suffered a nasty cut across the nose.

The bell ended the round (luckily!) and – pouring with blood – Referee Alexander was helped out of the ring and replaced by a waiting Steve Gray. Referee Alexander was later given 5 stitches to close the wound.

Denton improves to 13 wins (2 by KO) and 1 loss, while Meikle drops to 1 win 12 losses.

Steven Swinburn (Lincoln) v Jason Nesbitt (Birmingham)
4 x 3 Welterweight Contest

Lincoln Man Swinburn was due to box Aaron Fox but instead faced late substitute – experienced Nesbitt. Nesbitt – who had to take a count for touching down – used the left to the head but was always looking to throw the big right. Swinburn kept the tough-veteran at bay to secure a points win 40-35.

Swinburn improves to 5 wins (1 by KO) and 1 draw, while Nesbitt’s record now stands at 9 wins (6 by KO) 133 losses (11 by KO) and 3 draws.

Carl Wild (Sheffield) v Elvis Dube (Derby)
4 x 3 Light Heavyweight Contest

Shinfields’ boxer – Dube made short work of his opponent – scoring a knockdown mid-way through the opener. Wild got to his feet for the end of the count but the contest was waved off by Referee Michael Alexander.

Dube improves to 4 wins (3 by KO) 10 losses (2 by KO). Wild drops to 10 wins (1 by KO) 16 losses (5 by KO) and 3 draws.

Danny Tombs (Sheffield) v Billy Boyle (Sheffield)
4 x 3 Light Heavyweight Contest

Tattooed Tombs was finding his target early on in this contest as ‘People’s Poet’ Boyle’s face was awash with blood by the end of the opener. Despite this, tough-Boyle lands some clubbing shots in the second frame – but Tombs is relentless and Boyle looks a mess as the fight progresses.

The uppercuts almost see Boyle off in the fourth and final round and he does well to keep going till the bell. Tombs wins on points 39-37 and improves to 6 wins (3 by KO) 1 loss and 2 draws. Boyle drops to 13 wins (7 by KO) 11 losses (4 by KO).

Hassan Ahmed (Sheffield) v Andy Roberts (Doncaster)
6 x 2 Feather-weight Contest

Debutant ‘Hurricane’ Ahmed notched up his first pro-win against experienced Roberts on points 60-55. Roberts drops to 15 wins (3 by KO) 22 losses (4 by KO) and 6 draws.

Jamie Ward (Sheffield) v Adam Stretton (Swadlincote)
6 x 2 Light Heavyweight Contest

A closely-fought contest with Ward securing the points win despite being on the canvas in the opening round. Ward improves to 3 wins (1 by KO) 1 loss (1 by KO) while Stretton gets his second loss of two.

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]
