Other action at the Dennis Hobson Fight Academy card at FM Hallam Arena in Sheffield, England on Saturday night’s Clinton Woods vs. Julio Gonzalez rematch saw Mark Hobson of Huddersfield slug it out in a return with John Keaton of Sheffield in a 12 round contest for the British Cruiserweight Title.

It was a sloppy start to the bout as both fighters were fired up and keen to impress. At one point, Hobson’s head was through the ropes! There were some mighty bodyshots from both men and Keaton seemed to be throwing everything he’d got!

Round two and Keatons’ legs buckle from a heavy punch from Hobson. He wobbles all over the canvas but miraculously keeps upright and is literally saved by the bell. Hobson has sustained a swelling in the left eyelid as he returns to his corner for the intermission.

Round three started and then was stopped after seconds when the corner realised they had forgotten to put Hobsons’ gumshield in. The action was halted again mid-way through the round because Hobsons’ shorts had slipped well below his protective belt. Keaton again was saved by the bell and he hangs on after enduring the power of Hobsons punches.

After 1 min 22 seconds of round four, referee Howard Foster stops the contest – Keaton in no condition to continue. He’d taken a battering and his legs had never been able to recover properly. Hobson had sustained a cut and swelling above the left eye.

Hobson improves to 27-5-1 (14) and wins the British Cruiserweight title for the second time. Keaton falls to 26-16 (16).

Former British Champion Scott Gammer of Pembroke, Wales faced John McDermott of Essex for a 10 round British Heavyweight Title Eliminator.

Gammer always looks the fittest in a heavyweight duel – a big guy but keeping a toned physique and last night was no exception as he faced the rather chubbier looking McDermott (!)

But this was a tough contest for the big Welshman who never settled in to the fight. Looking frustrated throughout, it seemed he was waiting for something.

McDermott kept up a continuous jab and his promoter Frank Maloney, looking on from ringside, egged him on with praise and instruction.

“Come on, Scott, use the jab!” Gammer’s corner shouted, also frustrated. Behind us, WBO Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Maccarinelli was also trying to spur Gammer on.

McDermott kept focussed and continued to chip away throughout the 10 rounds. It was no surprise that McDermott had the points win, 98-93.

McDermott sees his record to 23-2 (15) while Gammer falls to 18-2-1 (9) and declares his retirement from the ring.
