Boxing In South And Central America: Weekend Results

There weren’t any big shows this weekend but there was a good bit of action strung out across Central and South America and going alphabetically, we begin in Argentina.

On Saturday at Club Atletico Adelante in Sante Fe, Alejandro Daniel Gomez, 9-16-3 (2), reversed last December’s loss to crosstown local rival Oscar Jesus Pereyra, 14-1 (10), in a big upset to capture Pereyra’s WBA Fedelatin Lightweight title.

31 year old Gomez was ceding eight years of age to the previously undefeated prospect but the iron chin and long experience of “El Pato” eventually won the day.

Another upset took place on the bill when Chubut super flyweight Sebastian Eladio Ferreyra, 5-7-2 (3), took South American Flyweight Champion Santiago Ivan Acosta, 15-1-2 (7), the distance and forced a draw in a six round non-title bout.

Friday night at Club Atletico Penarol in Buenos Aires saw local man Gustavo Javier Kapusi, 19-12-3 (7), return from an IBF Pan Pacific Super Middleweight title fight loss to Sakio Bika in April by posting a six round points victory over Julian Alcides Pino, 6-7-1 (2), at cruiserweight.

Next up, Brazil, where on Saturday night at Centro Universitario Italo-Brasileiro in Sao Paulo, former world title challenger Giovanni Andrade, 58-11 (48), won two small regional belts at super bantam by stopping Argentina’s Jorge Antonio Paredes, 20-14-3 (5), in the seventh frame.

On Friday in Sao Paulo, heavyweight Raphael Zumbano, 15-3-1 (14), forced a retirement of 43 year old former Brazilian titlist Carlos Barcelete, 20-16-2 (10), after five rounds of action to retain the WBC Mundo Hispano title at Companhia Athletica Brooklyn.

On Friday at the Coliseo de Combate in Cartegena, Colombia, featherweight Jose Miguel Payares, 8-1 (6), outpointed experienced veteran Arcelio Ibarra, 12-10 (8), and super feather Ricardo Marriaga, 5-1-1 (3), decisioned southpaw campaigner Pablo Osuna, 11-15-2 (9), both over eight rounds.

We head north now and hit Mexico, where at Explanda Tecate in Navojoa on Saturday, Interim Mexican Featherweight titlist Leonilo Miranda, 30-0 (28), notched another KO on his belt in the biggest fight of his career by finishing off former WBO Bantamweight Champion Cruz Carbajal, 29-16-2 (25), in eight rounds.

Also seeing action in Navojoa was super flyweight Francisco Arce, 27-4-2 (18), who stopped Rodolfo Garay, 19-13-1 (10), in a rematch of their bout in January of a similar result and world class flyweight Manuel Vargas, 24-3-1 (10), was held to a draw by world class light flyweight Lorenzo Trejo, 30-16-1 (17), after eight rounds of combat.

On Friday, the action in Mexico could be found at Auditorio Benito Juarez in Los Mochis where the very experienced Cristian Favela, 16-16-1 (10), was held to a ten round draw by Efren Guerrero, 16-7-4 (12), who had to climb off the canvas in the sixth.

We finish up this report at Palacio Penarol in Montevideo, Uruguay where on Saturday, local women’s light welter Chris Namus, 6-0 (1), knocked out Mexico’s Perla Hernandez, 5-5-1 (1), in the first round for the WIBA Youth title.

Also on the bill, WBO Latino Light Middleweight titlist Rafael Sosa Pintos, 30-2 (12), posted a six round decision over Nicolas Perillo, 4-9 (1), in a non-title middleweight bout.
