Boxing Prospect Shumenov Calls Out World Champions Erdie, Garay

ByBoxing Press 12/05/2009

Light heavyweight sensation Beibut Shumenov, fresh off of his impressive fourth-round stoppage of former two-time world champion Byron “Slama from Bama” Mitchell on Saturday night in Kazakhstan, has set his sights on a major world title fight against WBO champion Zsolt Erdei or WBA title holder Hugo Garay.

Saturday’s show in Shumenov’s hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan, presented by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis, was taped live for airings, schedule soon to be announced, in North America and Internationally.

2004 Kazakhstan Olympian Shumenov, 8-0 (6), 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, has been procuring title belts at an alarming rate during his relatively young pro career.

Already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC, he added the=2 0IBA World championship to his growing collection, also retaining his WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and PABA Interim titles with his dominant display of speed and strength against NABA USA light heavyweight champion Mitchell, 27-5-1 (20).

In his last three fights, the 25-year-old Shumenov has defeated two former world champions, Mitchell and Montell Griffin, in addition to world title challenger Epifanio Mendoza, and the trio had a combined record of 104-16-2 going into their respective fights against Beibut.

“It was great fighting at home and I want to thank Byron Mitchell for replacing Alejandro Berrio on such late notice,” an ambitious Beibut said. “

He still has the heart of a champion and it showed in the ring. I grateful for winning the IBA World title and now I’m ready for more challenges. “I really want to fight Erdei or Garay and I’m hopeful that one of them steps-up to give me an opportunity to fight for their world title crown.”

Former IBF light middleweight Roman “Made In Hell” Karmazin, 39-3-1 (24), fought at home for the first time in seven years, defeating Luis “Tyson” Augusto Dos Santos, 24-16 (20), by fourth-round technical knockout.

The comeback of former WBO light welterweight champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley, 34-11 (20), moved forward thanks to his victory by eighth-round TKO versus former Brazilian lightweight champion Sidney Siqueira, 12-4-1 (7).

Four-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion Gayrat Ahmedov, 11-0-1 (7), had a dramatic KZ Event Productions debut, putting WBC Latino and Brazilian title-holder Luzimar “Tiger of Itacre” Gonzaga, 25-5 (20,) to sleep in the opening round.

“We were honored to promote this show at home in Kazakhstan and are excited about fans in North America having the chance to watch it on taped delay,” Chingis commented. “My brother, Beibut, proved that he’s ready for Erdei or Garay and we’ll be contacting their promoters soon about making a fight.

“Mitchell was a true warrior and we’re fortunate that a world-class fighter like him was able and willing to replace Berrio. Our friend, Roman Karmazin, showed that he’s ready for another world title fight. We’re happy that ‘Chop Chop’ Corley came back so strong after being robbed in his last fight and Gayrat couldn’t have had a more impressive debut for KZ Event Productions.

“We’re interested in signing other fighters to build a world-class stable. Overall, it was a great show and we want to thank all of the loyal Kazakhstan boxing=2 0fans who turned out. We look forward to promoting our next show in the United States.”
