On Sunday afternoon, at the ‘packed’ Heritage Hotel in Derby, England – Clifton Mitchell of Mitchell Promotions hosted a fight card which would see some exciting action from both male and female boxers.

First up, local woman Suzanne Hemsley faced Kristine ‘Krissy’ Shergold of Paignton, Devon, in a six round lightweight contest.

‘Bigger’ Shergold gave Hemsley a tough time from the start, landing a notable big left punch at the end of round two. Hemsley picked-up in round three to throw some solid right uppercuts, but doesn’t look happy with herself as she sits in the corner at the end of the round.

A frustrated Clifton Mitchell urges his charge to “believe in yourself !” and Hemsley uses the big right uppercut again in round four. Shergold sustains a cut to the left brow during the round.

In the fifth, as Hemsley tries to settle in, Shergold sinks in some solid body-punches. Both ladies throw punches after the bell and they ‘eyeball’ each other. It’s been a good round for Shergold and again Mitchell and sparring partner Lyndsey Scragg encourage Hemsley as she waits to start the sixth and final round.

In the sixth, Shergold lands some big punches to Hemsley’s face but she ‘blinks’ them off and ‘digs-in’ to secure a draw at 58-58, or so she thought!

It seems afterward that record cards had been totted up incorrectly and Hemsley secures her second professional win.

Next up, veteran slugger Karl Taylor of Birmingham faced home favourite Scott Conway in a six round light middleweight contest.

There was big support for the Derby man, but Taylor was in fine form and gave Conway a testing six rounds. Conway was ‘wobbled’ by Taylor’s big swinging overhand right in every round, but managed to secure a points win 58-56.

A disappointed Karl Taylor made a sharp exit after the decision as Conway improves to 4-4-2 (1).

The first of two title bouts starts with the welterweight contest between Dave ‘Rocky’ Ryan of Derby and Scott ‘Scottie’ Evans of Stourbridge as they fight for the vacant British Midlands area title.

But it was a short night’s work for the home-boy as Evans is down on the canvas in round two. He gets up from the count, but moments later is topped by referee Terry O’Connor.

Ryan wins by TKO round two and improves to 9-1 (2).

Next saw the heavyweight action between big-guys Michael Skierniewski of Stoke and Shane McPhilbin of Nottingham.

Skierniewski uses the big right punch while McPhilbin targets the body with his right and the head with his left straight. This was McPhilbin’s professional debut and he was delighted with his fourth round TKO over the Nottingham man.

Lastly, Matt ’Left Hook’ Hainy of Derby faced Sam Horton of Dudley for the vacant Midlands Area Super Middleweight title.

There was huge support for Hainy as the fight began and the crowd were in for a treat – as this turned out to be a real cracker of a contest!

Both men started out steady, but Hainy sustains a cut already to the left brow in the second round. It’s not a bad cut and fighting continues. Horton scores with big rights to the body and lefts to the head of the local-man, who finds himself on the canvas in round three.

It’s a fast-paced contest and by the fourth, both men are already starting to look tired from their efforts. Horton sustains a cut to the left eye area in round five and referee Terry O’Connor consults the corner – it’s a much worse cut than Hainy’s but Horton continues.

Horton continues to target Hainy’s body in the sixth round with Hainy using the left to the head. It’s an action-packed fight and everyone stands on their feet to applaud at the end of the tenth and final round.

Horton wins by points decision 95-94 His record now stands at 13-0 (2).
