It was an epic fight-night at the MEN Arena in Manchester last night, with plenty of action from 11 contests including eight title bouts.

The show, promoted by Frank Warren in association with Top Rank, saw Terry ‘Turbo’ Flanagan of Manchester successfully defend, for the first time, his WBO World Lightweight Title by stopping Diego Magdaleno of Las Vegas, USA, in the second round. Magdaleno, who had trouble keeping a foot-grip on the canvas anyway, was sent to the canvas three times by Flanagan before Referee Terry O’Connor jumped in to stop the American taking further punishment.

And Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith of Liverpool won the WBO World Junior Middleweight Title after stopping John ‘Apollo Kidd’ Thompson of Newark, New Jersey, in round seven. Thompson had gotten off to a strong start against a grinning Smith, but ‘Beefy’ gained confidence and Thompson was wobbled at the end of the sixth and sent to the canvas in the seventh.

At the ‘Plus+1 Bar’ at Manchester Arena yesterday afternoon, boxers weighed in ahead of the ‘World World III’ event in Manchester, England tonight which features no less than eight title bouts.

The show, promoted by Frank Warren in association with Top Rank, will see Terry ‘Turbo’ Flanagan of Manchester defend, for the first time, his WBO Lightweight Title against Diego Magdaleno of Las Vegas, USA, and Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith of Liverpool face John ‘Apollo Kidd’ Thompson of Newark, New Jersey, for the vacant WBO Junior Middleweight Title.

It was a rowdy atmosphere at the Plus+1 Bar with huge support for Flanagan – the crowd chanting ‘Turbo, Turbo, Turbo’ as Magdaleno stepped up to the scales first, weighing in at 9 stone 8 lb 11 oz.[134.75 lb]
Flanagan tipped the scales at 9 st 9 lbs [135 lb].

Heads were pressed together during the face-off but both men then shook hands.

There had been a heated exchange of words at the press conference this week between Liam Smith and John Thompson but they were quiet yesterday during their weigh-in. Smith scaled 10 st 13 lb ¾ oz [153 lb] while Thompson came in at 10st 12 lb 4 oz [152.25 lb]. (more…)
