Lara Put WBA 154 Belt At Risk Tonight In Chicago
Light middleweight Erislandy Lara puts his WBA crown on the line tonight at the UIC Pavillion in Chicago as the native Cuban faces off against two-time former world title challenger Delvin Rodriguez.
Crafty southpaw Lara, 20-2-2 (12), acquired the belt in his most recent appearance by widely outpointing Ishe Smith in December of last year and will be a big favorite against Connecticut resident Rodriguez, 28-7-4 (16).
The challenger has had mixed fortunes since losing a bid for the vacant IBF welter title to Issac Hltashwayo in 2009, going 4-5 (2) over that span, including a loss against WBA super middle champ Austin Trout in 2012.
Lara finally got to fight for the full WBA belt after losing to Canelo Alvarez and defeating Trout for the Interim version and in his first appearance as a world champion, he should be a very difficult proposition for Rodriguez.
Although he doesn’t have the sheer skill of Lara, Rodriguez, 28-7-4 (16), can be a very dangerous opponent if he enjoys early success as it will lead to confidence and momentum.
Rodriguez is taller than Lara but there’s no way he’s going to outpoint the slick Cuban left from the outside so will have to take chances to get inside and force the champion to trade.
If Lara does stick to his strengths of the jab, movement and timely counters, this might not be a difficult bout for him but if he has overlooked Rodriguez and hasn’t trained properly, he could have stamina issues that leads to a shoulder to shoulder slugfest. (more…)

Khan, Lara, Lee, Benavidez Big Winners This Weekend
We start on Friday night at Illusions Theater in San Antonio, America where Erislandy Lara, 20-2-2 (12), outpointed Ishe Smith, 26-7 (12), for the WBA light middle title.
Southpaw Lara simply was too quick and elusive for Smith, who briefly held the IBF crown in 2013, as the judges awarded the Cuban all three score cards by margins of 119-109, 119-109 and 117-111.
After the contest, Lara reportedly expressed his desire for a showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr, but with “Money” himself making media headlines this week by calling for a clash with Manny Pacquiao, Lara is likely out of luck.
On Saturday, there were two big bills in America’s Boxing capital of Las Vegas with British welterweight Amir Khan emerging as the big winner.
Khan, 30-3 (19), showed great maturity in successfully defending his WBC silver title with a brilliant performance against former two-weight world champion Devon Alexander, 26-3 (14), at MGM Grand casino.
Adding an intelligent approach to his already lighting-quick fists, Khan repeatedly baffled the southpaw Alexander, nipping in to reel off sharp combinations before heading back outside.
Alexander occasionally scored with single shots but Khan controlled the pace of the contest along with when and where engagements occurred, posting a 120-108, 119-109 and 118-110 shutout on the scorecards. (more…)

Maliganggi, Lara Win, Bika Draws, Alexander Dethroned
In the much hyped “Battle of Brooklyn” that took place last night at New York’s Barclays Center, Paulie Malignaggi pulled away from Zab Judah over 12 rounds, winning a wide decision in a bout for the NABF welter strap to headline a big show.
Judah, 42-9 (29), dropped Malignaggi, 33-5 (7), in the second but that was the sole positive the former two-weight world champion took from this contest as “Super Judah” looked every bit of his 36 years of age.
The southpaw simply couldn’t keep up with the pace that the 33 year old Malignaggi set, as the “Magic Man” was on his toes the entire bout, never letting Judah get in range of get set to go on the offensive.
Not surprisingly, Malignaggi swept the cards by scores of 117-110, 117-110, 116-111.
In a battle of southpaws for the WBA light middle title, Erislandy Lara, 19-1-2 (12), outboxed former belt owner Austin Trout, 26-2 (14), over 12 rounds by scores of 118-109, 117-110, 117-110.
Trout tried to come to grips with the Cuban but had difficulty dealing with the more mobile Lara, who countered the former champion ceaselessly. Lara nailed Trout in the 11th frame, dropping the New Mexico man, who beat the count and finished the fight on his feet. (more…)
