Thread: WHO would make a great trainer, post boxing career?

Well, who do you think has it in them to be a good/great trainer?

Considering how Wlad has turned to Johnathon Banks, post Emmanuel Steward's death, turned into a trainer. How do you feel he represents current fighters at this stage turning into full scale trainers and/or fighters that are fighting right now, after their retiring, turning into great trainers??

Current fighters, now. Not retired fighters.

I think guys who got by with their brains more than just natural ability would make the best trainers. So that said....

Wladimir Klitschko

and although he is extremely skilled as well Floyd Mayweather Jr. might could train a fighter or two it is a skill that certainly runs in the family.

I would say the only one there I feel would be a great trainer is Andre Ward. Hopkins doesn't seem to be interested in training- he likes the limelight and promotions side of the game. When your heart for the game, through your speeches and pronouncements, then you won't be successful.

As for Klit- I doubt it too. He isn't a motivated kind of person. He doesn't have that inspiration in him, as does Lennox doesn't have that in him.

Klit would be awful.

I feel Victor Ortiz can be a great trainer. He has the fire that transcends....

Hopkins and Wlad have boxing brains, Victor Ortiz does not

How many great fighters became great trainers? Or even tried? Great fighters are blessed with huge natural talent/instinct. I would bet these people have the least understanding of training someone. What is simple to them is hard for the layman.

For sure. The "virtuosos" have historically never made great trainers because, like you said, they just can't identify with the struggles of an "average" athlete. Pernell Whitaker is one of the greatest in-ring talents in the history of boxing, complete boxing royalty, and he was a mediocre trainer at best. 99.9% of boxers just can't do what he did, they can't fight how he fought.

Historically, the best trainers have been the guys with average to mediocre athletic ability, because that lack of physical gifts created a need to develop sound boxing technique and a high boxing IQ in order to compete with the more physically gifted fighters. So when I hear the news that guys like Herol Graham are deciding to become trainers, it doesn't really excite me.

I think Tyson Fury would make a great trainer he seems to promote other fighters in his stable than he does himself.

Victor Ortiz had the kind of "Experience", through his troubles, which makes him someone that can turn it around and be a good trainer. He has seen it bad- both in life and boxing. He can be a great mentor IF he does NOT get into "Hollywood"...

Enzo Mac I think will, like Gary Locket is, be a decent one. Gavin Rees maybe as well.

John Simpson could be.

Maybe not so much from a tactical perspective but I can just picture an old, grey moustached Tim Bradley whipping his boys into tremendous shape.

I can't disagree with your edit, there's really no way to know. I just listed guys that were generally smart fighters that I think each brings something to the table. For instance you crossed off Danny Garcia. Dude has great timing which comes from recognition, he's cool as a cucumber which is a plus in the corner and sticks to a gameplan like very few others. Helpful traits to pass on. I could list what I see in each but that would be incredibly long. And we don't know who has the passion, for training.
