How many great fighters became great trainers? Or even tried? Great fighters are blessed with huge natural talent/instinct. I would bet these people have the least understanding of training someone. What is simple to them is hard for the layman.

For sure. The "virtuosos" have historically never made great trainers because, like you said, they just can't identify with the struggles of an "average" athlete. Pernell Whitaker is one of the greatest in-ring talents in the history of boxing, complete boxing royalty, and he was a mediocre trainer at best. 99.9% of boxers just can't do what he did, they can't fight how he fought.

Historically, the best trainers have been the guys with average to mediocre athletic ability, because that lack of physical gifts created a need to develop sound boxing technique and a high boxing IQ in order to compete with the more physically gifted fighters. So when I hear the news that guys like Herol Graham are deciding to become trainers, it doesn't really excite me.

Victor Ortiz had the kind of "Experience", through his troubles, which makes him someone that can turn it around and be a good trainer. He has seen it bad- both in life and boxing. He can be a great mentor IF he does NOT get into "Hollywood"...
