Sergio Martinez Past His Prime ?
I keep hearing this alot but in all honestly i don't really think Martinez, looked that much different. He just fought a guy who didn't fall for that stupid clowning and picked his shots smartly.
Let's remember Martinez didn't look that great vs Barker, Macklin, either. Yes Martinez has had some good performances but i think he's got overrated on here.
Kelly Pavlik was on the downslide, Alex Bunema is basically a mediocre fighter. And Dzinziruk was very overrated which showed when he got destroyed by journeyman Brian Vera.
Credit for the Paul Williams win but it just seems to me, Martinez has got overrated by fans and experts. I mean i've even heard people compare him with a prime RJJ which is ridiculous.
Martinez is a good fighter but he's not a great fighter, and i think him struggling last night is to do with Murray's gameplan rather than all these excuses i've been hearing for Martinez.

After that fight he better watch out for Quillen

I think Martinez has always been quite easy to hit though, he's been floored alot in his career. Down against Williams, Pavlik, Macklin, x2 Murray, Chavez, he also got his nose broke vs Barker, and Margarito back in 2001 didn't have much trouble finding him either.
Martinez is a good guy and a good fighter, but i do think he has been overrated.

I think there all solid but Murray suprised me completely, i remember seeing him go life and death in the prize fighter final. And even though he had a solid performance vs Sturm, there was nothing to suggest he would give Martinez that much trouble.
Im really impressed how much Murray has improved, and how he can stick to a gameplan for 12 rounds.

I don't think he's overrated, but he is past his prime.

Thought Peter looked good lastnight. Hes settled down alot and is more accurate.
I don't think Martinez is overrated or really over the hill. Murray was a plesant suprise and dude can fight and kept his head and stuck to a plan. Solid body shots too. Barker had a turtle shell going and Martinez broke him down nicely. Hes nearing 40 and is not a traditional 'boxer' 101 so its natural to see some wear and tear. Hes a showman and has a chip on his shoulder, his swagger gets the better of his brain in spots, you fight solid fighters you have to work for it.
Re: Sergio Martinez Past His Prime ?
This thread is full of contradictions.
Martinez is 38, full of injuries and fighting above his optimum weight-class. He gets hit with shots from slower, arguably lesser, fighters than he did back in the day. He is clearly past his prime.
Re: Sergio Martinez Past His Prime ?
He beat Barker. He beat Macklin. He then tore a bunch of ligaments. He figured since Murray was thought of as having no power and the lesser of the previous two that he would essentially have a walk in the park after rehab.
Re: Sergio Martinez Past His Prime ?
Sergio has come back from a serious injury, I think he will be in better condition next time. Age is nothing but a number and it is all in the mind. Ask Hopkins.

You certainly don't know shit about boxing.
Re: Sergio Martinez Past His Prime ?
Martinez is kinda meh to me hes good figher but i would not put great and him in the same room. He hand long career but lost his first big fight with Margarito, Lost Paul Willaims but had a hell of a rematch with the knock out and beat Kelly Pavlik who was pretty much never the same after Hopkins. Martinez record at both Jmw and Mw aren't really aw inspiring not even sure i put him in the Hall of Fame but there are fighters that should not be in the hall that are so i don't really know.

Whenever anyone says that they need a slap back into reality. Fact.
