I heard but didn't find confirmation that the character Dalton was based on self-defense author/instructor Marc "Animal" MacYoung and that another self-defense author/instructor, Peyton Quinn, was the technical consultant to the film.
Both authors' books published by Paladin Press.

Iron Monkey (Donnie Zen) is pretty good
The last Ip Man. The legend is born was great
Still love Ninja checkmate, that move is just one fight after another! Ghost-Faced killer!
I didn't like The Legend is Born that much compared to Ip Man 1-2... Guess I wanted to see Donnie Yen. Word is he will make #3 when originally he said he was done with the franchise.
Going to watch The Grandmasters sometime this week. Arthouse director, Wong Kar-wai (known for Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Happy Together, and a few more like Ashes of Time) directs his favorite leading man, Tony Leung Chiu-wai (Hardboiled, Hero, Infernal Affairs, Happy Together, loads more)

Also will watch The Guillotines this week.

Grandmaster looks cool but nothing like Ip Man.
Watched Hero yesterday and just noticed the character Sky is Donnie from Ip Man. :)

In terms of cast, Hero had a powerhouse cast with Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Zhang Ziyi, and Maggie Cheung. "A" level talent all around.
Yeah, on The Grandmasters - I don't expect Tony Leung surpass Donnie Yen in physicalness. But in my book, still worth checking on the strength of Tony's acting (if you didn't see Infernal Affairs 1 - check it out... Scorsese remade it as The Departed - IMO Infernal Affairs was better with the cat and mouse games between the 2 moles) and I liked Wong Kar-wai's earlier movies.

Ipman (the 1st) was definitely the best. 2 wasn't that great imo
I heard Yen was doing a new monkey king movie

Ip Man 2 was good and grown on me, it had more action in it.

the over-the-top fight at the restaurant on top of the table was cool. the boxer at the end of the movie was cool, but essentially #2 was structured the same way as #1. nothing new. don't get me wrong, i loved both movies, but #1 was the one i liked more. if they changed the story structure in #2 and had same fights, i may be saying #2 was best lol
