Lets hope Messi and Mascherano can do something about it on Sunday.

You said in fact football was the only thing they had over you, which clearly has not been the case, the only two times you beat them in the olympics in recent memory are the two most recent games, one of which Britain was the host of which seems to inflate the number of medals won for some reason. Here are the numbers from 1968 of just West Germany, leaving East Germany out.
1968
WGermany 5 gold 26 total
G Britain 5 gold 18 total
1972
WGermany 13 gold 40 total
G Britain 4 gold 18 total
1976
WGermany 10 gold 39 total
G Britain 3 gold 13 total
1980
West Germany did not participate
1984
W German 17 gold 59 total
G Britain 5 gold 37 total
So I think my argument of they consistenly beat ya'll in the olympics holds seeing as even West Germany by themselves always tended to win out, perhaps I should have said usually due to them losing out the last 2, you are right tho that Britain's trend has been up and Germany's down.
The gerries certainly used to give blighty a beating in the olympic medal count but recently that has changed around, I would guess due to the olympics being held in london, when a country hosts an event like this they always pump a lot of money into sports development in the many years leading up to it, so it is no surprise to see blighty beating the gerries in 2008 before the london olympics, these tings are very well planned out and cost a lot :S.... Britain certainly seems to have a very good system right now due to this funding so the rest of europe(bar the russian dopers) are on the back foot for sure and it will be up to them to catch up !....
anway as for the world cup... Lets say messi puts in a performance like maradona did in the 86 final, aka getting totally marked out the game by an intellignet team but still putting up a very good assist that is a big help in winning the world cup... How does this effect the way people see messi? A world cup winner but wasnt the real deciding factor in teh final but certainly had a big hand in it ? all hypothetical questions(I also think the gerries will bash them!)
Agreed, They did used to beat Britain consistantly. But not now.
Britains upward trend comes from the influx of lottery money funding following the disaster of the 1996 games.
The trend will continue for a good few games yet. Then after that who knows.
Anyway, this has sprawled out a bit.
Everything! Live sport beats the crap out of any other TV.
Personally I love Boxing, Football, Rugby, Formula One. And am into Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Cycling as well. Proper sports nerd.
For me a good game of Rugby is one of the best things to watch. It just takes a while to fully understand. Plus a bad game of rugby is one of the worst things to watch!
To be fair though, I think (like a lot of people here) nothing beats a big fight feel when you are really on one side. I guess part of it is because the end can come at any time. Most sports have a prescribed timeframe with a definitive end point, either in terms of time, or number of games won. Boxing has that but with one big provisio - the end can come at any time.
I think if you are into Football and Boxing there is no reason that you wouldn't really enjoy rugby (you may be a rugby fan so excuse my assumption). But a big part of enjoyment is fully understanding, not just the rules, but the context of the game, the characters involved, what is at stake, what is expected and what is unexpected.
That's what we all get with football in England, whether we seek it out or not.
I do watch the odd game of rugby union, I watch the world cup usually when its on, England games mainly
I struggle with rugby league tho, I have tried, which might be a bad thing to say being an northern lad and my home town having a team in the super league, but I just don't find it entertaining
when I was a student I watched a reasonable amount of cricket, I remember staying up several nights on the run for an England New Zealand test.
and if athletics is on and im sat there ill watch it
I don't watch anything on tv other than sport (and the odd film)
but nothing even comes close to the buzz I get from watching football and boxing
Anyway.... lets get back to the world cup and watching the biggest match in history Brazil v Holland for 3rd and 4th place.
I like the 3rd place play off :S.. Hopefully the teams have a bit of fun and play many of the guys who missed out on getting game time and go on the attack, not so many goals in the knockout rounds(bar brazils beatdown) so hopefully brazil go out to make it up to the fans a bit and score a few !...
Obviously it doesn't matter who wins but it is nice sideshow before the real game
They still show casualty :S..........
I am hoping brazil win today!
I was also hopping there'd be more of the squad players starting today... fred is out luckily but replaced with Jo.. sometimes the brazillians seem to be obsessed with starting these very average poachers who dont even have a great goal scoring record at club level....
thiago silva must be off for that... bad decision ref... that was a clear red card
weird performance from brazil... they actually looked pretty good after the two goals and had some good chances to score..... David luiz has cost them this tournament though... so many of these goals were scored where he was way up the pitch for no apparent reason(he's been like a poor mans lucio).. I think big phil buggered it up this time, the full backs would push up so high and when countered would just meander back, so the dodgy moustached gustavoe fellow would have to fill in at full back and that would leave very little cover in the midfield area leaving the centre backs totally exposed(and when luiz was so far up, that reallymeans thiago silva :S)... just dire tactics from brazil.. The players are not this bad and a lot of the blame has to fall on big phil in my opinion..
Oscar was a bright spot for brazil though, he has been pretty good and he could have had a penalty v the dutch... problem was it looked like he was already going over when he was fouled .. So i dont know if that is really a penalty... but i think i would have given it
I'm a Brazil fan and this is going to sound weird... but the last two losses were probably the best thing (long term) that could've happened to Brazil. They were clearly not the best team in the WC, but were acting like the trophy was theirs already. They thought the emotion of "let's win one for Neymar" and the local crowd cheering wildly for them.... was enough to carry them to the title. They forgot that you have win it on the field. Against Germany they looked like shit. I would have to assume they'll use this disaster in a positive way.... and retool completely in preparation for the next Cup. Motivation is good no matter what the method.
I am excited it is about to start.
Germany winners of the world cup 2014.
Germany deserved it. They were the best team in the Cup.
Congratulations to Germany for winning the 2014 World Cup Final and the hero of the team Mario Gotze.

Germany were the better team througout so deserved the win. On the night though Argentina will kick themselves for not taking their chances, 3 or 4 golden opportunities that weren't taken. Messi and Higuain should have scored, Higuain twice.
I kinda wanted Argentina to win it and for Messi to play a staring role but it wasnt to be. He looked good in fits but didnt really put a stamp on the game. I think its a bit unfair on the likes of Messi, Ronaldo to be putting a black mark against their names because they havent won a world cup, or been able to single handedly drag a team to winning it.
Name your best 11 players in each position for this tournament.
tournaments best 11 :S hard for me to say as I didnt closely watch all the games :S and errr I drink a fair amount of beer too so i'm really not sure about some of my choices..
The ones I would certainly have in the team are neuer, mascherano, james rodriguez, messi and robben... will think of the rest later on
David Luiz and Marcelo have to be right up there, surely ;D
Seriously though, I though both Dutch wing-backs (Blind/ Kuyt) were solid through out the tournament. Hard for a wing-back to feature in a game but they were both incredibly consistent, reliable.
Neymar would have been what we wanted Messi to be if he had at least a 50% reliable defence behind him. Also, I think Brazil should forget strikers. France won without one. Use the false no.9 trick.
Off topic but my favourite formation is now, without a doubt, 3-4-3. The Dutch and The Chilien teams were excellent with it.
Anyone see this? Apparently North Korea's state-controlled media were telling it's residents that not only was North Korea competing in the world cup... they were doing quite well and made it to the finals! Oi vey...

Neuer
Hummels - Vlaar - Garray
Kuyt - Schweinsteiger - Mascherano - Blind
Robben - Muller - Neymar
Obviously RodrÃguez and Messi are missing but I like the overall productivity of the above, With Neymar and Robben playing as inverted wingers and Muller interchanging with Neymar on the fly.
Navos (costa rica)
Lahm
Vlaar (Holland)
Silva
Rojo (Argenitina)
Pogba (France)
Mascherano
Kroos
Rodgriguez (Colombia
Robben
Muller
I have to dispute picking Dirk Kuyt as one of the top wing backs, he was so frustrating to watch. He is completely right footed, can't even play simple passes with his left, and they played him left wing back. The defenders didn't even bother covering the line, as they knew he would cut in to his right every time. Blind was tidy though.
..............neuer
lahm....devrij.... boateng....blind
..........kroos.. mascherano.
rodriguez....messi......robben
