I'm pretty sure the germans consistenly beat yall in the medal count in the olympics...
    Erm,

    London 2012-
    Britain 29 Golds 65 Medals
    Germany 11 Golds 44 Medals

    Beijing 2008 -
    Britain 19 Golds 47 medals
    Germany 16 Golds 41 Medals

    All time -
    Britain 236 golds, 780 Medals
    Germany 174 Golds 573 Medals
if you look you pretty much picked the only two olympics in recent memory where Britain won more medals, usually it is not even close

here are the results since reunification
    92 germany 32 golds total 82
    Britain 5 golds total 20

    96 germany 20 golds total 65
    Britain 1 gold total 15

    2000 germany 13 golds total 56
    Britain 11 golds total 28

    2004 germany 13 golds total 49
    Britain 9 golds total 30

don't know where you got that 174# for germany since just the ones up there listed is like 100+ medals for germany, then you throw in the time they were east/west germany...yeah don't think its even close.

To add I went back to 1988 if you combine east and west germany they have 48 golds just at those games and a total of 142, Britain had 5 golds and 24 total. You were saying?

Well I didn't pick two random games, I took the two most RECENT...

I wasn't saying Britain has always had the upper hand, but lately we have. And that won't change any time soon. Their trend is very much downwards and ours is very much upwards.
We were utter shit in the 80s/90s but have consistently got better and better.
Only US and China above us at 2012, and 4th in 2008.

Also, not that this is my point, but you can't count East and West Germany together.
That's two teams. And given you only have a finite number of entries per event for each team it's a bit of an advantage having two teams.

In summary, in terms of the Olympics, Germany used to be better, now Britain is.

The fucking Germans are going to win this.

German medal numbers are vastly inflated by the East German athletic programme which systematically doped all their athletes with everything known to man. The East German womens athletic team all looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger's big brother.

Lets hope Messi and Mascherano can do something about it on Sunday.

You said in fact football was the only thing they had over you, which clearly has not been the case, the only two times you beat them in the olympics in recent memory are the two most recent games, one of which Britain was the host of which seems to inflate the number of medals won for some reason. Here are the numbers from 1968 of just West Germany, leaving East Germany out.

    1968
    WGermany 5 gold 26 total
    G Britain 5 gold 18 total

    1972
    WGermany 13 gold 40 total
    G Britain 4 gold 18 total

    1976
    WGermany 10 gold 39 total
    G Britain 3 gold 13 total

    1980
    West Germany did not participate

    1984
    W German 17 gold 59 total
    G Britain 5 gold 37 total

So I think my argument of they consistenly beat ya'll in the olympics holds seeing as even West Germany by themselves always tended to win out, perhaps I should have said usually due to them losing out the last 2, you are right tho that Britain's trend has been up and Germany's down.

The gerries certainly used to give blighty a beating in the olympic medal count but recently that has changed around, I would guess due to the olympics being held in london, when a country hosts an event like this they always pump a lot of money into sports development in the many years leading up to it, so it is no surprise to see blighty beating the gerries in 2008 before the london olympics, these tings are very well planned out and cost a lot :S.... Britain certainly seems to have a very good system right now due to this funding so the rest of europe(bar the russian dopers) are on the back foot for sure and it will be up to them to catch up !....

anway as for the world cup... Lets say messi puts in a performance like maradona did in the 86 final, aka getting totally marked out the game by an intellignet team but still putting up a very good assist that is a big help in winning the world cup... How does this effect the way people see messi? A world cup winner but wasnt the real deciding factor in teh final but certainly had a big hand in it ? all hypothetical questions(I also think the gerries will bash them!)

Agreed, They did used to beat Britain consistantly. But not now.
Britains upward trend comes from the influx of lottery money funding following the disaster of the 1996 games.
The trend will continue for a good few games yet. Then after that who knows.

Anyway, this has sprawled out a bit.

Everything! Live sport beats the crap out of any other TV.

Personally I love Boxing, Football, Rugby, Formula One. And am into Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Cycling as well. Proper sports nerd.
For me a good game of Rugby is one of the best things to watch. It just takes a while to fully understand. Plus a bad game of rugby is one of the worst things to watch!
To be fair though, I think (like a lot of people here) nothing beats a big fight feel when you are really on one side. I guess part of it is because the end can come at any time. Most sports have a prescribed timeframe with a definitive end point, either in terms of time, or number of games won. Boxing has that but with one big provisio - the end can come at any time.

I think if you are into Football and Boxing there is no reason that you wouldn't really enjoy rugby (you may be a rugby fan so excuse my assumption). But a big part of enjoyment is fully understanding, not just the rules, but the context of the game, the characters involved, what is at stake, what is expected and what is unexpected.
That's what we all get with football in England, whether we seek it out or not.

I do watch the odd game of rugby union, I watch the world cup usually when its on, England games mainly

I struggle with rugby league tho, I have tried, which might be a bad thing to say being an northern lad and my home town having a team in the super league, but I just don't find it entertaining

when I was a student I watched a reasonable amount of cricket, I remember staying up several nights on the run for an England New Zealand test.

and if athletics is on and im sat there ill watch it

I don't watch anything on tv other than sport (and the odd film)

but nothing even comes close to the buzz I get from watching football and boxing

but nothing even comes close to the buzz I get from watching football and boxing

Yeah I'm the same with Rugby League. Too repetitive.

No that's fair enough then, you obviously give other sports a go, and you like best what you like best. I'm just glad I get right into quite a few sports, gives some meaning to my life!

Being as its the second most watched sporting event in the world I'd say quite a few.

You into any sports other than football or boxing?

Plenty of good sports out there, why limit yourself.

    alright alright

what do you suggest I watch?
