He may be relevant to a lot of young people and the black community him but he's not what you would call a house hold name.
Like you said Murphy and Pryor were big draws because they could connect with a wide audience on all sorts of levels... not because they told funny race jokes. I never said that they got big because the told a lot of race jokes.
That doesn't change the fact that they can get away with saying things that somebody like Robin Williams etc couldn't.
The proof is right there, race dominates a lot of black comedy, why doesn't it with white? Murphy etc will talk about race (black and white) because it's funny and he won't get chastised for it. Can you think of a reason why top white comedians don't, if they have the potential to say something funny about a subject that a lot of people are going to get then they're not just going to leave it out of their material.
That's all very true, but ask yourself this, how many big name comedians of ANY race have emerged the past 10 years? Not many. You know why? Because comedy is alot like the dunk contest, everything has already been done. If I asked you, or anyone to name their top 10 comics of all time, at least 9 would be from 15 years ago or earlier. All race jokes have been done, and the only way to make them funny is to tell them in a new observant light, which few can do. And let's not forget, Robin Williams didn't harp on race because he didn't have to, just as Bill Cosby didn't have to harp on race. He dealt with family issues that all could relate to, another reason the Cosby Show was as successful as it was. And lastly, Chris Rock is not as iconic as Pryor or Murphy, but to say he's not a household name is way off. You don't get asked to host the Oscars if your not a household name.
ps-as I stated before, white comedians will joke about race if they have something funny to say about it, a good comedian knows nothing is off limits, so if they refuse to put something in their act for fear of offending someone they're a p@ssy, and I don't think their are too many top white comics who are afraid of anything.
Re: Does Chris Rock tell non-race related jokes??
Except people not going to their shows.
You piss off a small minority group... disabled, elderly etc then you'll get minor out cry but it's not like it's going to put a lot of people off buying your tickets/dvds.
Piss of a race and you're going to take a hit from it.

That maybe true, but the fact is the majority of white comedians who do race jokes generally work most on the 'black' comedy circuit. By and large its not black audiences who get offended & say I won't see any of their shows again, some of the most successful young comedians in the UK do a load of race jokes. Also just one example of an successful white comedian who does race jokes - Sarah Silverman. Oh but that must be because she's a woman right
Unless the stuff is actually malicious as it was in the Michael Richards case, then its very unlikely it would hurt their career. Comedy operates a system by which as long as you aren't trying to hurt someone, pretty much EVERYTHING goes.

For the second time, can you please give me an example of a white comedian who's career 'took a hit' from doing black jokes? Thank you;)

mate i own every single chubby brown, bernard manning dvd there is to own and they are just about the 2 sickest comedians out there who go out of their way to offend everyone......and i love the fat fuckers for it.
But if chris rock is allowed to make a racial slur or connatation about white people on a regular and consistent basis that gets aired on prime time tv to women, men and children alike then how the hell can someone complain when the guy from seinfield gets a little bit too carried away at a live show??
thats just double standards!!!
So you like comedians when they are being racists towards black people but you feel the need to complain on a boxing forum when a black man makes a joke about a white man?
You've said it yourself......thats just double standards!!!

No because you can't tell me one who has.

They're generally Jew jokes... because she's Jewish she can get away with it and I'd hardly call her a comedian but that's another story.
Take for example Goodness Gracious me, Indian made program... if it was white people joking about those stereotypes then their would be an outcry.
Really the only 'white' comedy I have seen that even attempts to joke about black stereotypes is family guy. Can't think of anything else.
Re: Does Chris Rock tell non-race related jokes??
South Park has dabbled a bit...it's funnier than anything Seth Macfarlane has ever done

Dude, I already gave you three, try to keep up here:rolleyes:
Re: Does Chris Rock tell non-race related jokes??
You didn't tell me any... I've just had to back track through the whole entire thread to find you listing people back before I'd even started posting in it. I replied to the first post and went from my reply.
Not heard those guys doing it but I'll take your word for it. It's still true that it is prominent in almost all black stand up whilst I've heard little to none of it from other comedians but if these guys do do it as much as black comedians do to as big an audience then I guess there is no double standard.
Still don't know why it's such dominent topic in black stand up but maybe you could shed some light on that also? ;)
I'm getting the feeling you know a few more comedians than I do... :p
edit: Oh and for the record I hope I don't come off as being bothered about race jokes - they're funny. these are just the conclusions I've came to as to why it is so much more common in black comedy

My bad, didn't know you didn't see my first post. You are correct, racial topics are more prevalent among black comics, but I'm merely stating that in stand up comedy, there are no double standards. In society, there are DEFINATELY the double standards you speak of, but all barriers come down in stand up because true stand up (most notably from the greats like Carlin and Pryor) is considered art and nothing is off limits or out of bounds. But again, back to your first observation, you're right, racial topics are more common in black comedy, it's just that no comedian, regardless of race, will face any real backlash for it.
Re: Does Chris Rock tell non-race related jokes??
No mate, my bad... I shouldn't skim read threads ;)
Would of cut to the chase if I'd read that in the first place wouldn't it? :p
