Murphy and Pryor both have much more than race jokes... that's why they are basically legends... Chris Rock hasn't done too bad but isn't on eithers level if we're honest.
He may be relevant to a lot of young people and the black community him but he's not what you would call a house hold name. If I told my dad Murphy was doing acts again he'd probably get a ticket... if I said Chris Rock was in town he'd ask who the fuck he was.
Like you said Murphy and Pryor were big draws because they could connect with a wide audience on all sorts of levels... not because they told funny race jokes. I never said that they got big because the told a lot of race jokes.
That doesn't change the fact that they can get away with saying things that somebody like Robin Williams etc couldn't.
The proof is right there, race dominates a lot of black comedy, why doesn't it with white? Murphy etc will talk about race (black and white) because it's funny and he won't get chastised for it. Can you think of a reason why top white comedians don't, if they have the potential to say something funny about a subject that a lot of people are going to get then they're not just going to leave it out of their material.
