When I bring up Pacquiao to the average Joe I hang out with the ask 3 or 4 times how to pronounce it and then ask if he's any good. I am sure in the Phillipines and anyone worldwide that follows boxing even casually or occasionally would know him, I haven't met that many people that know who he is. Where I live though boxing is not very popular anymore.
I do however find it funny that someone would write an article that says basically "PAC is popular" not exactly investigative journalism, kinda one of those things that goes without saying if it's true.
A-Rod is only commonly spoken in my area when it comes to beastiality and Jeter man love;D

Search google for Muhammad Ali 108,000 results
Mike Tyson
3,390,000
I not saying he should be or thats this is based on boxing abliity, just that his name transcends boxing, not for the best reasons but no one comes near him
I get 3,870,000 hits on google on Muhammad Ali. Just saying.

Ali - 3,770,000
Tyson - 3,450,000
Ali was the first ever name I recall hearing about boxing. And also as I heard other names, like Tyson and other widely known names...Ali's name almost always seemed to come up as a point of reference.
"What do you think of Delahoya?"
"He's fast and all, but if he was in the ring with Ali..."
or
"Tyson is a beast!"
"Yea, but if he fought in Al's time, Ali would kick his..."
Always seemed to be like that as I remember it,in passing.

Muhamad Ali is the biggest, the greatest,.. I mean he is the big Kahuna in boxing.
I am not refering to popularity I am talking about and I think this thread is about the most recognised name in boxing, by both boxing fans and non boxing fans alike
Stop random people in the street and more will have heard of Mike than Ali
Ali is the big Kahuna:) to boxing fans but Tyson is the biggest name
What's the big diff between
biggest name and
popular name?
...not much really.
Popular names usually last a short amount of time...
EG- Naseem Hamed was a name that everyone was talking about in the early 2000's and late 90's.....
Alexis Arguello is a name that people still talk about on a regular basis...
Making him a bigger name

I'm not a fan of baseball, but I am definately aware of the rivalry you guys have up there. While you may speak ill of A-rod, you still speak of him though. $28,000,000 a year is more than me and all 500 of my cousins make combined!!

More controversy surounded Ali then any other boxer... Some others prior to him like Jack Johnson would have but the media wasn't as huge as it is now...
Tyson was a good heavy and a phenom but not even close to Ali. Most of those articles are due to Tysons histrionics outside the ring...
Ali is as recognizeable as Tyson. Ali will forever be thought of as the better fighter, which makes him more popular...
End of story.
Hope that helps:cool:

At 1 time a study was done and outside of the pope (At the Time it was the late John Paul) who is recognized by just about anyone no matter what religion Muhammad Ali was the most recognized man on the planet...Not just by boxing fans but period.....That exceeds not only the popularity this guy claims Pacquiao has (and again nothing against the popularity of Pacquiao) but any other sporting figure ever....
Here is a link to an article that AskMen Magazine wrote some years back...Mind you this is not athletes but People period
Ali is #4 of all time most known faces in this article...Just under the late Pope Queen Elizabeth and Michael Jackson...(who at the time was all over the charts and not a known perv)
