    Default The Power Of Pacquiao

When it comes to star power, no fighter can compete with Manny Pacquiao. Every single thing that this guy does makes news, and quite a bit that he doesn’t do as well. He’s good copy in any language.

I can’t think of a single athlete in any sport that can command the type of attention that Pacquiao receives world wide, not in team sports, not golf, not tennis, and not boxing. David Beckham probably comes closest.

For example, pound for pound best Floyd Mayweather Jr., with the help of a great publicity machine has participated in “Dancing with the Stars,” “Wrestlemania XXIV,” and will wave the green flag at the Indy 500. He’s also had his share of negative press for “making it rain” in strip clubs, his family squabbles, and his occasional outrageous statements in hyping a fight. But even Floyd is not in Manny’s league as an international star.

Much has been made about Pacquiao’s superstar status in the Philippines, where he is treated as a god, but it doesn’t just end there in the Pacific. The boxing sites all know it. A story about Pacquiao missing a plane will draw more readers than a heavyweight title bout. Mayweather’s stories don’t even come close.

If Floyd has some negative press about him,.. and so does Manny.

He can write what he likes, he is still spouting nonsense if he thinks Manny is the worlds most famous sports star.

Unlike Beckham, Ive yet to see Manny on national news in England or Japan (Where I live now). Never seen him on a talk show, never seen him advertising any Multinational brands, never seen his photo splattered all over department stores and fashion shops.

This isnt to suggest that I dont like Manny or that he isnt popular, the author is simply getting carried away.

Probably... Michael Swann (the author) is a Pacquiao nuthugger?

Regarding major multinational brand advertisement, Pacquiao has a Nike commercial with Kobe Bryant, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, and Xiang Liu.

That's a very good company of several sports superstars. Xiang Liu is the only one I'm not familiar with...

    Here's that Nike commercial:

It also attributes to the type of life he lives.

Mayweather is trying to become a mainstream name by doing the things he's been doing. Cotto could be just as big, but he only becomes news when he's about to fight because he probably lives a normal life. Hatton is the same way. HUGE in England, but the most excitement out of boxing you get out of him is his liking to beer and food. I could name more fighters but all-in-all everyone leads pretty normal lives outside the ring.

Pacquiao on the other hand does movies, goes clubbing, makes music, delays training and appearances, supposedly cheats on his wife, etc. There's a lot of room for error with his lifstyle considering he's a boxer. Look at Tyson! He lived a crazy life outside of boxing and that's why he was always on the spotlight.

It's basically just easy to write stuff about Manny because there's so much excitement with him in the ring AND outside of it.

I still say Oscar has larger star power, simply because of numbers... there are so many latino americans that follow him that it probably is a greater number than there are phillipinos in the world.

I like Manny and he is a big name in the sporting world but not quite that big...

    1. ODLH is the biggest name in boxing hands down
If we are talking general public and boxing fans combined the biggest and most recognised name in boxing is hands down is Mike Tyson

and will be for many years

My gran knows who Mike Tyson is, sky could PPV him having a shit and it would outsell most fights

This kind of thread is a natural magnet for that kind of response. I'll give a medal of courage to Saddoboxer for starting this nice mess.
Once in awhile, get outside in fresh air, take a deep breath & with a deep sigh, let out all the things that's bottled up inside you & be free, & you'll get a glimpse of nirvana.

I had no idea who Pacquiao was until I joined this board. Zero.

But I also wasn't much of a fan of the stars of the sport, and more of a fan of the game. Since tho, I have been utubing people when I see them mentioned a lot, and Manny I instantly came to like high on my new list of pro boxers to watch.

He's fast, exciting, hits hard and has charisma.

    just a n00bs humble opinion.

WTF? He's been the Ring #2 p4p fighter for 2 years now. Do you even know Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Juan Manuel Marquez? If you missed their big rivalries then that's too bad.

uhh, dude. I am 13 years old. Been spending my boxing time in a gym working out, fighting, learning the sport from that point of view. This is all new to me. And no, I didn't know who any of those people were either, but I am learning about them.

The only boxers I really knew were people like Ali and those old time legends, ODLH, Sugar Ray, Mayweather, stuff like that.

Just telling it like it is...
