Yeah but it's pretty fucking sad that just because you may not like a style or a certain fight that you can't respect the fighters or the outcome....it's ridiculous and I would think you as a boxer might have a little understanding that styles might make for bad fights and sparring partners who may know what is coming might be difficult to fight in a real fight because they have real experience against the fighter in question.

They were criticizing Wlad and for good reason. He wasn't impressive tonight, that's an opinion, expert or not. You spent two paragraphs talking about some of the most impressive guys in boxing and compared it to people's comparision's Wlad. Just not right, and Scrap gave valid criticisms. What does Thompson being a southpaw have to do with him coming straight ahead and not throwing anything in the middle rounds? Nothing.

Sure he made mistakes but there are rarely PERFECT FIGHTS...Wlad is a good fighter and a good champion he can eventually become great seeing how he's 32 and 51(45 KO)-3...that's a win better than Tyson's whole career!

The thing is, people are allowed to criticize. So Lyle get your panties out of a bunch.

A lot of people, when they see Wlad, they see a very flawed champion. Let's be honest, he's pretty much one dimensional. Sloppy, and one dimensional and even his most ardent fans should be able to admit that. No one is saying he doesn't have good power, a great jab and outside game, so for you to keep saying that is pointless. Everyone knows it.

No one out there is disputing that he's the champion right now either, that's not a criticism of his. No one is saying that Ruslan Chagaev is the real heavyweight champion, so to keep bringing that up is pointless too. It's something everyone knows.

But the fact that he is a champion is what gets people so frustrated. He's obviously limited. He literally has no inside game and only gets by on the inside because for whatever reason, he is impervious to being warned for holding. Of course Wladimir can't use his height to his advantage inside, but that doesn't mean he should be allowed to break the rules just because it is more difficult for him to fight cleanly within distance then others. And it's not just when other fighters come in on him, several times he got wild with the right hand versus Thompson and covered up immediately after a la Hopkins. He did that more then I've ever seen.

Anyways, all this frustration isn't neccessarily directed at Wlad. Like I said, he's head and shoulders above the rest of the crop at heavyweight. It's more directed towards the division in general, and how sorry of a state it really is. Really, there aren't enough harsh words to describe the division right now. Some divisions are thin at the top but filled with solid talent, others are heavy at the top but really aren't deep at all, but the heavyweight division is just all around bad. Really, it's a pathetic division with no signs of getting any better. They see Wlad, people see wholes in his game yet he's a kingpin with no real challenges since Peter. There's something wrong there.

Part of me wants to think Povetkin can do something, make some noise but I really doubt it but the division would be far better off if he did.

But even as an amateur i can see the huge mistakes being made by Wladmir and Thompson and it's atrocious! I mean has Thompson still honestly not learnt to slip a punch? There's a difference between expressing a well articulated opinion and calling two heavyweight fighters a couple of "faggots". Didn't like the fight, don't like Klitchsko? Thats fine, but try to be a little bit respectful about it.

Klitchko wins.....dissappointment is understandable, but the guy is doing his job, as much of the blame has to be put on these opponets as well. The tiger had no buisness in the ring with klitchko, he wasn't exceptionally good in really any area, he threw bombs at the body that i thought would eventually get to klitscho but he just brushed them off. As long as he continues to beat the people set in front of him that's all he required to do. Do people want to see someone's head blow up everyfight maybe so, but there's a sport for those people now (mma etc), I don't have a problem with him at all, he's not threatned in the ring against these guys, sure he could do more and be more dramatic but winning is the ultimate goal in this sport and he's making a pretty decent career doing so......i did ask myself a couple of times watching this fight how haye would fare, hard to tell though cause i think he fights these chumps at one level and would have no choice but to look good against haye. Klitchko is going for the rounds these days...not the Ko. Nothing wrong with that imo......

I don't have a problem with what Piye said, but how he said it certainly lacks political correctness. If you read the post, however, there is some valid analysis of Wlad's style that certainly annoys many fans. Wlad holds so much that his fights are sometimes frustrating to watch.

I actually missed the fight (yeah... I keep watching heavyweights in hopes a good fight breaks out one day), but I've read through this thread and I doubt the fight itself had better exchanges.

Again I agree we have to respect wlad. He is not the best heavy champ i've ever seen by a long stretch but until someone ignites the heavy division (hopefully Haye) he is the best out there and has proven it and however dire the division is imagine what it would be like if we did not have someone who we could without much doubt say "he's the man to beat". Another thing I like about Wlad is he is reasonibly active I mean he will probably have 3 defences in 2008 how often in recent years have we seen that?

After a slow first round, Klitschko began to connect with his right hand in round two, a round in which both fighters were cut by a headbutt. Klitschko continued to headhunt while Thompson started having good results to the body in the fourth. By round seven, Klitschko seemed to be breaking down Thompson, who was once Wlad's sparring partner and seemed to be reverting to that mode as the fight went on. Thompson got up gingerly after both fighters got tangled up and went down to the canvas in the tenth. An animated Klitschko finally dropped Thompson for the count in the eleventh with a spectacular right hand. Time was 1:22. Next up for Klitschko will be a defense against Alexander Povetkin later this year.

That, whether you like it or not is the kind of thing that will be written in history books. It doesn't say anything really about how poor a fight it was or how gay they are or anything like that, it just picks up on the important facts that Wlad won the fight in the 11th round by knockout.

I thought Wlad looked terriblt and Thompson much worse.

I wouldn't say it was a good fight. Certainly better than the Sultan one though. I was extremely impressed with Thompsons chin. He took some big straight right hands off Wlad but remained quite competitive throughout until the 10th round. I then started feeling well a bit sorry for him and I think he should have been pulled out by his corner as he was clearly in a lot of pain and was never going to win the fight, to me he was looking round for someone to pull him out without him quitting himself after they fell over on the ropes.
As for the homosexual comments! I'd love to see him say it to either mans face then see his face smashed straight in. At the end of the day it was a dull fight because of the contrasting styles of the two fighters and the fact that it was a lefty v righty. A southpaw will quite often make a superior Orthodox fighter look bad as they get a lot more practice against orthodox fighters than the other way around.

Wlad ko'd a fighter that has never been ko'd I don't think Thompson has ever been knocked down. Thompson will be a problem for all the heavies and from what I've seen few will get past him.

So you have fought some amateur fights and you think you can personally do better? It's not surprising for a boxer to have such a gross amount of arrogance. In your post you don't give any respect to a guy apparently very few fighters can test much less beat...and Tony Thompson deserves respect for making it to the 11th round period, everyone thought it was going to be an early KO. As for never fighting a southpaw, it's very different I've sparred with a couple of them and it does pose problems for throwing the jab and just finding your openings in general.

Thompson is 6'5....I doubt he's had much of an opportunity to SLIP punches as you don't want to give up your height and reach. Winky Wright one of the best defensive fighters of the modern era rarely SLIPS punches.


Wlad fought scared? No Wlad fought at a measured pace and why fight at a measured pace? Because he beat the crap out of Purrity and Brewster and they weathered the storm and were able to turn the tables. Wlad took more punishment from Thompson than has recently been the case. Wlad has 45 KO's out of 51 fights not only because of his power but because he fights smart...he can tire someone out and make them want to not get up before he ever puts them down and that is EXACTLY what happened to Thompson.


You don't like Wlad fine join the club, you don't like Thompson fine, but if you're going to disrespect fighters the way you started the thread out then you're not going to recieve glowing reviews for your comments. So I suggest you tone down the name calling of the fighters and just focus on the actual fight that went on which even I might agree with you on....should Wlad have gone to the body more? YES. Should Thompson have thrown more punches? YES. Does Wlad tie up a lot? Yes, but it's part of his fight strategy and it might make for an ugly fight but it's worked for him extremely well.

Wlad isn't a perfect fighter but he's a good heavyweight and by the end of his career he may be a great champion....like it or not

Wlad will be remembered as a china-chinned boring bottlejob.

Wlad is the best out there...and by the end of his career he's going to be mentioned with some big names....maybe even Lennox Lewis

As for never fighting a southpaw, it's very different I've sparred with a couple of them and it does pose problems for throwing the jab and just finding your openings in general.

Thompson is 6'5....I doubt he's had much of an opportunity to SLIP punches as you don't want to give up your height and reach. Winky Wright one of the best defensive fighters of the modern era rarely SLIPS punches.


Wlad fought scared? No Wlad fought at a measured pace and why fight at a measured pace? Because he beat the crap out of Purrity and Brewster and they weathered the storm and were able to turn the tables. Wlad took more punishment from Thompson than has recently been the case. Wlad has 45 KO's out of 51 fights not only because of his power but because he fights smart...he can tire someone out and make them want to not get up before he ever puts them down and that is EXACTLY what happened to Thompson.


You don't like Wlad fine join the club, you don't like Thompson fine, but if you're going to disrespect fighters the way you started the thread out then you're not going to recieve glowing reviews for your comments. So I suggest you tone down the name calling of the fighters and just focus on the actual fight that went on which even I might agree with you on....should Wlad have gone to the body more? YES. Should Thompson have thrown more punches? YES. Does Wlad tie up a lot? Yes, but it's part of his fight strategy and it might make for an ugly fight but it's worked for him extremely well.

Wlad isn't a perfect fighter but he's a good heavyweight and by the end of his career he may be a great champion....like it or not

And what GREAT fighters have I given no respect to? Floyd? Toney? Ali? Yeah I've dissed those guys a couple times but all while saying they are/were extremely talented and still considered great fighters.....sorry it's not the same as calling them faggots

There seriously is no pleasing some people. I guess because they didn't stand in the center of the ring and bash each other's faces in that made it boring. Despite there being good back and forth action, Klitschko not having an opponent who just rolled over it just wasn't good enough because why, exactly? It ended with a KO no less and that STILL isn't enough for you? Do you look for things to complain about in EVERYTHING?

I watched the fight again as it showed up on TSN, our nations sports channel several times since.

I didn't enjoy the fight. Wish I did, was hoping to, but simply didn't.

Maybe I have just grown accustomed to watching lighter weights fight? Not really sure.

As mentioned in here, some things that I did notice that helped me not enjoy the fight, was the lack of mobility and angles. Wlad used his jab to keep that distance, but it was just that and little more, and I didn't think Thompson did much to get inside of it which he needed to. Wlad I was hoping would be forced to be more creative fighting a lefty, but I didn't see it. He did use his right a bit more I suppose. I don't buy the arguement that Thompson did well because he absorbed shots. Heavy bags absorb shots too, but don't lay down in the 10th and ask for their pay cheque. He did this after turning into a former sparring partner for 3 or so round before. The man clearly was not fighting to win. Wlad was fighting to win, and did...but it was was it was. Bit of a snoozefest.

I'm not sure but when did it become acceptable that heavyweights don't have to move laterally or otherwise and use the ring because they are big?

Just to pile on a little more, fighting Alexander Povetkin won't do much to establish Wlad as THE guy. He should beat Povetkin after Alexander gassed out against Eddie Chambers. I say bring on Valuev. Circus freak though he may be, we want to see how touch he is and if Wlad can knock him out we should give him more respect after that. Despite the name-calling Valuev is a legit threat to any fighter in the division.

I hear "doing his job" all the time... I love a boxer as much as a brawler... I think myself a purist for the most part but the whole point of a sport is for entertainment. Is Wlad dominant, yes... But being the king of bums still makes you a bum...

I think Wladimir scrambled Sam Peter's brain. I haven't understood a word he has said since the fight.

Seriously, during the Klitschko fight Peter looked like he could take a spiked bat to the face and stay on his feet. Since then he has been knocked down by an unconvincing Jameel McCline and staggered by the inferior Maskaev.

If they fight again I think Wlad KO's Peter.

He isn't a good fighter. He's the least worst heavyweight in a garbage division. If he'd been born 20 years earlier nobody would ever have heard of him.
