For those saying, 'he should fight Abraham!".. well, you're ignoring reality. That fight isn't happening until 2009. Pavlik could take the easy route and fight in the fall against a Lockett-esque stiff. If he's willing instead to risk it in the fall against a cagey accomplished fighter like Hopkins while waiting for Abraham, then more power to him.
So in the meantime he cant go up to 168? there are plenty of decent guys, I mean all joking aside I rather see him fight Carl Froch just because the fight will have some explosive quality to it, but not a old boring, hit and old throwing 5 punches around and 2 are legal type fight... No thank you I rather watch him fight a LIVE opponent not a slipping 45 year old fighter
Bernard Hopkins at 55 would probably still be better than Carl Froch is now. If you don't like Bernard's style of fighting, then that's your right, but that doesn't mean Hopkins isn't a worthy opponent for Pavlik.
If you said, "I don't want to see Pavlik fight Hopkins because I don't enjoy Bernard's style" then I wouldn't be disagreeing with that, because that would be a fair opinion. But that's different from "If Pavlik fights Hopkins, I'll lose all respect for him and that fight is garbage."
Again its a crap fight plain and simple... No way Hopkins wins and if he does I'll have his ugly face as an avatar pic for a year.. Whats wrong with pavlik having a fight with a lively opponent:confused:

I do think in the end his pace would be a bit to much and there are other fights I would rather see, like Wright, but he doesn't need to go foray in another division, he's waiting for Abraham at middleweight.
Come on, everyone knew that he wasn't going to have a really big fight this year when Abraham won and said he would honor his mandatory. Hopkins would be a harder fight then anybody Abraham has ever faced too.
And what has Abraham been doing for the past 3 years? Aside from Miranda him and Sturm have literally been defending against the softest competition in boxing. Your boy Berto won a WBC title over a nobody, but you are going to single out Pavlik? There is something else there, you must just not like Pavlik because that's ridiculous.

I suppose I'm thinking out loud and asking myself If I believe this one is winnable for Hopkins........absolutly!But he can be very frustrating for his fans and needs to TAKE it,his tomorrows are just about up!
I too think Hopkins has a shot at winning this. But if all goes Pavlik's way, Bernard may be in big trouble. It'll be marketable too, the past of the middleweight division vs the future!

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
You're wrong JT, Hopkins can win. I think he beat Calzaghe as did a lot of people, he even knocked him down. He's a master at neutralizing his opponent's offense and dumbing down a fight to his pace. No doubt he would give Pavlik a very close fight.
You're honestly telling me that Williams has a better shot at Pavlik? Ok you can join Paul Williams as the only 2 people on Earth who actually believe that.

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
Hopkins has the ability and experience to win ANY fight. His style makes it so his opponent can't fight their fight or struggle to do so. The x-factor is whether or not Hopkins can mount enough offense to sway the judges to score him the round. His activity is what hurts him the most when it comes to the scorecards.

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
How the hell is Kelly supposed to get ready to fight. The merry-go-round of opponents is the worst thing that could happen for Pavlik. Doesn't know who to bring in to spare, what tapes to study, etc. Arum is trying hard to land a fight but for some reason its just a whole lotta talk. If i'm Kelly i got to speak up a bit and start calling someone out and that includes calling out Arum. Enough with the nice guy whatever comes attitude, call out who YOU WANT so you can MENTALLY, AND PHYSICALLY be prepared.

I cannot see the Pavlik Abraham fight happening anytime soon. Maybe way far down the road.
Abraham has no name here. Pavlik is not a big name himself. You know both camps will want 10's of millions to accept the fight and no promoter will risk losing that much of his shirt for a superfight between two unknown champions. With Abraham's promoter's and some of their shady work, there is no way pavlik would fight in Germany either.
This fight has a bigger chance of never happening than happening.
Really? I think if Abraham and Pavlik win their respective matches, and if Calzaghe doesn't call Pavlik out after his fight with Jones, Abraham and Pavlik will easily be each other's next fight.
I think each camp will overprice themselves.

I didnt say I thought he have a better shot, what I sais was he make a fight out of it.. Now turn it into a foul fest... out of all those guys I give Winky the best shot at beating him
What about you boy Andre Ward... I rather see Pavlik fight him at 168 than Hopkins

Calzaghe? Calzaghe has nothing to do with Hopkins unique ability to BORE!!!
Hopkins is the GREATEST fighter in history at making fights BORING!!! Pavlik is currently a Grade 1 boxing entertainer. Hopkins WILL make his fight with Pavlik (should it happen) BORINGLY forgettable.
So BORING people will believe his 3 punches per round style WON him the fight. Fact.

I agree with Fenster 10000000000000% this is a low risk fight since if it goes the distance Hopkins will have landed 36 punches total while boring the whole friggin arena... But its Bernard I cant just fade away and let the spot light go Hopkins so we will be treated with this garbage... I would like to see Pavlik in the ring with a fighter that has a pulse for chrisesakes!!

I can only hope Hopkins gets sparked out.... I would rather see him in with a guy that will make a fight out of it... Hopkins wont and all of you know it, you all just being sentimental and tied to the romance of Hopkins of 5 years ago... This fight will be as exciting as a Zaheer Raheem or John Ruiz fight...

I agree with you, JT, there is far more entertaining fights for Pavlik, although I don't see Hopkins as a terrible fight (although totally predictable), simply because Pavlik will be matched with much worse (Gary Lockett jobs (gimmes)) ;)

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
I think if Kelly fights and beats Hopkins, then the fight with Joe will become more lucrative. A win over Hopkins is never easy and it would prove Pavlik is for real.

He fought his mandatory now let him beat some ass. If he was to step up I would rather see him fight Winky or Kessler. Hopkins will finally be retired after the beating that Pavlik would unlease on him. Look if this fight happens at the after fight photos of Hopkins face after the Calzaghe fight and then compare it to what he looks like after he is ran through a meat grinder with Pavlik.

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
As much as i think this is a pretty bad decision for Pavlik, as there are other opponents he could be fighting.. it is almost a PERFECT situaton..
I don't see Bhop beating Pavlik, i see Pavlik KO'ing Bhop, or winning a very large UD..
But the reason why this is perfect, is that Pavlik will destroy Hopkins, and if Calzaghe beats RJJ then there will be so much talk about Pavlik/Calzaghe that it will almost be forced to be made.. Which is all i can hope for..

Great post.. It will totally shut any type of Calzaghe banter up.. Like when he said Pavlik hasn't earned a chance.. well if he beats Hopkins who Calzaghe BARELY beat, while Pavlik is only 26, especially if Pavlik wins by KO, then, man, Calzaghe will almost HAVE to fight Pavlik, or else he'll be under even more criticism than he already has been..

It is funny how Calzaghe fans were commending Joe for fighting Hopkins and saying how great the win was. Now Pavlik lines up the Nard and some of the same ppl criticise him for fighting an old over the hill man.....

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
Pavlik/ Hopkins is an intriguing mtch up. The current middleweight champ against one of best former middleweight champs.
Youth against experience.
Also it seem to set up the winner for a bout with the winner of Calzaghe/ Jones perfectly!
All I want to know is WTF is Wright doing? He should have done everything possible to get the fight with Pavlik!

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
I would still like to see Pavlik Wright,Calzaghe and Abraham some time with in the next two year window.

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
After the wait, it's a very credible opponent for Kelly. I see him taking control of the fight in the middle rounds, maybe forcing a stoppage late on. Hopkins looked tired last time out, and JC wasn't even pushing him THAT hard so after a few awkward rounds it's Pavlik's fight for me.
Little worried about how Hopkins is backpedalling, he's cruised past the 41 deadline, and now he's coming off the seniors tour to fight a young stronger guy, something he said he wouldn't in the run up to the JC fight. Maybe a convincing loss will persuade him to do the right thing and retire with a great career behind him.
-
Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
Very credible!!
You know i thought Joe would walk in there and just be too much but Hopkins ia a machine. He will stop Kelly working, Pavlik will be running at 30% and thats how Hopkins wins.
If i was Pavlik fan i would be thinking this:
Kelly went life and death with Taylor twice, his power did not look great at 166lbs, Hopkins has been reborn at 175 and Hopkins has the same reach and is only 1" shorter.
Lets see Kelly fight a guy that is a natural SMW/LHW see how he handles his shots bouncing off.

I'm not sure they will just bounce off! Pavlik hits freakishly hard at middle and I personally think he is draining himself to make that weight as he seems to look huge for a middle. If 170 is the weight that the fight will happen at, well I personally think that this is somewhere near his natural fighting weight and his punches would be at their most explosive there. That said Hopkins has never really looked in that much trouble in regards to being knocked out and if anyone could take Kellys best shots it could well be Bernard!

Roy should be a easy fight. If he wanted a hard fight he should fight Tarver. Jones has dropped 3 of his last 6. Or dont you think Joe is any good?

Yep Joe is a good SMW but Roy was extremely weight drained for all 3 of the defeats and has become a lot more aclimatised to the division again now and although he is nowhere near the man he was I think he will be too much for Joe. Roy IMO would beat Tarver now with ease.

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
The only way i see pavlik losing is if he can't land his punches. If his punches start to land it's lights out for hopkins. Even calzaghe seemed to have difficulty landing punches. So that says a lot.

Re: Pavlik vs Hopkins seriously being talked about for Oct 18th
This fight aint a lot.
Okay, i know Hopkins is a marquee name still but am i wrong in saying that Pavlik must realise that he's a Marquee name now?
I read some where that Pavlik aint exactly interested in the fight. If so then fight someone else. Who needs Hopkins now anyway?

If you asked the average American who is Bernard Hopkins, or who is Kelly Pavlik, I'm not sure you'd find the same. Im from Canada and some of my friends(who know I'm into boxing) ask me about Hopkins from time to time. Don't really know why, but they know of him, and definetly not Pavlik. I think Hopkins is still a factor for whatever reason, wish he'd just retire to but there's probably noone else out there Pavlik could make near as muchy money fighting soon.

This fight makes sence, Pavlik is after an opponent Hopkins is a name, he is looking to test the waters above 160lbs. And im willing to bet that HBO have struck a deal between Calzaghe and Pavlik already.
Calzaghe all of a sudden states he will fight again at 168 a few days later Pavlik announces he will fight Hopkins at 170?
The only people that have a problem with this bout are Kellys fans, they know this is a tough bout.
