Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
Jones did what he could with what he had left at this point of career. It really is that simple and their is nothing disgraceful about it!!He displayed great heart. To have expected him to reinvent himself and deny his many years is asking the impossible.

Joe Calzaghe was so wide open i can't believe RJJ didn't take those openings, and secondly all of Joe Calzaghes taunting was just ridiculous. It was like watching a clown in the ring, he done it in every round and in every minute of the round.

This may sound like sour grapes but im very disappointed, in both boxers. RJJ didn't even try to win the fight after the 1st round, and Joe Calzaghe's constant taunting dancing whatever you want to call it. Was just ridiculous to watch, this fight was not a good fight for boxing at all a disgrace IMO.
You beat me to making this thread. I'm glad I wasn't the only person utterly sickened by both of their performances in this fight.
I feel like a mug for ever thinking up all of the possible scenario's that could happen in this fight when Roy clearly had the fight mapped out from the day he signed the contract.
JC is also the most unlikable piece of shit in and out of the ring. His arrogance is delusional and I felt nauseous by the shit he pulled in this fight with no response from Jones who seemed to just find it funny that he was getting the piss taken out of him.
I wish he took his legacy more seriously because he could have scalped Calzaghe tonight the way he fought those first 2 rounds...in fact he could have done him in one because Calzaghe was gasping for air when he was knocked down.
I feel so mugged off by this fight...by both Jones and JC. More dissapointed in Jones because I really believed he was hungry for his one last roll of the dice. He just didn't want to know.
I don't care if I get accused of sour grapes but Calzaghe has gone even lower in my estimation and this just proved to me how easy a prime RJ would have had it. RJ deserved to lose tonight though for the lack of respect he had for himself and his legacy. They can both go fuck themselves for making me stay up for this farce.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
Man there is a lot of sour grapes on this thread.
Seriously, what did you expect?
This fight was about dollars from day one.
For Roy, redundancy money - for Joe, one last pay per view extravaganza.

Yes that comment is "Cock" worthy.
Now, without the childish insults, that's a somewhat justifiable position to have. I don't agree, I thought is was an ok fight initially, then I just found it depressing (no, I'm not a Jones fan, but Calzaghe was clearly beating up the shadow of what RJJ once was and his showboating was obnoxious and disrespectful).
Hey Josh, you know you're my boy but how was what Calzaghe was doing any less respectful than Jones when he did it?
Roy Jones entrire career in his prime is one long highlight of those kind of antics.
Calzaghe was making a point that he could outflash Roy Jones.
People arn't giving Calzaghe nearly enough credit for this win, not only did he beat Roy Jones, but he was faster, slicker, he outboxed him, he totally dominated him.
Yes he showboated and yes Jones was not in his prime but Jones did that to lesser fighters than him his whole career.
And watching Jones in this fight and his later career has got me wondering what would have happened if he would have fought a prime Calzaghe.
I really think Calzaghe has a stronger will than Roy Jones. In his prime Jones never got close to being hit and hurt, being stood up to. I think he might always have responded like this when faced with a beating. He's an amazing fighter no question one of the best ever, but he doesn't have, and has never had imo a true warrior's heart like Calzaghe has. Calzaghe would always have been a problem for him.
Last night's fight is a good example.
I guarantee if the roles were reversed and Calzaghe had been badly cut and was getting completely outboxed he wouldn't have sought to survive like Jones did. Taking nothing away from Jones he took a real beating and stood up to the end, but his mindset was to make it to the finish.
Calzaghe in the same situation I believe would have made it do or die and just gone toe to toe around the 6th or 7th round and either got knocked out or else turned the fight around.
He's a real warrior and is willing to go out on his shield in a way few other boxers are.
I mean he was clearly really rocked by Jones in the first round, I initially thought he might not make it out of the round.
But his instinct wasn't to cover up, to survive, even to be more careful and fight defensively, a reaction that virtually every other fighter would have.
Instead he did the exact opposite, he dropped his hands stuck his head through the guard of Jones, goaded him into hitting him again and then beat Jones at his own game, completely breaking Jones' will.
I know it wasn't a prime Roy Jones, but it doesn't change the fact that Calzaghe imposed himself physically and mentally on him and literally through his showboating and antics brokoe Jones spirit.
I thought it was an awesome performance from Calzaghe.
The knockdown in some ways enhances it almost becuase he responded from it so well. There is no self doubt in Calzaghe at all, none.
When Pavlik had trouble in the first two round against Hopkins he seemingly gave up and resigned himself to defeat. He had no will in him to try and wrest the fight away from Hopkins. It was like he suddenly bottled it realising he was fighting the great Bernard Hopkins.
But Calzaghe even from a worse start doesn't entertain doubt for an instant. When he got put down it just gives him an air of defiance. He came back and started goading Jones, dropping his hands and completely dominated him. This is a man who just does not know how to lose.
When you look at his career now I think he's as good as Marciano. He's got that ethic, he just won't quit.

118-109 on all 3 score cards a complete joke why didn't Roy hit him when he was clowning about was beyond me i think Calzaghe was meant to win Roy never fought as though he wanted it really the fight was a joke and the scores were crazy.

Calzaghe is a great fighter, he gets credit for that, but he fought guys way past their prime then he is. I said from the begining out of the three big fights coming up (Cazlaghe-jones, Hopkins-Pavlik, De La Hoya- Pacquaio), this was the biggest mismatch if we all saw it how did Joe do anything anybody didn't expect?
Also Bx70Ny, if you knew half as much as you think you do you would see that Joe didn't need to figure anything out, ROy didn't do anything. He landed when he threw punches as often as Joe did, but he hardly threw anything, Joe had difficulty landing cleanly for a lot of it, and he didn't prove anything with this fight except that he is pretty fast.
In fact largely Joe's whole style I don't even feel is all that much boxing, my brother who doesn't know much about boxing thought it looked like point sparring, because thats how he punches. I give him all the credit in the world for getting away with it, when I can't see anybody else getting away with it, but if thats all you have then you are in trouble agaisnt Roy Jones Jr or Hopkins or Toney in their prime.
Markus is being a complete douche bag.
In a a rematch Calzaghe would destroy Hopkins AND YET you would still get tools like you saying "But he didnt fight Dawson"
Who moderates these boards?
I do and your shittin me.

Truth is Jones just can't pull the trigger anymore...It happens to fighters of his style when they reach a certain age...Fighters that rely on speed and combos...Happened to Ali, Happened to SRR, happened to Leonard....
That is the one bad thing about fighters who are unconventional...
Truth is Calzaghe is showing signs of age himself since the Kessler fight....He is sloppy at times and often smothers himself trying too hard....
It was a dissapointing fight yes but then again maybe people were looking to see the RJJ and Calzaghe of 2000 in there tonight not 2 guys at the twilight of their careers....
I hope both retire now....They both have made their legacy's and there is nothing left for them really

The version of Hopkins that showed up for the Pavlik fight is pretty damn good and I don't see anyone beating him including Calzaghe....If that version showed up
Lopve him or hate him Calzaghe won and he deserves credit for his victories but lets not get too worked up about him to the point you start sounding as stupid as his taunting looked
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I dont think it was a discraceful fight . Some of Joes taunting was distasteful but he was simply doing what Jones has been doing to his undermatched opponents for the last decade
Great win by Joe. He proved his superiority in the other guys backyard

Thats what gets to forums more than anything after a big fight, name calling of other posters and using the fight and the fact that you called it as some form of a fantasy advancement scheme. It looks like pulling others down just to climb over them.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
Imo it was nowhere near as disgraceful as Jones - Trinidad. A fight designed to make Roy Jones good enough to get in the ring with Calzaghe.
Calzaghe - Jones 8 or so years ago would have been fantastically competitive.
Just accept that the excitement generated by last nights fight was purely 'has Jones got one last big performance in him'
The answer was no. Simple as.
They'll both go down as 2 of the best super-middleweights of all time. It's a shame their careers have come to an end. I'm more disappointed about that to be honest.

You can't help but feel there was too much respect from Joe in terms of not going all out to overwhelm Jones. He could have thrown a lot more. But at the same time all that showboating was itself disrespectful.
Like a cat pawing at a toy and doing a little jiggle each time it makes its pounce.
id say more annoying than decent. All that clowning shit really pissed me off, i was hoping with this being maybe his last fight he would keep his hands up and fight like he did long ago when he actualy had an interest in boxing and wanted to win in style. Can see now he is clearly 100% bored of the sport and can't be bothered to keep the focus during a fight like he used to, it's all fun and games with him now since the kessler fight, sad. I hope this is it for him unless he fights Dawson and wants to go out in real style, not that shit he pulled last night, i think he could of stopped Roy if he kept his head down and didn;t stop giving 100%...
Bad thing is people now look at that like thatis his best, when when he wanted to fight he put on much greater shows, see Lacy, see Kessler... now fighitng guys like Hopkins, Roy, guys whom in his head he has already beaten before they get in the ring with hi, he puts on dodgy shows like that.

watch the fight again, he tried early to hit him when he dropped his hands and stuck his chin out, after missing 5 times he give up not wanting that to go through out the fight.

Exactly, Roy could do nothing more at his age. The fight was what it was, two aging greats where one had aged more than the other - and it NEVER was going to be anything else.
All last night showed is that we missed out on a possible brilliant match up which could have happened 2000-2003. Bilbo is spot on when he says that Joe would never give up and in that sense he genuinelly is a throwback, he wouldn't stand centr ring like a rabbit caught in headlights like Woods and all the other LHW defences. Roy would still be favourite but it would have been a hell of an entertaining fight against someone willing to put it all on the line.
The first round last night DID NOT prove that Roy would have schooled Joe in their primes (as some mentioned), and the subsequent 11 rounds DID NOT prove that Joe would have beaten Roy in their primes.
PS MarkusDarkus - stop being a TIT , last nights win is nothing to gloat about as it was to be expected, it didn't enhance Joe's career, it was only a payday. And in that regards ICE is right, it was a glorified sparring session, but in all honesty I don't think you could argue that it was ever advertised as anything different.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I personally didn't like the fight all that much, It kind of reminded me of Ali - Holmes.
I knew Jones had no chance from the beginning.
Joe did well and got the win but overall the win isn't that impressive considering Jones is clearly been past it for about 4-5 years now.
I just wish the fight happened when both were in their primes.

Ono i actually stopped watching the fight properly after about 10 rounds, thats never happened to me before. This fight was just total rubbish and a farce IMO.
It was like watching Muhammad Ali vs Larry Holmes, but it felt more like a circus to me as i've said already in a few threads.
Where was RJJ desire to give it one last shot ? and let it all hang out ? all he did was throw one punch at a time, and even when he might of stunned Joe Calzaghe. He never even went in for the kill, he has no killer instinct what so ever anymore.
And Joe Calzaghe's taunting was ridiculous, i don't mind some taunting in a fight. But he done it constantly and it just seemed like he was totally disrespecting a once great fighter RJJ. And what annoyed me more is RJJ let him do it, and never tried to counter Joe Calzaghe who was wide open and very hittable.
Im very disappointed i stayed up all that time, had my friends over and my girl. I was rooting for RJJ all the way even though i felt Joe Calzaghe was the favorite obviously.
And i get rewarded with a garbage fight like this, i knew RJJ was shot but i thought he would atleast try to win. But all he was there for was the paycheck which was obvious.
It felt like some freak exhibition fight to me Ono, very disappointing and sad for us fans.

Yeah maybe you're right. I do agree to an extent. It's like when i think about i'll always seperate this fight from their legacies. Like this fight didn't count.
It just had the same feel that Jones - Trinidad had to be honest. It was interesting early on but Jones couldn't sustain anything. I was rooting for Roy but he only ever threatened to show flashes of his brilliance. The taunting got a bit silly, but they were both at it. Calzaghe more so, but it's not like Jones hasn't done it before.
I got more annoyed with Bunce and McGuigan bigging up the performance. Yes he was quite good, but we knew he was quite good......45-0 already tells me that.
I'd have loved the fight to have happened about 6 or 7 years ago. Would have been a great fight.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I haven't read the first five pages, maybe I will at some point.
Either way this was the most predictable "big" fight ever. Ever. Fact. Granted its easier to predict a fight when you give fuck all about either guy.
I think I'll let that be my first and only fact.

Ok Floyd-Gatti was maybe more predictable. Obviously the fact expression is not for me.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I actually thought Calzaghe's showboating was pure comedy. The dance he did at the end of the 3rd has to be made into a gif.
He utterly destroyed and dominated Jones. He was better in every department. Take away the first round it was like Lacy all over again.
Awesome performance by Joe.
Though I still hate him :p

He would just throw single punches all the time, and just allow Joe Calzaghe too hold his hands down when he is 2 inches away from him. I was screaming at the screen just bloody hit him RJJ for goodness sake.
Joe Calzaghe was so wide open i can't believe RJJ didn't take those openings, and secondly all of Joe Calzaghes taunting was just ridiculous. It was like watching a clown in the ring, he done it in every round and in every minute of the round.
And the action was like a sparring session, RJJ would hit Joe Calzaghe with single punches every now and again. And then Joe Calzaghe would come wadding in landing mostly slapping punches to the body.
Agreed.
Roy Jones Jr. should be ashamed of himself for not showing up to fight or win.
Calzaghe should be ashamed of himself for his constant ridicilous taunting and behaving like that. No respect. No class.
The fight sucked. And years from now should not be looked upon as any kind of great accomplishment for Calzaghe or for boxing.
Roy is done. The killer instinct is gone. its been gone. And without it he cannot win at the elite level. The reflexes are not there anymore either, least not enough.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I don't know why people are so mad at Roy, he's done, he's been done, this was clear a long time ago.
If anything I guess you could be mad at him for taking the fight but there wasn't a whole lot he could do after that.

Don't bother i know his kind i respect Joe Calzaghe as a fighter, and i think he has great skills. But it really was sad watching this fight, i think we the fans missed out big time. Certainly not what i would call a championship fight.

The speed difference was massive. Calzaghe did anything he wanted to.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
Was this a case of Jones being past his prime or a over hyped fighter? Jones has made a career of fighting class c and d fighters. It really hard to tell how great he was. Never fought enough good fighters to tell. We do know Calzaghe beat his ass and maybe could have done the same thing in his prime.
