From what I've read, his girlfriend's 11-year-old son was in the car or in the gas station at the time. Vernon had a gun with him and the two suspects were thwarted and he chased them off. Somehow one was able to hide and ambush Vernon as Vernon chased the other. Vernon was shot 7 or 8 times in the back. I know that a lot of people will say what they would or wouldn't do, but you never know until you've been in that situation. R.I.P. Vernon "The Viper" Forrest and my prayers are with his family.

Considering how the media likes to emphasize certain things, I'm glad they aren't mentioning his gun. If he had one legally, it didn't really matter and didn't really help. Wasn't part of the story. This story explains why there was as chase anyhow-that part didn't really seem to make sense to me but chasing after a wallet thief makes more sense. I'm even more totally disgusted now hearing the circumstances around the actual shooting. In today's society, you have to damn near be paranoid when it comes to other people today. It's a damn shame.

Vernon was one of the most respectable men of any sport. Maybe even in life. Great boxer but an elite person. May God bless him and his family.

just from watching that clip i get the impression that even after his days as a fighter would of been up, he would of still had a bright future as a trainer, IMO all the tools, patience, desire to help, skill, knowledge, it's a fucking shame that men like this are taken away, especially when it's done by the very thing he was trying to eliminate, i hope the chicken shit bastard who shot him from behind ends up with a fate far more gruesome than the one he dished out

I knew of his deeds outside the ring, and it made me like him more. Inside the ring he was a great talent whom I was looking forward to seeing again.

For the record, I thought he won the second Mayorga fight.

His back to back victories over Mosley look even better when you look at what Mosley has done since. Still a suprise to me that he was easily Ko-Ed by Mayorga and then also lost their rematch on points but very sad day for boxing and will be sadly missed
