You crazy if he could not stop Guerrero he will not stop Sergio.
Martinez is old and shot. He resembles an aged RJJ. He's lost his speed, reflexes, timing, balance... He's pretty much custom made for Floyd now. Floyd would shred him.
Floyd would not beat Murray never mind Sergio, they are too big.
Murray beat Martinez in my opinion and Floyd would pick Martinez to pieces. He lunges and swings wildly and would get counterpunched to death by Floyd. Easy work. I hope they fight so you get to see him destroyed.
The problem is now that Martinez is on HBO and Mayweather is on Showtime so we'll never get to see it, which is unfortunate because when Mayweather was on HBO, Martinez wanted the fight.
Other better options than Khan/Alexander/Garcia are Trout/Lara/Canelo.

Just stay at 147 and let everyone come to you. If canelo really wants it he is young enough and will be making his biggest payday he should fight at welter for his next fight and get used to the weight and fight floyd may 4th 2014..if not, give trout a rematch and fight martinez or chavez or is the latter to big for him now.
Yes stay at 147 and continue to fight light hitting blown up light weights.
Bradley - Mosquito Mitts
Pac - Damaged goods
JMM - AARP
Khan - Fine China chin, terrible defense
Canelo only threat and still a little too raw. PGayF's resume of fighting singles hitters is a complete joke. Deserves Hall of fame but by no means ATG. " All Time Greatest Cherry Picker".
I would like to see him fight an equally athletic fighter like Devon Alexander or Trout.
Lol. This makes great sense.
You would rather an athletic fighter like devon as your preferred opponent rather than the undefeated fighter that beat him and pacman?!
Great stuff.

Absolutely, or Canelo at 154. @
ruthless rocco They are both legacy-improving fights too, whereas taking on the Guerrero's/Garcia's/Alexander's of the world don't do anything for his legacy. Isn't it odd that he won't even answer questions about facing Martinez? He won't even consider it as an option even when Martinez has been calling him out for years.
Martinez wont answer any questions about fighting ward.

Maybe because those questions aren't worth answering! The Martinez fight would only happen at 154...a weight that is FAR from ideal for Sergio. Floyd will not accept a catch weight (160) so that is a mute point. Add that to the fact that Martinez is on the slide and now injury prone...Floyd would school him badly. I can't see Canelo staying at 154 much longer (and there is no way he is coming down to 147 as someone suggested earlier). He already has stamina issue and struggling to make weight against a supremely conditioned athlete like Floyd would only make it more one sided in Floyd's favor. Floyd beats Canelo at 154. My point is...that Martinez and Canelo are not evenly matched on the weight issue to make these "legacy" fights for Floyd. Floyd is not going above 154...and to be honest...there is no reason for him to fight guys that will be outweighing him by 20-30 pounds come fight night.

Are you suggesting that Floyd would have an easier time with Sergio Martinez or Canelo than he would with Amir Khan or Danny Garcia? ;D

Martinez wont answer any questions about fighting ward.
Here's the point. No one will blame Floyd for not going up in weight. You can't blame a guy for refusing to move up in weight if he can make his weight class safely. I wouldn't blame Sergio for not going up to fight Ward. Bottom line.
However, if Sergio wanted to improve his legacy, wins over super middleweights, even average ones, are better than wins over average middleweights.
The reason why Sergio-Ward doesn't come up as often is because Sergio isn't the premiere, top-ranked fighter in the entire world. He's just a good middleweight. The expectations are much lower for him than for Floyd and rightly so.
Also, Martinez would be a heavy underdog to Ward at 168, whereas Floyd would be the favorite against Martinez or Canelo at 154. So, it's not like Floyd would be jumping up to fight a guy where he would be the underdog. This is a fight he would be supposed to win, but it is riskier than fights against junior welterweights; there is no doubt about that.
There are multiple posters saying that Floyd would wipe the floor with Sergio Martinez. You can't argue that at the same time as saying he shouldn't face him? For example, no one is claiming at the same time that Sergio shouldn't face Ward but that he also would beat him.
@ruthless rocco hates Sergio Martinez, but even he would prefer to see Floyd beat Sergio Martinez up than see Floyd face Amir Khan or Danny Garcia. I mean come on, it's not even a question.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s next 5 fights- in no particular order!
Floyd is the gate and ppv king along with being the best fighter on the planet. He is also a natural welterweight and not a big one. Why should he even move up for Alvarez? Lalonde came down to 168 for Lenard as did Dawson for Ward and Ward cant draw worms to a shit parade.

And Duran went up to 160 to challenge an ATG in Hagler and beat a good middleweight in Barkley.
But, I agree, there is no financial reason to face Canelo when Showtime will pay him the same amount of money to face lesser competition.
However, do we all agree that Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, and Devon Alexander are not as difficult opponents as Canelo, Trout, or Lara?

Indeed but that was a time when legacy had to do with actual pugilistic endeavors and not paydays alone. Leonard came out of a 3 year hiatus for Hagler 2 divisions north. When Armstrong challenged Ross he weighed in at 133. Those days are gone my friend and when in Rome....

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s next 5 fights- in no particular order!
Any truth to Fat Dan saying that Mayweather v Guerrero did bad numbers? Might be the incentive for Showtime to push him to meet a Canelo etc sooner rather than later. With the five fights floating surely hes not going into a Martinez or Canelo right away otherwise.

If Floyd Guerrero did poor numbers and Floyd can pick who he fights then Showtime are fucked, they've signed an Alex Rodriguez contract. If Showtime can pick the fighters they should make him fight Alvarez next and Martinez after that. Floyd can potshot Alvarez all night long and win a wide decision and Martinez at 154 in his first fight back after a broken hand would be even easier.
If it's true that Showtime have lost money on the weekend fight then they stand to lose a lot more over the rest of the contract and it's likely the only way they can recoup some of it will be to slash their boxing budget. This could fuck GBP up. HBO must be wetting themselves laughing right now if the PPV numbers are indeed rubbish.

Floyd fighting outside of his weight class or comfort zone would help immeasurably with his legacy. He doesn't have to do jack but he would be doing himself a big favour.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s next 5 fights- in no particular order!
I'm a little late on this. Curious to see who they Mayweather gets in there with this year, but I say if Pacquiao beats Rios well, then I say they choose Pac for early next May. I couldn't see anythig but Floyd countering him all night long. Mayweather must believe that he could do that.
You'd also have to think that the Canelo fight is 100% money in the bank, when ever they are ready to go, and with Canelo's age, that isn't going to change anytime soon unless Canelo needs to move to to 160.

Spot on. He's done it before too so he knows he can do the weight comfortably.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s next 5 fights- in no particular order!
Canelo is a very reasonable fight for Floyd to take. It's a good fight for boxing, because if Canelo manages to beat Floyd, we have another boxing superstar to carry boxing into a post-Mayweather/Pacquaio future. I love guys like Andre Ward, but they just aren't going to carry the sport.
I'm glad this fight is being taken seriously now. If Floyd fought him just 2 short years ago, people would have shit on Floyd for picking on a young, unproven guy.

Of course they would have because he was a young, unproven guy then. I had always thought him to be incredibly overrated, until he beat Austin Trout, who was coming off a thrashing of Miguel Cotto. That was a real win. He proved himself in that fight. I thought Trout was going to take that one on the cards, and I was wrong. I'm not suggesting that by beating Trout Canelo is god's gift to the junior middleweight division, but I mean up until then, I'm not even sure he had faced a true junior middleweight.

I clearly rate Martinez and Canelo over Khan and Garcia...BUT i do not see Floyd fighting over 154 EVER. So for the Martinez and Canelo fights to even have a remote chance of happening...it would have to be at that weight. And at that weight...i would have Floyd as the big favorite against either.
-
Canelo or martinez would have their biggest payday ever so they should just get used to the idea of making 147 and be happy with that.
Its about legacy as well and the plus points of them beating mayweather is huge. Take the risk and beat him.

Yeah we agree he should fight those two, but the statement I was responding to seemed to suggest that Floyd should move out of his weight class and thereby out of his comfort zone and in doing so would help his legacy. I wanted to point out that he has moved up in weight and has defeated all comers at those higher weights... There will come a point where moving up in weight will put him at a disadvantage, like it has toney. I think Floyd should fight Canelo at 154 and Martinez at 160 without gaining weight. By coming in around 147 and staying small and quick he'll be maintain his speed and dexterity and be able to out manoeuvre them all the while landing at will.

Floyd does not care about legacy it is all about the money. If he can get the same amount for fighting Guerrero than if he risked it against Saul then he will take the easier option.

Saul has proven he is the best at the weight by beating the top fighters, there is no doubt about that. We know Floyd is the best welter, the only real challenges out there are at the wights above and he should earn his big fat contract by fighting outside of his comfort zone otherwise he will bore everyone with 5 fights on points decisions and claiming he hurt his hands as to why he did not stop any of them when we all no he cannot punch hard at all.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s next 5 fights- in no particular order!
This morning...Lara ??? Provided of course he takes care of Alvarez, has a toe in the weight and 154 trinkets? Slap me silly but...I'd pay to see that one. Seems more realistic than a Martinez fight. Same network. Style wise it just appeals to me, and would not be near the opponent Mayweathers accustomed to. I'm no fan of Lara, but lastnight was impressive and I think he stepped up a notch. Too soon for him?

I don't think there would be any other selection of fighters worthy of a Mayweather fight. You may wanna throw in a Devon Alexander and/or a Lucas Matthyse, maybe even a Lamont Peterson- but, really, would you wanna see any other selection of fighters between 142 and 154 that you would wish to see Mayweather matched up against?
Well, my list is being checked off on, one by one.
Alvarez, done.
Khan, near done.
