The Bout
Round 1
This time, Earnie took it easy in the 'Opening Round', and was not Hell-Bent
on trying to take out 'Irish Pat' in the 1st-Round.
Earnie was both patient and cautious, as Duncan had decent hand-speed.
The action in the 1st-Round was 'even', as both Heavyweights were looking
to counter while looking for an opening.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round 2
In Round 2, Earnie {208 lbs.} used his strength to get in a bit closer, as Pat {203 lbs.}
was on the defensive side.
Earnie clubbed in a few right-hands as Pat moved backwards during the first-half
of the session.
But, as Earnie moved in at the {1:45 Mark}, Pat fired off quick 'left-right'
combinations to stall Earnie's attack.
Pat was more effective over the last minute of Round 2, as he was faster than Earnie.
Earnie tried for the Home-Run near the end of the Round, and just missed Pat's chin
with a whistling right-hand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Randall “Tex” Cobb certified Shavers as one of the hardest punchers ever. "Shavers hit me so hard I never knew what round it was."
Tex Cobb: "Nobody hits like Shavers. If anybody hit harder than Shavers, I'd shoot him. Earnie Shavers could punch you in the neck and break your ankle."
Ken Norton: "George Foreman could hurt a fighter with clubbing punches. He just caught me, it was my mistake, I was careless. On the other hand Earnie could put your lights out like nobody else. Definitely Earnie hit harder than Foreman."
Joe Frazier: "Earnie asked me to fight him. I told him point blank, ‘No way, Earnie. Hey, you hit too damn hard.’
They've never fought Wilder doe. ;)
Tex Cobb:"Larry Holmes doesn't hit as hard as Earnie Shavers. Nobody hits like Shavers. If anybody hit harder than Shavers, I'd shoot him.""Earnie Shavers could punch you in the neck and break your ankle."
Tex Cobb:"Larry Holmes doesn't hit as hard as Earnie Shavers. Nobody hits like Shavers. If anybody hit harder than Shavers, I'd shoot him.""Earnie Shavers could punch you in the neck and break your ankle."
@Gandalf right on bro.
I don't think that question will ever be answered.
If we go by end result: No man has ever been injured the way Jess Willard was against Dempsey: broken orbital bone, fractures, teeth(several) knocked out...
Not saying Dempsey hits harder than Shavers or Tua or Tyson, or Wlad.. hell sounds like loaded gloves, but we dont know that either...so how else can a question be answered without it being subjective as opposed to objective?
I never said he was not a puncher. On the contrary, his punch seemed to be the ONLY thing he had going for him at all. I said his power dropped off remarkably in the realm of what we TODAY call HW.
I said he failed against heavy opposition. And he failed against quality opposition.
He was a cruiser-cruncher
He was a bum-buster
Almost exclusively!
LOL...... @Max Power
Are you still arguing against what Ali, Holmes, and Lyle were all quoted as saying??
Give it a rest, bro.
Once again.... pick your battles. When you start saying that three former fighters are full of shit for saying that Shavers was the one who punched them the hardest...... what are you arguing against? This isn't a fan's point of view, or even PhD in punching power. These are the actual recipients of the punches, expressing their own, personal opinion.
Do you play poker? Are you familiar with the old Kenny Rogers song?
That would be my advice to you.
George Chuvalo would have knocked his ass out and YOU ALL KNOW THIS
@Master
I thought you told me Frazier didn't duck hard punchers? ;)
Based on mass size multiplied by KO results.
Earnie Shavers at > 6' 0 1/2" and 207 lbs.
Was, for his size, one of the Top 5 hardest punchers.
Now I like better what I am hearing Bill.
Except now the bench mark is different. Now your claiming Shavers is "lb for lb" the hardest puncher of all time.
I don't necessarily agree with that either! I think Tyson hit way WAY harder than Shavers and can't really see any way it could be otherwise. Shavers didn't LOOK like he hit harder than Tyson.
But in any case, this is a lot better than saying he hit harder than someone like Stiverne for instance, who would shake Shavers best punch off as if it were nothing and then knock his head off into the cheap seats immediately after LOL
Der Max
I stated that Earnie was one of the Top 5 'hardest hitters' based on
his size and mass.
By using 'quantom mechanics' coupled with torque, equals mass force.
Earnie is right up there.
'Round 3'
Both fighters meet at Center-Ring.
'Irish Pat' decides to test Earnie's chin, and starts off by wailing away
with a fast flurry.
The punches bounce off of Earnie's head, but he is not bothered by the
blows.
'Irish Pat' slams another hard flurry into Earnie, and then backs out fast.
Earnie trudges forward, and is starting to put aggressive pressure on Pat
who is backing away slowly.
At the {1:40 Mark}, Earnie slams in a hard left-hook, and digs a hard right
into Pat's side. Pat gasps, and circles to his left.
Earnie 'zings' Pat with a looping right-hand. Pat is shaken, and grabs onto
Earnie's arms, and holds on until the Referee breaks them apart at the
{2:05 Mark}.
Earnie starts working {one-two's} into Pat at the {2:30 Mark}.
Earnie traps Pat along the Ropes, and starts slamming him with hard blows
to the upper-body and face.
At the bell, Pat looks weary and his face is red.
Earnie was a big puncher for sure. He was a farm boy. Chopping trees and throwing barrels of hay made him strong as an ox.
Yeah Earnie was a hard puncher for sure.
Tommy Morrison, LEnnox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Geroge Foreman, Samuel Peter, David Tua, Hasim Rahman, Bermane Stiverne, Deontay Wilder, Razor Ruddock, Michael Grant, Chris Arreola, Henry Akinwande.
Those are a small selection of REALLY hard punchers as per recent HW standards. They smash the lights out of GOOD opponents. And HEAVY opponents.
A good question is could Earnie Shavers hit harder than David Haye!?
And Tex Cobb KOed him so what?
Fighters talk smack all the time, ESPECIALLY when it comes to pumping up their own wins.
Muhammad Ali himself is another member of the "Club of Nostalgia Delusion"
Years after his fight with Karl Mildenberger one of the most featherfisted guys to ever step foot into the ring, he later claimed that this Mildenberger was the hardest puncher he fought.
It seems that "Cover up Clay" was better at it with his mouth than he was covering up in the ring LOL ;)
I do understand poker. That is why it's ironic for me that you cannot see it's these fighters who are keeping the poker face here.
Fighters talk smack all the time. And the BEST smack talk comes when they are self-glorifying their own wins.
Everybody knows now and knew then that Shavers was a total bum. Except some guys struggled and lost to this bum. None of them are going to claim they struggled with a bum.
OBVIOUSLY they are going to want to pump up their Shavers win because it does justice for their resume. Especially if they all band together on it cause they all fought him.
The problem is, the comments these guys made flies totally in the face of all the evidence.
Cobb was wasted by a guy I never heard of and was never any good anyway.
Holmes was wasted by Tyson so dramatically he probably doesn't even REMEMBER the punch! Yet got up from Shavers to win and even claims to REMEMBER the punch.
Ali also claimed featherfist Karl Mildenberger hit him hardest! And was never even DROPPED by Shavers but was dropped often by many other boxers!
How can Ken Norton's word mean anything when he layed crumpled on the canvas left right and centre by various opponents. He would barely remember what day of the week it was each time!
And on and on!
All of these guys (bar Norton) BEAT Shavers, but suffered stoppages and KO's to other fighters.
They are OBVIOUSLY and BLATANTLY lying, heresay and self-swaggery is exactly what it is!
These kinds of comments are utterly worthless and should play absolutely zero role in Shaver's power assessment.
If you cannot see this, your analytical skills suck!
Hardest puncher might be Lewis or Foreman those guys might have it on lock down to be honest. Also who never get mention is Bowe that guy hit like a train never gets mention was a champ to even.
Shavers hit Holmes with the biggest fucking shot i have ever seen yet his skill and stamina were so fucking bad that Holmes was allowed to recover. Holmes had a chin was a champ and could box with the best of him so why the fuck are we talking about shavers not more about Holmes.
'Round 4'
Earnie comes out with intention of ending the bout, as 'Irish Pat' looked
weary at the end of Round 3.
Earnie starts off with forward-pressing, and sends in hard blows to Duncan's
body.
Pat goes back to the Ropes, and tries to fend off the punches. But Earnie will
not be denied, and continues with a steady flow of hard body-punches.
Pat comes back with a '3-Punch' combination, but he has no 'zip' behind his
punches. Pat lands a good right-hand lead to Earnie's face at the {1:30 Mark}.
Earnie rocks Pat with a long right-hand to the head at the {1:45 Mark}. Earnie
keeps up the pressure.
Pat in now bleeding from the nose, and his face is beet red. Pat reels on
his heels at the {2:20 Mark} after taking another barrage of blows to the head.
Earnie nearly drops Pat, when he lands a left-hook to the head and hard right-hand
into the left side Pat's body at the {2:30 Mark}.
Pat spends the last 20-Seconds of the Round in 'survival-mode'.

Silver Slipper ~ Las Vegas, Nevada
Earnie Shavers ~ 22-2-0 {22 KO's} ~ 208 lbs. ~ {Age; 25 years, 7 months}
vs.
Young Agabab ~ 14-0-0 {13 KO's} ~ 196 1/2 lbs. ~ {Age; 24 years, 3 months}
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Young Agabab was a 24 year-old - 6' 2" - 196 lb. southpaw Heavyweight
from Nigeria.
Agabab won the West African Heavyweight Championship in 1970. He then
came to Los Angeles in December 1970 to improve his boxing-skills.
He then went out to Las Vegas in February 1971 to get some work as a
sparring-partner at Johnny Tocco's Gym, and to sharpen his skills.
He was a fast-handed 6' 2" southpaw who had a good straight left-hand
with power.
The Bout'
Earnie walked across the Ring, and met the Nigerian at Center-Ring.
Earnie tossed out '3' measuring left-jabs, as the lanky southpaw countered
with a long left-hand lead.
Earnie then came back with a straight right-hand, that landed square on
Young Agabab's chin.
The Nigerian flopped backwards and reeled back across the Ring.
Earnie then moved forward, and reeled-off a '4-Punch' barrage that sent the
Nigerian into the Ropes and onto the canvas at the {0:22 Mark}.
Young Agabab was given an '8-Count' by Referee - Mills Lane.
The Nigerian got on his fast-wheels, and literally ran around the Ring as Earnie
chased him for the next 35-Seconds.
Earnie finally trapped Agabab long enough to unload his 'heavy-arsenal', and
the Nigerian collapsed in a heep at the {1:14 Mark} after taking a hard right-hook
to the left side of his head.
Referee - Mills Lane counted out Young Agabab @ 1:25 of Round 1.
AP Report > "Shavers Wins By Knockout"
"Nigerian - Young Agabab Loses For The 1st-Time In 15-Bouts"
@Bill Paxtom that is a terrific fight synopsis @Max Power what is it here that you cannot understand?
Round 5
'Irish Pat' is slow in coming out for Round 5.
Earnie, knowing that he has a hurt opponent in front of him, takes it
easy for the first 1-Minute, and eases into Pat with light-punches.
At the {1:10 Mark}, Earnie picks up the pace and forces Pat back to the
Corner.
There, Earnie unloads with his heavy-bombs. 'Irish Pat' takes about a
half-dozen bombs before going down at the {1:26 Mark}.
Pat gets up at the '6-Count', and looks hurt. But he wants to continue.
Earnie moves in, and rips away with left-hooks and several right-hands
to the left-side of Pat's head, as Pat turns to his right-side.
Pat Duncan goes down on his right-side, and is counted out at the
{1:57 Mark} of Round 5.
AP Report > "Shavers Captures Nevada State Heavyweight Title"
There! Right there! @Max Power @Beanflicker Right there, you see Earnie beating a Top 25 heavyweight. "Irish" Pat Duncan, a big man with very fast combinatins for a heavyweight, highly-touted, touted even higher than Scott LeDoux or Duane Bobick was, for that time. EARNIE SHAVERS RUINED DUNCAN'S CAREER BEFORE IT EVEN GOT STARTED. A devastating KO for Shavers that night.
Brockton Blockbuuster,
Correct on 'Irish Pat' Duncan.
A Good Heavyweight.
After the 'loss' to Earnie Shavers on September 28, 1971 >
'Irish Pat' won 14-of-15 over the next 2 1/2 years.
By March 1974 >
'Irish Pat' {Age; 25 years, 2 months} got to > 33-5-1 {23 KO's}, which included wins
over quality opponents;
* Fred Lewis
* Elmer Rush
* Danny McAlinden {@ Royal Albert Hall, London, United Kingdom}
Pat Duncan reached the #15 WBC Heavyweight position in February 1974.
Thanks Triple 'B'
Earnie Shavers 'ruined' Young Agabab's career.
After going 14-0-0 with {13 KO's}, the highly-touted and talented Nigerian
'never' fought again.
He was laid out for 15-Minutes on the canvas, after getting KO'd in the
1st Round by Earnie.
'Word to the Wise' ....... "Don't mess with Earnie"
You amaze me how much crap you come out with, are you old enough were you even born when
Ali and co were fighting, I WAS I remember Ali fighting in the 60's when I was a kid.
It seems you like to be controversial, or there again you maybe full of SHIT I myself go for option 2
it seems to fit.;)
Holmes and Ali beat Shavers so why would they say he hit hard?
Holmes could have said Tyson hit me the hardest and Ali could have said Foreman.

weekly 'Wednesday Night at the Fights' circuit.

Heavyweights and build them into Top Contenders.
This will be Earnie's 1st-Bout in Las Vegas, and it is scheduled for 8-Rounds.
Earnie is listed as being from Youngstown, Ohio.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Though Lee Estes has a poor record, he has a reputation of being able to 'take it'.
Quietly, the Silver Slipper posts Lee Estes as having a record of '17-wins' with
{11 KO's}. There is no mention of his losses.
