In a sport such us boxing early ends will always happen. Its what makes this sport the greatest in the world because from first bell to last it can end at any moment. Ricky should fight on, not for the fans nor his ego but because even at 30/31 he still is more than capable of a few vintage performances like what he produced against malignaggi
But let's not forget that Paulie has no punch and hasn't stopped an opponent since 1764. Hatton was able to use his quick feet to get in close and show no respect while doing so. In a few recent fights now Hatton has been stopped or else wobbly. Mayweather, Lazcano, Pacquiao, heck even Collazo who isn't a big puncher had him in some trouble. Hattons chin does seem to be wavering.
Part of me would like one more fight to say farewell, but I would have him nowhere near any big punchers again. Not after being flat out for several minutes last time out. Nobody is ever out for that long in a major fight. It was worrying.
Paulie doesnt have it in him to knockout anyone of any reasonable standard thats been conclusively proved.
But what has also been shown in his fights with cotto and diaz is that he is an extremely awkward opponent to get to grips with and to date only hatton has managed to completely expose and dominate him over 12rounds (TKO in the 11th)
Hatton isnt the great great fighter of the 21st century, thats been conclusively proven. But for anyone to claim that by watching 6minutes of boxing they can say he is past his sell by date is madness.
Pacquiao would of done the same thing to the same hatton that fought kostya tszyu. Im the biggest hatton nut on this site and even i can accept that!!
I've been defending Malignaggi a bit recently, so can see he has balls considering his fists are made of cotton. He is a tricky customer and at his best is a handful for a lot of people. Hattons performance was impeccable, didn't put a foot wrong.
TBH I still have a hard time getting my head around those two rounds against Manny. It was so frustrating to watch. I don't think Hatton at his best simply gets blown out by Manny though, Hatton on the night fought one of those most reckless displays I have seen in a long while and got blasted for it. It's a fight that I really struggle to sit through, just horrible.
Like I say I wouldn't mind him coming back for another crack, but to do it for the right reasons and to watch that chin. I was always against a Khan fight, but I would love for him to comeback and knock Khan for six and then just walk away and say "That's me lot!". Would be nice for the fans too, but Hatton is seemingly as far from the ring as ever.

paulies one of those rare combinations of horrible to fight and horrible to watch
Manny Pacquiao is more than beatable (unlike floyd) but it was tactically the worst possible display anyone has ever put up against both himself and during a massive vegas showdown.
What the hell floyd snr was teaching him for 12 weeks god only knows. But reckless lunges, no use of footwork or jab and failure to combinate that sharp straight left = a very early night against manny which he got
It was a horrible disasterous display that deserved what it got. It was a carcrash of a defeat....it wasnt a slow painful beatdown ala pac-delahoya, calzaghe-lacy which really is a career ender!!

Hatton has managed to do what nearly all "popular" US boxers haven't managed in recent times and that is to build up an audience willing to follow and watch their fighter.
I would take VD's comments with a pinch of salt TBH.

It couldn't even fill up the venue though. American fighters don't have in venue support. Pavlik is the only one who comes close to it these days. The Marquez fans far outnumbered the two Mayweather fans!

It couldn't even fill up the venue though, and if that is the most meaningful fight to have taken place in America in recent times then it's no wonder the place is sinking. sad but true
when tyson, bowe, holyfield fought eachother everyone in america knew they were fighting. Nowadays id guess at the very least 40% of americans have no idea who floyd mayweather is :(:(:(

I would disagree with that mate, there maybe not fans but im quite sure your average American who has been in the country in the last ten years knows who Floyd Mayweather is.
If your American is this correct?? Ive seen him on most national news stations he has done Letterman, WWE, etc etc.

Ouch, you quoted me before my sensible head decided to erase the excess rhetoric. Of course, I don't think a failure to provide the best fights with the best supporters has led to a massive decline in the US economy. Gulp. The economy has been one of my interests recently and the decline of the US has been a main feature, I think this might have got into my mind there.
Moving on from that....personally I don't know what Americans think about Mayweather but he doesn't have an active fanbase. If anything his mouth turns people off. Great skills, but he could use a new gargling tonic.

WWE/F is hardly mainstream is it?
And if it is then obviously more people know a fake actor like stone cold more than the current greatest fighter in the world:(
The problem with boxing right now is that their arent enough fighters with the combination of flamboyant and good to make it interesting for your casual fan.
The likes of marquez, cotto, pavlik, klitschko just wont cut it - mayweather, haye and jones however will always be sellable because of the way they go about promoting their events.
You can hate him as much as you want but the sport is far greater now floyd is back!!

I was being flippant.
I would love to thinkg the avrage American loved boxing the way they used to,but the sad reality is they dont.
Apart from Mayweather is there any other American boxers that would get 1 million ppv?

Don't you live in Korea or something? How can you know what Hatton's US following is? You can't. Why? Cuz he really doesn't have one

Actualy most of the Americans I spoke to while in America wanted Hatton to beat Floyd.
An American bloke came up to me in Chicago airport to say he wanted Hatton to beat Floyd.
Almost all the Americans in Vegas wanted Hatton to beat Floyd.
This includes black Americans which supprised me a bit.
My point is that Americans like Hatton more than they like Floyd.
Re: Does boxing need hatton back?
Yes American's hate Floyd Mayweather Jr. had Ricky Hatton been from Antartica and named Joey Joe Joe Junior Shabadoo people would have cheered for him.
The majority of Americans got our first peak at Hatton when he fought Collazo and Ricky got booed and no one liked him from that moment on.

So because you spoke to a handful of people that said they wanted Hatton to win than that pretty much means the whole US feels the same way, right? Yeah ok. :beat: Take it from someone that actually lives in the US. Americans do indeed like Hatton. But that's cuz he gets knocked out in spectacular fashion. Put it this way. If Hatton didn't have his fellow countrymen fly in to watch him fight in the US than all his fights would be in front of like 1,000 people or so. He wouldn't fill half the arena much less sell out
