It is beyond me why a criminal needs tens of thousands of pounds a year spent on them whilst behind bars. If you want austerity, then strip the prisoners of their easy lives. Prison should be punishment. All these yobs could do with a stretch inside.

I am usually left of the political spectrum on many issues but 1 of them is not being soft on criminals.
Speaking of criminals. I remember an article a few weeks back that a group of burglars had entered a man's home and 1 of them got into a violent confrontation with him and ended dead with a 1 stab wound. You know what happened? The man and his son was charged for murder. And no I'm not kidding.

And speaking of jails and prisons, remember some old thread about it and Skel one of our best members describe it as being a sort of paradise? Totally, it seems to be a bit of a joke. We need prisons like the one that Oscar Wilde wrote "The Ballad of Reading gaol" in. Either man you up or melt you down. Though clearly I don't believe Oscar Wilde should have been in jail, but these little bastards should be.

I did see videos of the police in many parts of the places that are being looted were seriously outnumbered. As in maybe 10 of them against a crowd of 50 or 60 and they had to back off for fear of their life. And you know what? I can't blame them. They were just undermanned and overpowered in many spots. These officers have families to go home to, it would be suicide to take on a large crowd like that.

I agree that they are pieces of shit, but the UK seems to have a lot of them. I have never seen gangs of kids hanging out on street corners causing a menace in 8 years of living overseas and yet its the first thing I see when I come home. It is an endemic UK problem and these people are English and there are a lot of them. It has been building generation after generation and seems to have spread like wildfire whilst under Labour rule.
I imagine it is going to hurt the UK in many ways. I was talking to a Korea friend who was going to visit this fall, but has totally cancelled her trip fearing what she has been seeing in the news. The UK relies a lot on tourism, if this spreads the UK is fucked more than it can ever imagine. The Olympics are looking like a serious worry to me. This won't continue like this forever, but I can see it flaring up sporadically. The UK is looking like a shell of a country and is overrun by out of control vermin. I would further it all with serious government policy too, and that includes the nationalisation of all public services. Make bills cheaper, make public transport cheaper, make education better rather than this academy crap. Honestly it isn't that hard to improve the UK, but it does mean moving away from corporate interests and actually having concern for your citizens over the concerns of economic growth or protecting particular corporations. Guns are irrelevant, but serious investment into local communities is a must.
This nonsense about cutbacks is just bullshit. It is all because of the financial meltdown and it's all just an excuse for austerity. It is a hoax, the banks themselves should all be nationalised too and be made to serve in the public interest. Governments have been more concerned with growth and that has included encouraging people to live on credit and make themselves poor. It's utter crap really. Ban all credit cards and allow every person to own only one house.

I don't know if it's Thatcherism, it could be something else. I found these 2 responses while I was reading the comment section of an article about the riots. I found it to be really interesting and I think it possibly could hold some merit.

I do know that after the 60s counter culture revolution and a rebellion of conservative social mores of the past generation that American society did degenerate into a level of debauchery not seen by any generation before it. I also remember reading about the overall crime rates from the FBI by decade clearly showed the 80s and 90s had higher numbers of overall crime committed by this group. Generation Y of course, this generation is clearly much worse.
I would probably need to search the internet for these studies. But I'm pretty certain that a rejection of the old moralistic social mores have led to this current generation of degenerates that are so prevalent not only in the UK but also the US.

And GB that is perhaps the case, maybe it goes further back, but either way we can all see that what we have is a disaster. I believe my left wing politics is a way to bring society together, but it will take generations, but what has taken little time is this thing we have for society today to fall apart. The age of cut backs and austerity on those who don't really take that much is just a cunt move, the best way to improve society is to invest and talk to those within and it seems this government has done the opposite.

Where's the tear gas? Where are the barricades? As police their job is to PROTECT and SERVE and I've seen very little if any evidence of either.

Well to be honest Miles I take most of what all you, Lyle, GB and Marb are saying to be truth. However let me just add that while I was brought up to hate Thatcher, i have to point out that she created a much needed (if ill fated) bubble for which our nation was able to float on. We were in a COMPLETE MESS before Thatcher effectively flogged our nation to the open market. What I mean is, I fail to see how re-nationalising our services will help us at all? Just look at the NHS!

It's just staggering isn't it? These goons have been running amok for what? Four nights now? The police clearly cannot handle it, the army hasn't been deployed and people STILL maintain that the innocent should rely on governement to protect them?

Had 3-4 of these thugs been gunned down on the first night by people defending their property and lives? This crap would have petered out pretty quick. Hell, had people simply fired over the heads of these groups they likely run.

This shit all started because the police shot some silly cunt.
How did those "warning" gunshots do in the LA riots? There were 50-60 killed, right? Thousands injured? So far there has been one man shot and three people killed in a hit-and-run connected to this madness. It's petering out.
Many communities protected their homes/businesses with sheer numbers and baseball bats/clubs/coshes. They didn't need guns to scare the rats away.
