From here it seems that any fool can carry one around, so the regulations must be very lax.
I live in a near-commie state, Hawaii.
VERY strict regulations. Must pass a test, can only buy one handgun a year, tough to get a carry permit etc.
I more or less ignore them. What's the old saying? I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by six?
The regs vary from state to state, by a lot.
The one reg I think is most useful and folks who fear guns have the biggest problem with is concealed carry. Can you imagine being a criminal and not knwoing if your target is armed or not? Or if the next guy over is? Can you imagine how much more cautious you'd be?

No way that's a recipe for utter carnage.
No, actually it isn't. If it were? The NRA Convention would have mass killings every year.
There are mass killings every year for people that own guns.
Yup. And for every one there are literally THOUSANDS of meetings among people carrying where there is no violence whatsoever.
Yup. You can't shoot someone if you don't have a gun.
I dont know if thats the answer.
Though there hasnt been a mass killing out here since our gun clean up. We all had guns, but there was an amnesty and a time limit to hand them in. Otherwise big fines jail etc.
Now only criminals, police and security have them. Unless you are a licenced hunter or target shooter then the guns are usually single shot in most cases so theres time to get them off of you if you do want to flip out in public :).
There has been shoot outs but no mass murders of innocents in the streets like there once were. Our bikers try to rub out other gangs occasionally and the odd person gets caught in between, thats about all.

LOL yeah and THAT'S why nobody ever kills with a knife or a rope or a club or their hands or a car or a fertilizer bomb etc.
The right answer is of course being able to meet such a threat with a gun. I have done so twice in my life.
I'll take my chances against a knife, rope, hands or club over a gun.
You've been in two gun fights? I love a good western. How'd it go?

It's obviously not the answer.
If guns were the problem? The Swiss would have mass killing all the time.

So you dont have to be a member of a pistol club?
Its strictly to take home for protection then?

Nope. Fights weren't necessary. I pumped the shotgun on one occasion and the guy who had broken into my house ran and on the second occasion I fired over the heads of three guys with bats. They chose not to proceed.
The point you are missing is if YOU have a gun? You needn't take any chance at all, or at least far less often.
Unless you are silly enough to think criminals/bad guys actually go unarmed because the law says they must.

Glad to hear it. Sadly our most gun strict cities remain our most gun violent areas.

In Hawaii no ongoing shooting/competency requirement and very tough to get a carry permit so most guns are legally used only for home protection.
Again it varies greatly from state to state. When I lived in Pennsylvania, as an example, hunting was extremely popular so everyone, and I mean EVERYONE I knew had family members competent with the use, repair, modification of firearms. Much easier to get a carry permit there. The burden is on the state to demonstrate why you are a danger. That kind of law is called "shall issue."
Re: Carnage on a Norweigan Island
oh we are unarmed public now. the fools bend and melted down all repeaters. And single shots have to be licenced and you have to be a target club member for a pistol.
(Intead of ruining all those great guns: they should of stored them to hand back to us all, if we get invaded by Indonesia's billions). After our first line of defense gives out.

Your guys choice of course, but being subject to the whim of others seems, well, inconsistent with freedom over time in my view ;)
In that context an experienced, and well armed, local militia seems like a good idea.
Thanks as always for your thoughts.
Re: Carnage on a Norweigan Island
Cheers you too.
My biggest fear is that when 'not if ' society breaks down for one reason or another it will be the public who will suffer at the hands of the armed.

As a buddy of my Dad's always says, "When a revolution or catastrophe comes? Nobody will be asking about permits."
;)

I agree with you that the people using the weapon are far more dangerous than the actual weapon itself. However, the more readily available guns are the more chance of them falling into the wrong hands.
That's just common sense.
If I lived in America I would probably own a gun too.
