He said he could go as low as 156 to fight either of them, but those fights just aren't realistic at all. Neither guy will come up that high and if they did they would almost certainly lose.
I don't think Mayweather would have a problem at 156lbs. He was probably at least that weight when he stepped into the ring against Marquez but we'll never know since he refuses to have the unoffical weigh-in.
What was Martinez ring weight?
168.

Well, one person out of 350 million or so isn't bad.
BTW, I did you a terrible disservice by telling you not to start Price in your hockey pool. He's been great all year and Luongo and Giguere have been average at best. My bad.

Are you talking about hockey? That's a dead sport in the US. Even boxing isn't that dead in the US yet.

Yeah, it's dead in most of the States. New York, Boston, and Chicago are probably the strongest markets at the moment I guess, but Bettman has run the game into the ground int he States.

Shit that's too much weight to give up! Your right.... Mayweather wouldn't do it. Pacquiao might be dumb enough though.

You'd have to be dumb to come up that far against Martinez - or Williams for that matter.
I scared the crap out of my wife jumping off the couch with that one. Awesome.

Head butt, HEAD BUTT!
It's weird watching the replays, he almost snaps his punches down, even against Williams and his fist isn't straight out, it's pointing down as well.

I like Paul but the macho shit has gotten in the way for him. That's not to say he should have been a tall Rigondeaux all this time you can be an action fighter while still showing some respect for the other guy's power. Emmanuel Steward's crazy, he was not fighting the right fight. Coming forward is fine, and throwing a lot of punches was always going to be key to him winning this fight but you don't have to be wild about it and the jab is a legal punch.

Hey, it aint our fault the cup hasn't been back to Canada since. You can blame bettman for that one. whats with all the riots whenever a Canadian team loses an important game?

I don't give a fuck about the Cup coming to Canada, I hate all the other Canadian teams except for Ottawa. I cheered against both Edmonton and Calgary when they lost to American teams and Detroit and Boston are my 2nd and 3rd favorite clubs.
As for the rioting, Vancouver was full of yahoo's and nutjobs in 1994 and it still is today, there's a small segment of the population that just ruins things for everyone else. And as for Montreal, I'd guess it's pretty much the same thing.

I totally agree. You can throw a lot of punches and some of them can be jabs, but you should at least expect something to come back and be ready for that too.
When Williams got tagged in the first I hoped that he would tone it down a bit and just build into the fight, but he wouldn't relent. Maybe this is what Williams needed, as I don't think he will be quite this reckless again.
Martinez is too good to just throw caution to the wind against.
-
Re: Martinez - Williams fight thread (Poll included)
Even Morales was defensively responsible. If he wasn't he would have burned out long ago. Paul has gigantic balls but its not all about that.
After watching the replay a number of times, you literally couldn't set yourself up for a big straight left any better. Wide lead left hook, leaning in, chin up. Boom.

Yeah, I had a lady in Ottawa that was a sens fan. They're haven't been the same since Chara left. Edmonton is like a personal bargain bin.. Sather brought a free garbage for garbage pipeline from Edmonton. I haven't like Calgary since Fleury left. Gotta love the way detroit builds a team. Boston is a rival but I would like to see Thomas get a cup before retirement. I just hate the wuss league bettmas created, with this posterboy bull$hit....The riots are funny though, the first thing you guys burn is always a cop car. lol

Yeah, Detroit is one of the best run teams in all of sports. I started watching them when I was a kid because of Yzerman (still my all-time favorite player) and it was amazing to watch them go from a laughing-stock to the model franchise. I still have a soft spot for them, except when they are playing the Canucks (aka Chicago's bitches).

They're a good team, but they just lost 7-1 to the 'Hawks. IMO they need a new coach, if only to shake up the team. They look like they've bought in to all the preseason talk declaring them soon-to-be Cup champions and forgot that they have to try.

I always had a softspot for the wings because of players like Howe and Shanny... Its the essence of hockey. Score/Assist/Fight... Thats why its a shame there arent more hockey fans,( then again thats partly because of the way the leagues gone) . Basketball/football/baseball.. get into a fight, suspension and get fined 250k.... IN hockey, they hand you a stick and send you out there to rap someone across the knuckles with it. get into a fight and you get to sit down and rest for 5 minutes. (though i didnt see a lot of fights in goal.. i had to wait for bench clearing donnybrooks to see any action)

The whole fight took less than 10 minutes. Williams OK'd in the 2nd round. HBO started the 24/7 series early which was Hockey.

Just look at the direction where Martinez is going. Williams sees him going there and follows, but has absolutely no anticipation of that left following through from such a position. That is a crazy punch, just exquisite.

Re: Martinez - Williams fight thread (Poll included)
I read a column that said Pacquiao and Mayweather want no part of Martinez after this fight. I don't see it that way. I think both of them would present problems that Martinez can't solve. Martinez would never have the opportunity to capitalize on the kind of exchange Martinez won on the Williams knockout, their balance is too good. Martinez is fast but both are faster, more accurate and more versatile. I wouldn't be surprised if either took the fight at 150.

I've noticed that right away on live telecast.
It was like watching a comedy sketch.

Re: Martinez - Williams fight thread (Poll included)
Re watched this AM and man, Martinez is a extremely thinking fighter. He just baited Williams all round with that left. Hit him with about 4 tenderizing him and then that last one....hellish! :angryxo4:

I just re-watched it, and Martinez threw that exact same punch three times. The third was punch was the knock out. That old idiom "Third times a charm" come though again.

They would have to come up in weight because Martinez can't go below 156 plus part of the intrigue is Pacquiao (or Mayweather for that matter too) fighting for a title in yet another weight division. I just think Martinez would be a more difficult opponent for Manny than Shane (past it), Marquez (not effective above 135), and Cotto (already beat). Me personally, I'd rather see Manny fight Sergio than Berto or Bradley, and I think he'd get knocked out.

Re: Martinez - Williams fight thread (Poll included)
Just wanted to add that I was at this fight last night. My god what a punch. Poor Paul never seen it coming. From where my wife and I were sitting Williams back was to us but as soon as the punch landed he looked as if a tree had just gotten chopped down and it took him so long to hit the canvas. Everything seemed in slow motion. I am very pleased to think my wife and I are going to be at a knockout of the year candidate. What a fight and a great memory.
