Both Champion's were sitting next to each other at Ringside, at the front-left and near
Karl Mildenberger's corner.
Joe Louis scored Round 1 for the Champion, and Round 2 for Karl Mildenberger.
Max Schmeling scored round 1 'Even', and Round 2 for Karl Mildenberger.
Both later stated, that Cassius looked 'completely puzzled' by the southpaw-stance and
squared-up style of the Challenger.
Oddly, Referee - Teddy Waltham scored Round 2 'Even'.
Judges > Nat Fleisher {United States} and Felix Ohlert {Germany} 'properly' scored Round 2 for Karl Mildenberger.

Re: Karl Mildenberger ~ 'I Had The Formula To Beat Cassius Clay'
During Round 3
Howard Cosell, mentioned that he had scored the first 2-Rounds for Cassius Clay, but
had the 2nd Round very close.
Howard Cosell >
"Cassius told me that he was going to start very fast, and possibly take the Challenger
out of here right away. But, Cassius did not come out as fast as he had predicted."
'Mildenberger is presenting all sorts of problems for Cassius. He's making Cassius miss.
That left-handed stance is really causing a problem."
Howard did mention that Mildenberger 'hurt' the Champion on '2' separate occasions
in Round 3.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Howard did ask Joe Louis on what he thought:
Joe Louis >
"Mildenberger is fighting better than I expected. He's taking it to Clay. He fought well in
Round 1, and he won Round 2."
Howard Cosell >
"It's because of his left-handed stance Joe."
Joe Louis >
"No, not really Howard. Mildenberger is not fighting like a true southpaw. He's squared up
Howard, so he's really fighting in-between left-handed and right-handed."
Howard Cosell >
"But he's leading with right-jabs, just like a southpaw."
Joe Louis >
"He is not afraid, and is willing to trade. I'm impressed. He's landed a few good punches into
Clay's face. But, he has no power at all. He's pushing his punches, but they're getting there."
Howard Cosell >
"But he's {Mildenberger} wide open for the right-hand, and he has been caught by a few."
Joe Louis >
"He's doing right by himself, as he is winning the Round in my view."

What We Have Here
Is a very ordinary southpaw German Heavyweight out-boxing the so-called 'Greatest'.
Karl did have fast-hands, but had absolutely 'Zero' power in his fists.
And he was backing up Cassius in the majority of each session.
Jack Dempsey >
"Ohhh, would I have loved to get that Clay in the Ring. He is no Gene Tunney, not by a
long shot."
"He drops his hands, and has no real strength."

@Master...
What you mean? Bill has some reservations about my old mate Ali? I knew there was something alright about him! ;)
But no more wishing harm/death upon the guy Bill if that's what happened before... That shit ain't cool, he was still a great of the sport.
I will only trash his boxing performance LOL

Re: Karl Mildenberger ~ 'I Had The Formula To Beat Cassius Clay'
In This Bout
Cassius Clay displayed lightning-fast movement.
But the guy just couldn't punch, and he missed with 80% of his punches.
Karl Mildenberger was only 194 lbs., and was a face-forward moving fighter
with absolutely no punch.
Still, the German Challenger was giving the Champion 'fits'.

~ Comments After Round 8 ~
Howard Cosell >
"The Champion has yet to prove that he can punch. He's hit Mildenbeger with his
best left-hook, and he only had him down for 2-Seconds."
"And Cassius caught a groggy Mildenberger coming forward with a another big left-hook
on the other side of the Ring, and he couldn't drop him."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe Louis >
"Clay is fast and cat-quick like a Jaquar, but his punches can't squash a Tomato. He best
start doing some wood-chopping after this bout."
"MIldenberger is walking straight in, and he does not have a great chin. And still, Clay
can't stop him."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Max Schmeling >
"Mildenberger is putting up a much better fight than expected. But that's because the Champion
can't punch."
"Oh, Joe Louis is much better than this guy. Clay can't punch."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ingemar Johansson >
"Mildenberger is horrible, and he's staying even with Clay. If it wasn't for the '2 Knockdowns,
he'd be winning."
"Mildenberger does very well, right up until the last 20-Seconds of the Round. That's when the
Champion turns it on. You would think Mildenberger would learn and just box over the last
20-seconds instead of attacking with his hands down."

~ Comments During Round 9 ~
Howard Cosell >
"Joe, Cassius really pummeled the Challenger at the end of Round 8. Why isn't he
finishing Mildenberger off."
Joe Louis >
{Laughing}. Because he doesn't have the killer instinct Howard. He can't get this guy
out of here. He's letting him hang around too long."
Howard Cosell >
"The Champ has yet to prove that he has a punch. Angelo told me after Round 5 that
Cassius would put him away in the 6th, and he couldn't."
Joe Louis >
"I would be worried if this guy had a chin, but Mildenberger doesn't. That is why I'm
still not convinced on Clay. He's fast, but he's missing with most of his punches. And this
guy walks straight in asking to be hit. It's kind of embarrassing."
Howard Cosell >
"Well, is the Champion weak Joe."
Joe Loius >
"Well, he ain't strong."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ Comments After Round 9 ~
Howard Cosell >
"How do you have it scored Joe. I have Cassius well ahead. With the '2' Knockdowns,
he's up by 5-Points on my Card."
Joe Louis >
"It's close Howard. Mildenberger won the last Round, and he's still annoying Clay with
those bird-pecking right-hands."
Howard Cosell >
"Are you saying you have the bout 'all even' Joe."
Joe Louis >
"I said it was close. I have Clay up by 1-Point."

Round 10 ...... Cassius Clay
-
Re: Karl Mildenberger ~ 'I Had The Formula To Beat Cassius Clay'
~ Round 10 ~
Without a doubt, the 'Round of the Year' in the Heavyweight Division.
The Challenger dominated nearly the entire Round, as Karl Mildenberger was
chasing Cassius Clay out of the Waldstadion Stadium.
Mildenberger was pressuring the Champion while hitting him with everything he threw.
The Challenger was wildy-aggressive and had the Waldstadion fans in a frenzy by
the 2:10 Mark.
But Mildenberger was coming straight in and wide-open, and walked into a 'lucky'
right-left to the chin at the {2:20 Mark} as he had backed the Champion up near
the left-side Ropes.
Mildenberger fell face-first into the front-left Corner, but despite being 'shaken', he
went right back after the Champion with right-hands.
The Champion fired back, but was missing with everything, despite the Challenger
walking straight in. The Champion looked arm-weary as he fired away.
Then Mildenberger moved the Champion to Center-Ring with pawing right-hands,
but he was leaving himself wide-open for a counter straight right-hand.
Then it happened, at the {2:51 Mark}, the Champion 'closed-his-eyes' and threw a
straight right-hand down 'Broadway' as the Challenger was walking in.
The punch landed on the 'point' of Mildenberger's chin.
Karl went down on his back, and did a reverse-roll and ended up near the front-left
Ropes.
He struggled up at the '5-Count' and was ready to go after the Referee - Teddy Waltham
completed the 'Mandatory 8-Count' as the 'Bell' sounded ending Round 10.

;) Oh well, at least it was used as a good training session for Ali, he got to build some rounds without any danger to himself was a good move to use it like a sparring session and do round building once he realized there was no real threat.:)

'Milde'
Was a decent boxer with fairly good hand-speed. Though he was a southpaw, he positioned
himself with a 'squared up stance' and was open for straight right-hand leads.
'Milde' had a flicking quick right-jab, but he had no power at all.
As for size, 'Milde' stood at 6' 1 1/2" and had a 74" Reach, and weighed only 194 lbs.
He was not a big Heavyweight, and was not overly strong or physical.
Defensively, he was below-average, despite having a good bob-and-weave style.

'Milde'
Was a decent boxer with fairly good hand-speed. Though he was a southpaw, he positioned
himself with a 'squared up stance' and was open for straight right-hand leads.

Yeah perfect to build a few rounds up sparring for Ali. Why the 11 pages on it ? We going for the record of most pages on a non event? ;D

~ Comments after Round 11 ~
Howard Cosell >
"The Champion is going to have a lot of explaining to do after this fight. He has a
hurt fighter in front of him, and he cannot put him away. What do you think Joe."
Joe Louis >
"This Mildenberger is tough, but he's wide open for the straight right-hand. There
is no quit in him, and he can hardly see out if his left eye. But this man has a lot
of courage and determination. He wants to win, just not survive."
Howard Cosell >
"But he's had Mildenberger down '3' times in this fight Joe, and he cannot keep him
down. He looks completely frustrated."
Joe Louis >
"He can't punch Howard."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Max Schmeling >
"That's another Round for Karl. He's losing, but he's still in the fight. Clay is good, but
he has not impressed me all that much."
"If Karl had a punch, he may have ended this fight in that Round. I'm shocked. Is this
Clay easy to hit or what."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ingemar Johansson >
"This is funny. I would have ended this bout a long long time ago. Karl's chin is not that
strong. Clay can't break-an-egg."
"This is making me think about coming back."

Re: Karl Mildenberger ~ 'I Had The Formula To Beat Cassius Clay'
Racist US boxing writers came up with this against Joe Louis: America's white press began promoting Louis' image in the context of the era's racism; nicknames they created included the "Mahogany Mauler", "Chocolate Chopper", "Coffee-Colored KO King", "Safari Sandman", and one that stuck: "The Brown Bomber".

Re: Karl Mildenberger ~ 'I Had The Formula To Beat Cassius Clay'
Ali had a number of weaknesses as a fighter. He did not have an orthodox style and never learned the rudiments of classical boxing. Ali made many tactical errors in the ring. Ali did not know how to properly hold his hands, or how to duck (he pulled back or sidestepped), nor did he know how to parry or to block a jab!
Ken Norton’s trainer Eddie Futch said, (Anderson pg. 233), “The jab was a big reason Muhammad Ali never figured out why he had so much trouble with Ken Norton in their three fights.”
Joe Louis said of Ali in his autobiography (Louis p 260), “Ali’s a great fighter, (but) he made too many mistakes, his hands are down a lot, and he takes too many punches to the body. I know what I’m talking about.”

I think that was the point @Master..
That he would have been in deep water against Louis if he struggled so badly with featherfist cruiser Mildenberger.
I don't agree. I mean the best Joe Louis might have beaten the young 60's "PRIME" if you will Clay. But Louis could not have beaten the stronger 70's version no way.
Imo even the young Clay, up on his toes running around, would have done a paint job on stiff necked, concrete boots Louis.
