I have never been a big fan of Hopkins, but you have to give credit where credit is due, the guy just keeps cruising along picking up a belt here and a belt there, making this and that guys life miserable, never getting old, never paying the piper just like a cartoon character or a superhero.
What I want to know is where is the Hopkins who lost twice to Jermain Taylor? What happened to that Hopkins?
Almost forgot, excellent fight from Hopkins. He took control and the belt.

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
I've just woken up and haven't watched the fight but i'd just like to say, i've never been that impressed with Tavoris Cloud. I've said numerous times he just reminds me of another Jeff Lacy, but credit to B-Hop obvisiously.
But Tavoris Cloud has always been pretty lazy offensively, and pretty one dimensional i mean an old Glen Johnson basically fought on even terms with him. I think this was a perfect stylistic match up for B-Hop and it was chosen very wisely, even at his age now he knew he'd be able to school Cloud.

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
Hopkins did it again !
Surprisingly, there was no early onslaught or rush from Cloud as I feared there would be. He showed a lil too much respect and paid with right uppercuts and left hooks when he didn't.
I think Hopkins has a very realistic chance of defending or winning a world title at age 50. That's the magic number and his ultimate goal.

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
CLOUD was exposed...again!!! I'll tell you what, it really got under my skin that Campillo got robbed against cloud. Karma is a MF!!!!
and B-Hop??? man, what a warrior & boxing legend!!! I've not always liked his style, but u gotta admit. the guy is a crafty MF!!! I knew he'd beat cloud. There wasnt no doubt at all.

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
Hopkins is a legend. I'm glad it wasn't close and he closed the show, last thing we want is another controversy. Cloud isn't special at all. Hopkins exposes another one.
You guys think he'll fight Cleverly next?
-
Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
Hopkins has to be acknowledged as a top 5 p4p of all time.
-
Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
You lot NO I have NO love for Hopkins, but well done but I still think he's a twat.;D
-
I watched the fight last night, B hop did what he needed to do and I'm happy that he won. Who's next for B hop now? How would he shape up against Cleverly?

Hes on another stratosphere. Clev needs to do something spectacular, and in the States really.
On the rewatch. 48 yrs old....damn. Can we officially rename this :teacher: the Hopkins ? ;D

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
He's entitled to an optional defense in 90 days I think but he could take a mandatory instead or go for a top dog. Its a perfect win to retire on but I think he's now looking at that 28 year mark set by Archie Moore.
You gotta love the added bonus of kicking King square in the junk.

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
Hopkins won not because he's the better fighter. It's because Cloud is a punk ass bitch. Has this guy seen video of Hopkins before? They way you beat him is by keeping your fist in his face all night. Like Jones and Calzaghe did. Getting beat by a 48 year old man is embarrassing.

Hopkins beat him because he is technically a much better fighter. "Styles make fights" is a phrase perhaps over used at times but not in this case. It was the same kind of blue print Hopkins used to beat both Tito and Pavlik. It was a tutorial.

Yeah it's just that easy... just keep your fist in his face...

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
At 48 years old that was impressive. However for Cloud, styles or not, he should have been able to beat Hopkins with activity and movement to tire the old lion. Cloud's camp failed him.
-
Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
Ouch, Paulie served him up nice.

No offense but that does not make any sense. You cant simply discount the very thing that won the fight and then make the case for what Cloud could have done but didn't because of that style.
-
Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
Paulie full of if it, he took 350,000 for Cano, now you are telling me Golden Boy, Haymon and HBO can't get Paulie more than that for a Thurman fight.

Hopkins would get his first knockout in almost a decade.

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
Thurman's fight was an eliminator for Bradley's trinket
What happens here? Do GBP & Top Rank work together? Or does Bradley vacate?
Lets hope they work together to make this fight happen

He will vacate, Thurman means a lot to many powerful people and Arum still knows Bradley is worth money against Manny, Rios or JMM.

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
Hopkins says he's going to retire before he's 50 and that he wants to fight Cleverly. He'll win too even if it's in Britain. Paulie was funny at the presser with the Everlast comment, haven't heard that one for years. Bradley won't vacate but I'm not sure the WBO even order a purse bid for a Bradley-Thurman fight

Thurman would batter Bradley.

I think Breadly beats Thurman quite easily. Don't see it happening any time soon though.

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
I am not a fan Of Hopkins but congratulations he did his homework and used his experience to beat Cloud. Imust saqy this that I thought Cloud was better than this but I hold judgment because I only saw him once before and it was a lackluster fight so I said anyone could have an off night. Maybe! If I were Cloud I would do some soul searching and go back to the drawing board. He let B Hop psyche him out.

Meh cloud is what he is, campillo did the same thing against him except he wasn't a name so he got shafted by the judges.

I would love to see Hopkins vs Froch when all the smoke clears.

*it's a nice win at his age... that's it. ATG, sure... but let's not get ridiculous.
Hop beat alot of ok fighters at middleweight.. nothing special... he fought DeLaHoya and Trinidad ,who at best, are welterweights... when faced with a true middleweight in Jermain Taylor, he lost twice...
u'd have more of a argument if he had beat Calzaghi... Dawson... but even then,#5! ... u meant #25.
p.s... Hopkins is probably top #5 dirtiest fighters in history...ALL TIME.

Fought Roy Jones to start his real march on the middleweight division in 93 getting close to age 30 and won more rounds off him then anyone did before or after while in his prime.
He then wins the IBF tin in 1995 at age 30.
He goes on to defend his title 7 times in two years and then 5 more times prior to the beginning of the King sponsored middleweight tourney.
At age 35 he enters the tourney, cleans Keith Holmes clock and unifies with the WBC in the process.
Next while nearing 36 he takes on a guy (Tito) that it is said he has no chance against and completely shuts him down further unifying grabbing the WBA strap.
He defends his titles 4 more times and then at age 40 he unifies once again against Oscar and becomes the first unified/undisputed middleweight champion since Hagler. Sure it should have been Sturm but he stopped Oscar who was never stopped.
At age 41 he then defends his undisputed mid crown against Hbo’s poster child in Taylor back to back in 5 months and getting the short end of the stick in both. I have always thought that if Taylor did enough in the second fight then Bernard did enough in the first to retain.
At this point, it’s already a hall of fame career on the first ballet.
But no not for this competitor.
At 42, he jumps up two divisions and destroys the man who beat the man and makes it look rather pedestrian in the process.
Fights an ugly fight with Winky at 43 and then goes 12 with Calzaghe at 44 losing an sd regardless of how we individuals scored it.
Next he drops down in weight and fights the new middleweight destroyer of worlds in Pavlik and goes about to put on one of the best boxing clinics that I have ever seen.
He has a couple of meaningless fights at 45 and 46 thereabouts and then fights Pascal twice in 6 months scoring a draw and a win.
He loses to Dawson fighting him twice in 6 months at age 47 and then at 48 goes on to embarrass Cloud.
Given his age etc etc can you think of another save Moore that has even came close to these achievements? I don’t do p4p lists but for beanflicker to list him on his top 5 is not some giant leap of faith. Its both valid and relevant.

Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
Hopkins is a great fighter - maybe even a living legend (he's old enough), but top 5 talk is crazy. I mean, you can give him a glowing report but the same can be done for dozens of other fighters.

What he has done is unprecedented as well as the manner in which he accomplished it. Love him or hate him, dirty/tricky fighter or not. Personally I cant stand him but I certainly respect him for what he has accomplished. Historians of all walks of life will be taking a serious look at their atg top 10 lists if they are objective in the least.
-
Re: Tavoris Cloud vs. Bernard Hopkins - Saturday night chat/fight thread
*I respect him... BUT becuz he's still fighting and beating b level fighters doesn't give him a top 10... Hop lost to every major fighter he fought that wasn't smaller than him... sure he beat DLH and Tito... at middle... lost to Cal, Jones, Dawson, Taylor twice... not very impressive if ur top 10
... personally, i think Marquez and Pac are more impressive in the all time great list... and Marquez is still fighting at the highest level.
...Mayweather..like him or not, he'll rank higher than Hop.
...Andre Ward will prob end up higher than Hop as well when it's all over.
all im saying is Hop is not a top 10...

Fine but top 5? Really?!
