Re: After watching a prime Roy Jones on TV last night he was far from unbeatable.
I see the fight as Benn getting starched out early. Jones would have timed him and pummeled him out.

I agree 100%...
Out of curiosity...I would like the detractors to name guys that they feel would have beaten Roy at 168...His true prime...
Not given a good fight but beat him......
Every fighter is beatable no matter who they are....Just have not seen the man able to do it..
I'll bite :-X.Simply put,I think Nigel Benn had a realistic chance of defeating Jones. Can I say he "would" have beaten him,No.But in fairness I equally can not say Jones "would" have beaten Benn. After what Benn prevailed through in that tragic but stunning McClellan battle,I was hard pressed to make Jones a lock for a win and if their was a fight to be made, that was the ONE.McClellan was a huge favorite, many picked him to steamroll Benn.....for a moment lets put aside all of the excuses,Rabbit punching,Long count, etc.I am always hesitant to trump that fight up,talk fondly of the win.You just can not,It was a horrible ending, but the fight did happen, and Benn emerged the victor.
On paper,It appeared a whitewash for Roy.He was faster, deeper in pedigree, emence balance and instinct, really exploited a mans mistakes in embarrassing fashion. If we are talking strictly 168 as mentioned,he faced some guys in Thorton,Pazienza,Brannon etc. who brought forward pressure but NEVER the unbridled two fisted threat and intensity of Benn in that division.Benn could make it rough in there in a way Jones never had to deal with and would keep jones guessing. And I do think that as hard as Jones was to catch clean...I feel that Benn had the arsenal/power to hurt Jones badly.Call it the proverbial "punchers chance" but I think it was more than that & I honestly think Benn had an honest shot, I don't think Jones would be able to get in Benns head ,Ok commence laughter,Im done.
After the Gerald McClellan fight Nigel Benn was a finished fighter, mentally and physically. Im glad he didn't meet RJJ at that time, he would of been beaten in embarrassing fashion.

What ?
Re: After watching a prime Roy Jones on TV last night he was far from unbeatable.
Even in his prime, people are forgetting that Benn could hit McClellan. Things change when you can't hit the guy, Roy was extremely hard to hit off the ropes, he was nearly impossible to hit in the middle of the ring. If much faster more accurate guys like Bernard Hopkins and James Toney couldn't hit Jones why would Benn be able to? And he doesn't have that great of a chin, and Roy was one of the best punchers we've seen at 168. Of course I think Benn couldn't hurt Jones, but I don't believe he could badly hurt Jones wtih any one punch, because he would never catch Jones cleanly.

EXACTLY!
So why did Roy avoid an easy big money fight?
The fear of been KO'ed is all I an think of.
Re: After watching a prime Roy Jones on TV last night he was far from unbeatable.
To be fair they did show him against Toney and Hopkins. Not the greatest fighters to look good against.
He might have been beatable....but not by Benn, Eubank, Collins or Calzaghe. Which leads tot he question - who would have beaten him?

In an odd way,That McClellan fight affected Roy mind set as well. Its ALL speculation and "what ifs" but I say Benn had an excellent chance.......And right now I'm sober :fight:

You have Ricardo Lopez, Pernell Whitaker and Azuma Nelson, who I can think of that were at least on the same level.
I cant vouch much further than that as I only really got in to boxing around the mid Nineties.
Also, Joe would have given each of these fighters a tough fight, if they were the same size.
Didn't roy win fighter of the decade? The only one you mentioned that was close is Sweet pea and he didn't dominate like roy did. The 90's were all jones.

No fighter is unbeatable.
Re: After watching a prime Roy Jones on TV last night he was far from unbeatable.
Nobody's unbeatable, even the best has his bad day at the office from time to time and in boxing, nobody's protected from THE punch that makes all the difference. Jones wasn't unbeatable, sure, but talent wise, he was the best rounded fighter of his generation and was in a totally other class where no other fighter belongs.

I think people only remember his good points and forget the bad.
If he had fought Nigel Benn it would have been a great fight.Jones would be favorate but Benn would be in with a shot.
Also,Calzaghe would have given jones lot of problems IMO.
RJJ imo in his prime beats Benn and Calzaghe handily.

don't forget to mention Chavez, Holyfield (who IMO accomplished just as much and took on more big names),

You could make an arguement MAYBE for Pernell Whitaker, but none of the others apply, also Whitaker tailed off at the end of the 90's, and even in his prime he did not dominate like Roy
They both had similar ability to not get hit, only Roy was much better offensively, much faster, better at throwing combinations, better and countering. I won't disrespect Whitaker's name because he was a legit fighter as are the other guys you mentioned
but how long did Ricardo Lopez remain the top 1 or 2 fighters on the p4p list? Or Azumah Nelson? When Pernell was at his peak is when Roy stole it away from him when he beat Toney so emphatically, he got it "stolen" away by Mosley and Trinidad, but that was just politics. Pernell is a great fighter, but he wasn't on Roy's level.
Either was Azumah Nelson, especially not in the 90's where he went 1-1-2 with Jesse James Leija, had Genaro Hernandez beat him, and he went 1-1-1 with Fenech(which is respectable), but Nelson isn't considered on the same level as Roy JOnes p4p all time. He was really good, but not that good.
Like Isaid originally Whitaker was the only guy you could really compare to Roy Jones Jr in the 90's or even in the 2000's nobody has been like Roy was in the 90's.
how long did Jones dominate a division and take on all comers? and even avenge the only blemish on his record even after his skills and speed were visibly declining, to retire undefeated
umm yea Nelson in the 90's had already been a pro for at least 11 yrs and had fought the legendary Salvador Sanchez (and although beaten it was a close fight), Wilfredo Gomez, Marcos Villasana (had taken on Fenech, Zuniga, and Cepeda), than in the 90's Nelson took on Whitaker (in a competitive fight), LaPorte, Fenech (twice, a draw and a TKO win), Gabriel Ruelas (twice MD and TKO), Leija (4 times, a draw, UD loss, a TKO win, and last a UD loss), and Genaro Hernandez (sd loss), since when does Jones have that many big names on his record?
