One month out and Martinez is 176 pounds....meanwhile Williams is at 162
Just saw this over at Fightnews...
Boxing - Martinez, Williams pre weigh-in
Martinez seems to be really heavy considering that the fight is 30 days away. Let's not forget that the fight is at 157, so that's nearly 20 pounds to work off. I had never really thought of Martinez as a 'bloater'. It makes you wonder how heavy was he when he started camp?
In contrast Williams is right on cue and seems to be very relaxed about everything. It wouldn't surprise me if he could actually scrape down to WW if need be.
I think Williams takes the win in this one.
Re: One month out and Martinez is 176 pounds....meanwhile Williams is at 162
What does Martinez rehydrate to on fight nights? 19 pounds is a lot but if this is how he always does things then so be it, different people's bodies work in different ways but he is a fairly old aged fighter even with such fresh legs but he could ware them out quickly if this is what he does everytime. Who knows though. Williams getting to 147 isn't the stretch I think everyone believes it is, he did it with supposedly no problems in the past and it doesn't look like he's put a whole lot of mass on.
Re: One month out and Martinez is 176 pounds....meanwhile Williams is at 162
If it's his normal routine then fair enough, but I realy had no idea that he was a 'bloater'. I had always regarded him as fair sized JMW who became a smallish MW. Perhaps I was wrong in that assumption. Most fighters boil down to some degree, but I had never pictured Martinez as one of those types. We've never really seen him walking around looking like Hatton or Duran.
Totally agree about Williams. He's tall, but seems to be blessed with a frame that simply doesn't need all that much meat on it. You really sense that if a money fight at 147 came about then he could make it. Doing what he's doing now is comfortable for him and he's probably able to enjoy 3 square meals, making WW would simply mean having to work harder than what he's doing now.

Martinez last fought at Middleweight and i think Williams knew that Sergio was heavy.
Why nobody is shooting Williams for asking 157?

Agreed, it is is bullshit. I see no need for the catchweight either. Either have it at MW or JMW, take away the CW nonsense.

Because he's not 1 of the 2 faces that is carrying boxing.;)
Re: One month out and Martinez is 176 pounds....meanwhile Williams is at 162
Well Martinez has only had 1 real fight at Middleweight and if I remember, they bot came in just a few pounds north of the contract on fight night. These two guys are not intimidated by each other in size. It's 100% a scrap. These two guys like to unfoil game plans, and I think it's hard to imagine this fight even reaching a lull.
I think both of the guys were ok with 157, if they think this is leveling the playing field good for them, but I just don't see how you can blame either of them for a catchweight. This is neither of their natural weights. Maybe Maravilla is blowing up a little more between fights? If anything it is to Williams advantage.
FURTHERMORE these guys are both gentlemen in and out of the ring. Don't ever compare these two to the scumbags in boxing that spend far more time complaining about circumstance than actually taking a stance.
Maravilla will have no trouble weighing in he's not even 6'0" tall
Re: One month out and Martinez is 176 pounds....meanwhile Williams is at 162
20 pounds is a lot but far from impossible. Yes sergio didn't look like a bloater to me neither but hopefully this is his normal routine. I do think having a catchweight of 157 is bullshit, I mean williams fight against winky was at 168 if I remember right, so what the hell?
Re: One month out and Martinez is 176 pounds....meanwhile Williams is at 162
I have to say this is concerning to me. 4 weeks, 5 pounds a week that's doable, but in a malnourished way, it's not like he has a lot of fat to lose. What do I know though, I'm not in his camp.

Unlikely, but could be
Martinez has never struggled with weight. In the Williams Martinez fight he rehydrated about 6lbs and in the Pavlik fight it was even less.
I can lose 12 lbs of water weight in a day, and I weight 145. A professional athlete and I had to lose 20lbs in 4 weeks, that makes it come down to about 2lbs a week, which is a lot more doable.
Martinez is not like Mayweather. A fighter who lures a Featherweight to "catchweight Welter" and bends the scales while laughing it off. I mean that was about the lowest you can go in my book. He's no better than Joan Guzman.
Martinez has character, and he shows up to work with his gloves because they make him wear them. They still gotta remind Mayweather to take his wife-beater (for you brits this is a style of shirt for us cookie americans. just watch the jersey shore. That's all the guys wear) off I guess when goes anywhere....
I am shocked more people are not excited about this fight. This is my second fight I am going to this year. Last was Martinez-Pavlik. He won a lot of fans that night. He's my favorite champ right now. Who will he NOT fight??? Tell you this much. He'd beat mayweather's ass to a pulp.

I'll be there too. And this is the #4 v. #5 p4p fighters going at it. And they are entertaining to watch. And their first fight was a fight of the year contender. And Zsolt Erdei is on the card in his first stateside fight. And rumor has it that Guerrero could appear on the card as well.
Let's assume Martinez healthily drops 10 pounds to 166 in the next week, can you drop 10 pounds in water weight on the day of? Also, does anyone have evidence that Sergio has done this in the past and that this is normal?

That thought certainly had crossed my mind when reading about this earlier. Who knows. I have a feeling that Williams is gonna make a run at WW after this and maybe thats why he wanted to keep that extra little bit of weight off. Plus, I'm willing to bet that Martinez has more pop than Williams does at 160.
Re: One month out and Martinez is 176 pounds....meanwhile Williams is at 162
Martinez is one of my favourite fighters at the minute, so I'm really looking forward to this rematch, particularly after their first fight. It seems risky leaving so much weight to take off in so little time, although if he regularly does this there shouldn't be too much of a problem. It would be interesting to see how often he does do this though, it does seem like an awful lot to take off
