Mark Breland v Aaron Davis
Watched some ESPN classic fights and Mark Breland v Aaron Davis was an exciting fight. both were from New York but the fight was in Reno. Breland had won the vacant WBA World Welterweight Championship. He lost it in his first defense to Marlon Starling. In 1989, Breland again won the vacant WBA Welterweight Title. He made three successful title defenses before losing it to Aaron Davis in a thrilling 9-round contest.
Breland was rocked with a jab in the 1st round but had Davis eye swollen. Breland was knocked down in the 4th with a left hook but was generally winning the fight. The ref nearly called off twice because of injuries to Davis' eye before Breland was knocked out in round 9 with a huge right hand.
What are peoples memories of that fight?
Re: Mark Breland v Aaron Davis
It was a good fight, and I too saw it on ESPN classic a few years ago.
Aaron Davis was an underrated fighter, who didn't fight frequently enough.
He certainly had enough power to hurt Breland and ultimately KO him.
He also beat up Vinny Paz later in their careers, totally outclassed Paz at 168.
Re: Mark Breland v Aaron Davis
I did not realise he beat Vinny Paz, Davis was a bit like Barclay with a big left hook. Did he have a lazy eye? He really laid it all on the line for his title fight unlike Zab Judah and Ortiz in their recent fights.

I don't know if he had a lazy eye. Now that you mention it though his eyes and face did kind of remind me of David Reid. So maybe so lol
And yes look up his fight on youtube or something with Vinny Paz.
He absolutely schooled Paz and frustrated the shit out of him, ended up TKO'n him on cuts.
Re: Mark Breland v Aaron Davis
You know those fights that you see live and it hits you..."this sport is for me, I'm hooked". This battle for neighborhood bragging rights was just that. Gone are the days where you can see this within hours of another barn burner in Paez vs Dorsey 2 on 'free' TV and know you've seen a special contest.
I thought for sure Davis was going to stop him early on, he had him shaky often and early but Breland got that pole working and hung a while. Davis was ho-hum and what you see is what you get but had some all out brawls in Lopez, Marshall, Rupa, Brown along the way. Always liked him as a fighter.

You are like me want boxing back on free to air TV so that millions of new fans can be created by watching these fighters lay it all on the line.
Re: Mark Breland v Aaron Davis
Breland is a trainer now, wonder what Davis is doing?

I c what u mean by comparing Davis with Barkley , but ,
P4P , Davis actually had a much better chin than Barkley , whom was KDd by Duran and KOd by Benn & Sims , then stopped by Toney .
In Barkley's defense , it must b said that he was really drained in most if not all of those fights .
Meldrick Taylor hit Davis low quite often when he got the decision over him for the WBA title , not a convincing performance at all , warranted an immediate rematch that never happened .
Davis is underrated by almost every 1 , and forgotten by most .
Starling , Brown , Quartey and Jose Luis Lopez were very good as well and underrated as well .

There was nothing controversial about Meldrick Taylor vs Aaron Davis, it was a good performance from Meldrick Taylor and he beat Aaron Davis clearly.

I think that Taylor's excessive use of low blows r worse than just controversial .
Re: Mark Breland v Aaron Davis
Breland was a damn good fighter with a glass jaw. Davis just caught him with a bomb.

I don't recall much about that fight Master, I just recall that Breland was a bit of a disappointment as a Pro, after being a Gold Medalist for the U.S. at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Aaron Davis had a lot of potential, but never really lived up to it at the championship level, his main claim to fame was the knockout of Breland.

Davis was the more absorbent sponge. Those guys beat the hell out of each other through out.

Remember Breland coming over here and finishing Lloyd Honeghan in impressive fashion.

Yeah, that was one of Breland's best performances. Like I said, Breland was suppose to be the next big thing as a Pro, another Gold Medal winner at the Olympics. He had a bit of success at the Championship level, but then got KO'd a few times, never lived up to his potential, and faded into oblivion. I always thought Breland was an overachiever.
