Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
Was reading in Sun today that Pete Buckley is finally to retire. His final record 31-249-11. He hasn't won in five years though its worth pointing out he was only ever stopped 10 times.
A legendary journeyman he has saved promoter's asses many times when he steps in at late notice for injured fighters.
He has shared the ring with people like Hamed, Freitas, Rees, Scott Harrison etc..
Have a good retirement mate - you deserve it ;)
Here's his record
Peter Buckley

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
He chose to go the route of quick opponent. He may have been on to something. As you can tell by his record, he never had a hard time landing a fight.
I bet he made some decent money over the years also.

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
Have a good one Peter god bless. :)

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
The last few years of Peter isnt what its about Tedious is how I saw it. I remember him starting a good Fighter who at his best was a handfull for anybody, thats a fact. He boxed a few of my lads and you coulnt take the piss. Ive known Peter a long time through the curciut, a great lad. He owes Boxing nothing, Boxing owes Peter good luck for the future thanks for the memories.

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
Buckley is a guy that many view fondly.
However I'm sorry I've got to nitpick.
Many recall he shared a ring with Hamed, Harrisson, Freitas and Rees.
He didn't fight those fighters without gaining some expierience.
His mentality was not to learn however, it was to make money.

I don't know much about him but I imagine family pressures and needing to have a regular income meant he needed to fight every few weeks in order to provide for his family.
Not everyone can be an contender. He's probably still had a great career really, I mean he'll be able to tell his grandkids he shared the ring with some of Britain's finest fighters of his generation.
True he may have lost them all but at least he was in there. The best most of us will be able to say is that we shook a fighters hand when we went to a boxing match ;)

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
In your post Bilbo you seem resigned to that fact.
As Buckley was resigned to the fact that he would never become anyone great. He accepted that.
I believe a true fighter would never surrender their ambition.
I realise that to him it's just a living. With that amount of losses it's clear he doesn't really care about fighting all that much

I don't know, maybe he just didn't get the chance. :-\
You obviously know better than me how the system works but I expect that the best he could have realisitically hoped for was modest domestic honours, maybe a British title shot.
Given that that was his limit he probably felt he could make more money fighting regularly for a paycheck rather than fight every 3 or 4 months and have a 30 or 40 fight career.
You're career is just about to take off and you're full of hope and optimism.
Maybe if you lose 3 in a row and realise you'll never be a star but you still love boxing then maybe you'd do the same?
But what am I saying, your Irish all you have to do is turn pro and you'll sell out in Dublin! ;D

I completely understand where you're coming from mate believe me.
I can also identify, who knows I could end up in the same situation soon enough:-\ I just feel in the interests of his own health, there are easier ways.

Tell that to the stable of Nobby Nobbs fighters.;D
PB and others like it are the meat of the fight game and it's very a practical way to be. I'm sure most people enter the game with the idea that they can be world class. Most soon realise they aren't and will never be. You have 2 choices.
Walk away from boxing or resign yourself to the fact that you can make regular money in a sport you love. Think of all the might have been, sky sports is full of them  plenty get built up as the next big thing only to be found wanting and most quit. Fighters like PB will probably earn more over their career than those who quit because they'll never be world class.

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
As I said, I can truely recognise that, but it doesn't take much to be succesful at a domestic level.

Yeah but it's easy for you to say that you live in Ireland ;D
-
Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
The Irish domestic scene lives off the English.
Fightrs mingle a lot.
Often it is a win against a British opponent that will move you up the rankings in Ireland.
As for me personally, will I find it easy? No.
I'm either going to America to train or not at all. Domestic level training and competition is not enough.

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
Without journeymen you wouldn't get "star" fighters.
Everyone has to learn.
And it doesn't matter how hard you try or how hard you believe YOU WILL achieve something - if you're shit you're shit. And there's fuck all you can do about it.

haha that should be the disclaimer in every Tony Robbins book!

Dunno man.
If you travel to a top class gym, get the trainers to help you, live the life and show interest, I think you can transform yourself.
Look at Mickey Rourke...
Of course selective match making, good management and promotion help also.

Gavin Rees, Carlos Maussa, Carlos Baldomir and John Ruiz are all proof that talent isn't everything but that sheer luck and persistance can pay off.

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
You can't compare "world" champions with journeymen
There is a level of shittiness.
Tony Robbins? Conman.
-
Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
Thats true.
Persistance and mental fortitude are evrything in boxing.
They're what made JCC great

yes that will go a long way but you can't tell me that with all of the above you could turn Nicky Cook in to a Barrera/Morales/Marquez/Pacquiao? I really don't see that happening.

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
I do, it's how they're raised in the sport in my opinion.

Nice little nature/nurture debate going on here.
My own opinion is that nature accounts for maybe 25% of a boxers talent, nurture another 25% but that at least 50% comes from the scientifically unmeasurable quality known as individual human will.

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
Bilbo I think we're onto the same train of thought here.
A fighters mentality plays a dramatic part in his development.
A fighter needs to be balanced and centred.
I believe Marco Antonio Barrera was a good example.
Not a great natural athlete. But one knew he would become a success due to his sheer will and determination.

When ever some guy commits a crime or screams about life being unfair and too difficult to make an honest living they should show them a picture of Buckley and his carrer...No harder way to put food on the table then the way he did it...Made an honest living and has nothing to be ashamed of...IMO he was damn tough....10 KO's losses in almost 300 fights...

Um, used to play football, runs marathons in his spare time. I'd call that athletic.

Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
I have no idea of the ratio but it is no doubt a combination of nature/nurture. I just think young Donny is seeing it from his own POV, nothing wrong with that ambition.;)

Just looking at the natural ability thing!!!!
Andy Lee; 3 National Titles
John Duddy; 1 National Title
Paul McCloskey; 3 National TITLES
Barry McGuigan; 2 or 3 National Titles
Hitman Donny; 3 National Titles at 20.
I like my odds.

Spend as much time in the amateurs as possible without being kicked out due to olld age...I have faith in you Donny once you turn pro...Even though I never seen you fight...You seem determined...and a top notch guy
Just try to get at least 100 amateur bouts under you before even debating the pro ranks.....Even more if possible no matter how well you do...I want to write about you in the future as a champion and not a could have been;)
-
Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
Thanks very much Daxx....
I'm attempting that as we speak really.
I think I'm spending a year and a half more in the ams...and with the help of God that should mean 20-30 more fights, so I'll hopefully gain plenty.

I honestly reckon Donny will be huge in the pro ranks. He's a good looking Irish boy and he only needs to be half way decent for him to establish a huge following.
You just need to think up a catchphrase Donny. Dunne has his 'hunkey dorey!' you need something similar and then you're in.
Win your first 5 pro fights and by 2010 you'll be selling out Madison Square Garden
-
Re: Pete Buckley to retire - hats off to an unsung ring hero
Thanks guys, your support means a lot.
I just want to compete in the pros. Every fight in the pros will be an extension of my dream coming true.
And I can guarantee you guys one thing, when I do get in the ring you'll see some exciting fights.
If I win I'll win well, but if I'm to be beaten Im gonna end up like Gatti!
