Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I honestly couldn't watch it all, it was like i was watching a glorifed sparring session. And a dancing show all at once, first off RJJ's performance uhh where the hell was it ?
He would just throw single punches all the time, and just allow Joe Calzaghe too hold his hands down when he is 2 inches away from him. I was screaming at the screen just bloody hit him RJJ for goodness sake.
Joe Calzaghe was so wide open i can't believe RJJ didn't take those openings, and secondly all of Joe Calzaghes taunting was just ridiculous. It was like watching a clown in the ring, he done it in every round and in every minute of the round.
And the action was like a sparring session, RJJ would hit Joe Calzaghe with single punches every now and again. And then Joe Calzaghe would come wadding in landing mostly slapping punches to the body.
This may sound like sour grapes but im very disappointed, in both boxers. RJJ didn't even try to win the fight after the 1st round, and Joe Calzaghe's constant taunting dancing whatever you want to call it. Was just ridiculous to watch, this fight was not a good fight for boxing at all a disgrace IMO.

You sound dissapointed that Roy Jones wasn't the same Roy Jones of 7 years ago.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I have seen a lot worse.
The outcome was never in doubt, from the moment the contract was signed - not in my mind anyway.
The taunting was excessive but it was nice that somebody finally gave RJJ a taste of his own medicine, he has been making guys look slow and stupid for years - was nice to see somebody else do it to him.
He needs to retire, and should have retired after the first Tarver fight. His last 5 years have been terrible IMO.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
Just sit down, take a deep breath, and accept that SuperJoe beat Jones like a gong.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
im with icb on this one. its not about the age we are talking about here. its the instinct about fighting. jones was content of just dancing around with joe and was just not in fighting mode. i was screaming my lungs out to jones. how do you expect to win a fight by throwing 1 punch at a time and covering up the whole time. what a disgraceful showing by jones. i was so pissed during the interview when jones said thank you to his fans. the only thing i could think about hes saying thank you coz he got our ppv dollars in the bag.. what an asssssss...

I agree, it was a shit fight. By the way Calzaghe really showed how much of a slapper he is in this fight, that disgusted me actually. Good on ya calzaghe fans and joe calzaghe, i was wrong. But really if anything that was a poor performance.

Don't bother i know his kind i respect Joe Calzaghe as a fighter, and i think he has great skills. But it really was sad watching this fight, i think we the fans missed out big time. Certainly not what i would call a championship fight.

Well jones had a better showing than pavlik's performance, if you can take away anything good about that.

Was a great fight until the 6th. Then Roy was badly cut and beat up yet still fought. This goon said it was a sparring session?
Yes that comment is "Cock" worthy.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
The whole thing sucked, wasnt one good fight on the undercard. I had a big night last night so i nearly went to sleep in each undercard. Piss poor performances from judah, agustus, calzaghe and jones. I want my 50 bucks back. I was going for Jones but i would of been happy with a good fight but instead i watched two guys clown each other for 12 rounds, one slap constantly and one do nothing most of the time. Even if i wasnt going for anyone, even if i was a calzaghe fan id say this fight card sucked big time.

Now, without the childish insults, that's a somewhat justifiable position to have. I don't agree, I thought is was an ok fight initially, then I just found it depressing (no, I'm not a Jones fan, but Calzaghe was clearly beating up the shadow of what RJJ once was and his showboating was obnoxious and disrespectful).

Yes it was your telling me you would call that a championship fight ? one guy acting like a jackass throughout the fight, holding his hands down dancing and doing all other kinds of crap.
And the other fighter only throwing 3 punches every minute and just laying on the ropes, getting hit and not countering. And not even trying to win.
I've seen more heart/desire/action in sparring sessions at my gym, other than the first round RJJ was never really competitive in the fight, a sad fight indeed for the fans.
Even the ref was a clueless moron he never even looked at the cut, WTF was that all about ? infact i think the fight should of been stopped RJJ could of got a serious injury.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
Its not luck, Roy would go out and dominated anyone he was in against in his prime, he wouldn't let them compete with him. He would dishearten them in the first one or two rounds by either surviving their mindless wirlwind assault, or he would come forwad and hit them with anything he wanted, but he used to set up shots, it wasn't his speed that made him special, it was his ability to use a punch one moment to set something up the next. Every punch he landed or didn't land had a purpose in his prime. Now he was just potshotting like an ineffective Bernad Hopkins or Floyd Mayweather because he doesn't have their elusiveness of the ropes. I shouldn't even say that because he didn't get hit to the head that much, but where Floyd Mayweather and Bernad would have either fought off the ropes or clinched Calzaghe, Roy would just take the punches off his arms. I was mad also that he wasn't punching when Calzaghe dropped his hands, he legitimately threw punches while Joe had his hands down, but what made me the maddest was two things
1) When Roy backed up Calzaghe, who seemed to need breaks or something during the fight, He never threw a damn thing except that right cross, and it did land, but he made it so obvious what he was doing that Calzaghe could time it, instead of forcing Joe to react to his speed.
2) Roy almost never punched off the ropes, Calzaghe wasn't really able to hit him to the head with anything of any consequence when Jones was the ropes, yet he didn't throw his fucking punches. The few times he did he countered Calzaghe well with uppercuts.
Ali punched off the ropes, Robinson had the chin.

The only disgraceful thing I've seen tonight is your post. Give the man his due respect and stop being so lame already.
He beat him decisively and didn't allow him to get off and you picked wrong once again because your eye for boxing is obviously not as good as you think. Joe figured him out early ad never looked back just like he did with hopkins. Only difference is that hopkins cheated so much that we didn't get to see how good Joe Joe can look in dominating him.
And you want to talk about the showboating? You got some nerve. Roy was doing it against Tito and he tried against Joe until he noticed he was getting beat to the punch and had to cover up.
Near the end he was in survival mode. Give Joe his due respect. I hope you wake up with your senses in order tomorrow and stop this nonsense.

Coming from you i would except this kind of response, especially how much of a Joe Calzaghe fan boy you are. And how you disrespected Bernard Hopkins in your other thread. Where you got told by many members how much of a stupid post it was.
My eye for boxing not as good as i think ? who the hell are you some sort of god ? your little know it all and you think you know the lot but you actually don't know nowhere near as much as you think you do.
I think i know more boxing than you ever know, i've been following boxing for over 10 years im also an Amateur boxer. And i come from a good boxing family, and i've learnt many things. From my Grandad/Uncles ETC.
RJJ showboated in the past but not to the extent at what Joe Calzaghe was doing. Was just damn right ridiculous and disrespectful to a legend like RJJ, Joe Calzaghe done it for almost the entire fight in every round.
I give Joe Calzaghe no real credit for beating a fighter, who hasn't had a stoppage win since 2002. And has been a shot fighter for atleast 7 years. And if you read my other posts i said this before in Bilbo's thread.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
Hopkins made Calzaghe look silly, Calzaghe couldn't land a damn thing against him, and Hopkins still had the reflexes to counter Joe with left hooks and right hands.
Calzaghe is a great fighter, he gets credit for that, but he fought guys way past their prime then he is. I said from the begining out of the three big fights coming up (Cazlaghe-jones, Hopkins-Pavlik, De La Hoya- Pacquaio), this was the biggest mismatch if we all saw it how did Joe do anything anybody didn't expect?
Also Bx70Ny, if you knew half as much as you think you do you would see that Joe didn't need to figure anything out, ROy didn't do anything. He landed when he threw punches as often as Joe did, but he hardly threw anything, Joe had difficulty landing cleanly for a lot of it, and he didn't prove anything with this fight except that he is pretty fast.
In fact largely Joe's whole style I don't even feel is all that much boxing, my brother who doesn't know much about boxing thought it looked like point sparring, because thats how he punches. I give him all the credit in the world for getting away with it, when I can't see anybody else getting away with it, but if thats all you have then you are in trouble agaisnt Roy Jones Jr or Hopkins or Toney in their prime.
Markus is being a complete douche bag.

In a a rematch Calzaghe would destroy Hopkins AND YET you would still get tools like you saying "But he didnt fight Dawson"
Who moderates these boards?

You post crap all the time so you should be used to it, i have Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones career set. I've seen almost every single fighter of theres, and i never said Joe Calzaghe wasn't a great fighter with good variety of skill sets.
If you took your Joe Calzaghe fan boy glasses off for one moment, and actually read my post more carefully. You will realize im actually disappointed with both fighters not just Joe Calzaghe.

You know what? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because it's still the night of the fight and I can understand you're angry but, if you're still talking this reckless a few days from today then you are a true hater.
I'm not biased toward any fighter. I'm Puertorican so no one can say I'm all into my hometown guys. Joe is a special fighter that I truly appreciate getting a chance to see. This is a guy that makes the best adjustments in the business and he's come back from 2 first round Knockdowns to win convincingly unless you're a Roy or hopkins gan or just a Joe hater.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I knew that the chances of jones winning were slim but i went for him and picked him because im a loyal fan!! I picked from my heart and not my head? But does anyone want to tell me i was wrong about what is needed to beat calzaghe? He is so open for the right hand it aint funny. All he proved today was that Roy Jones is officially finished, without a doubt. But Calzaghes resume will look good, i think it should show that he caught three great middleweight fighters at the right time...bernard, eubank and roy. And two of them dropped him in the first round. Congrats, like i said. Calzaghe won, he was the better man but really tonight it wouldnt of taken much to do that.
Ive been hear long enough to say what i want and not give a shit about guys sad clicking me, neg repping me...i dont care. Im speaking the truth and if anyone doesnt like it then go ahead and neg rep me. I guarentee you that it doesnt ruin my night ;) :)

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
It was a decent fight.
Jones Jr. was in over his head though. Once Calzaghe made his adjustments there was little Jones could do.
My only qualm with the fight was Calzaghes showboating. There was too much of it. Stop posing and just throw your punches!! Thats what people like to see Calzaghe do, and to not do that and just go overboard with the posing was a bit irritating.
You can't help but feel there was too much respect from Joe in terms of not going all out to overwhelm Jones. He could have thrown a lot more. But at the same time all that showboating was itself disrespectful.
Like a cat pawing at a toy and doing a little jiggle each time it makes its pounce.

RJJ showboated in the past but to the extent at what Joe Calzaghe was doing.
Calzaghe P4P #1
I never said Joe Calzaghe wasn't a great fighter, i was actually more disappointed with RJJ than Joe Calzaghe. RJJ showed no desire or ETC to win the fight, and Joe Calzaghe's taunting was just ridiculous.
I've personally never seen a fighter taunt that much in one fight, not even Muhammad Ali.
I give Joe Calzaghe credit for beating Mikkel Kessler, Bernard Hopkins, Chris Eubank ETC. And i think especially in the Mikkel Kessler and Chris Eubank fights he looked great.
And even though i feel Bernard Hopkins may of beaten Joe Calzaghe by one point. I still think Joe Calzaghe done well considering Bernard Hopkins still has alot left in the tank.
I think people are misunderstanding me im just disappointed with everything regarding the fight. The hype ETC, even though i knew RJJ was shot i thought he would atleast try and win, and let it all hang out.
But he didn't after the first couple of rounds he was there just to survive. And Joe Calzaghe was just constantly taunting, that at times it did look like a glorified sparring session.
Im very disappointed with both fighters, and thats not to say Joe Calzaghe isn't a great fighter he done his job and won, no arguments but im still very disappointed, and i hope i've made my point more clear now.

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I think a big aspect is that Jones doesn't have the style to carry on into his older years.. He relied on a killer instinct, explosive one punch 'knock your head off' blows, being pretty much unhittable (unless he was drawing a guy in to knock his head off). Without the killer instinct, the unhittableness. The knock your head off punches, he isn't left with anything at all to beat a half decent fighter that is even going to provide a decent amount of pressure... In his day though, his qualities made him an amazing fighter.. Almost like, a Mayweather defence, but if Mayweather could leap forward and knock guys out in 2 or 3 rounds, that was what Roy did, and why he was such a lovable fighter..
The qualities just havn't carried over through the years..
B-Hop's qualities have always been Nitty gritty, resourceful, frustrating, grind away at opponent - And you can see that it worked for him throughout his whole career, and even at an older age, he can still use all those qualities to keep him in fights with the P4P best guys out there...
I really wished Roy had done more in this fight and risked more.. It's hard to see the young Roy in this old version.. it's disheartening especially for a fan.. I myself am going to forget his last 5 or 6 years, and remember the glory days.. And count his latest performances on the fact he just didn't have the quality and style that was going to lend itself to fighting during older age.. But it was those qualities and style that made me love him as a fighter in the first place... So still got Love for Roy...
Just he should stay out of the ring now as I don't think anyone can see him pulling out a turning back the clock performance...

Calzaghe P4P #1
You might just appreciate going forward, he certainly didn't land clean punches on Hopkins, in fact those three left hands they showed leading into the fight were about all he landed on Bernard. I agree he made adjustments against Hopkins, but I think it evened up the fight, and I had him winning most of the rounds from that point on MORE because Hopkins got tired then anything, and He was still throwing a lot of punches. I had it even with Hopkins winning on the knockdown, how does that make somebody a hater. I had him winning all but maybe 2 rounds against Roy. I question somebodies boxing knowledge even in the great boxing nation of Peurto Rico if they think leaving your hands down and asking to be hit is making adjustments. I think that Joe realized Roy wasn't throwing punches, thats not a huge surprise. He didn't give any Roy a whole lot of different looks, he just imposed his will on a guy who has let opponents do that to him for the past 5 years.
Joe is a great fighter, but his weaknesses weren't exposed by old men, his weaknesses because of his chin need to be exploited round after round, and Bernard and Roy couldn't do that effectively anymore.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I also think it will be taking away from any fighter who tries to take a fight with Roy after this... He didn't put enough in past the first few rounds.. And any fighter that wants to make a fight with him and is prepared to use him as a punching bag on the ropes for 9 rounds, they should give it a miss and find a younger hungrier opponent.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
Calzaghe showboats when he's in the zone. When he's not in the zone he doesn't showboat. Calzaghe was using his showboating to dishearten a showboater.

I understand your point but you're talking about one 2 of the best two fighters of our generation and I feel like I witnessed a hell of a fight regardless of their age. Both guys fought clean and there's no controversy and that's very important to see in a fight of this magnitude.
The showboating was started by Jones and Joe kept it going. I've seen Roy show out plenty times in his career so I don't understand what the big deal is with a guy having some fun in what was probably gonna be the last 12 rounds of an illustrious career.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
And unlike the hopkins fight, this fight was fought clean with very few clinches. That's how all fights should be fought. Roy showed heart if not anything else tonight.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
Joe is a great fighter even if it was a shell of the prime RJJ, Calzaghe still schooled him. At the end of the match he gave Roy his due and was classy about it. Joe doesn't need to prove anything. You may not like his style, but what he does, he does best.

Are you an idiot?
Styles make fights and Hopkins is too elusive to ever be "destroyed" Joe couldn't finish a on the ropes zero offense shot fighter in Jones who didn't even "evade" shots. How on earth does he "demolish" a game Hopkins who already know he has to be more aggressive against Joe now.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
No matter how bad i want to see hopkins knocked out. I have come to realize that there ain't nobody that's gonna do it now. he has to be one of the best defensive fighters ever. He has to be right up there with "will 'o the wisp".

Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I don't think he quite as hard to hit as Floyd Mayweather, but Bernard is a better inside fighter, and I think he is sneakier with that right hand.

I think he's harder to hit. Bhop can slip, force misses, and step around punches.
PBFs strong point is his rolling. Floyd parries and blocks alot of oncoming punches and rolls straights.
Bhop would rather not get hit at all whereas floyd wil take a shot in the arm or glove.
With bhop its like hitting wind and nothing but wind, then you are grabbed when you finally have a chance to connect.
With floyd.. You land punches that are rolled off his gloves and shoulders..but atleast you hit something lol.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe A Disgraceful Fight.
I will reiterate, Floyd is harder to hit cleanly. I think they have similar level of skill but Floyd is a better athlete with a little quicker reflexes p4p.

cant argue with that.
haven't seen anyone with floyds reflexes in a long time.
What makes floyd so great on top of that is he is a text book fighter.
He does everything by the book for the most part. And his offense doesn't consist of
combinations. He throws 1 punch at a time. There's always a pause in his combination.
He looks for the immediate opening before throwing another punch.. he's pretty brilliant.
