Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
Ok, I'm sure there may have been a thread on this before but I couldn't find it, and I thought I'd ask why do people seem to hate Amir Khan quite as much as they do?
This is inspired by this article on the Ring website that paints the picture of a very likable, humble young man.
Khan can't afford to be star-struck against Barrera
I know some of the reasons will be that he's overhyped and has never fought any real challengers (well apart from Prescott ;)), but than is he any different from a lot of other fighters from these shores? The same accusations could just as easily be levelled at Froch & there's no way Khan is anywhere near the cockiest fighter about, & a lot of the interviews I've seen him give about MAB show a guy who's full of respect for the legend he's about to face. I find it really curious because a lot of British posters who seem to support & hype every other British boxer under the sun often ignoring logic, really lay into him.
I mean he's close to a model professional, he's not Audley giving us boring fights & he's not like Witter or Froch badmouthing the champion bitterly.
So why all the hate?

I honestly think it's because people picture him getting a free ride to the top on the Warren Express. Khan himself is not really the issue in the equation. He's definately got some admirable skills and hand speed, of course his chin must be brought up in any conversation.
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
yep killer the free ride on the Warren Express is part of it no doubt.
His cockiness is another part - and believeing his own hype. A lot of people forget he called out Mayweather (over 4 rounds) and said he was ready for him 2+ years ago. That annoyed me I can tell you - yes he's young but do you remember any other fighter in past doing that to the p4p best at such an early stage ??
I know there are other fighters who are cocky who the public don't turn against but Khan was like it off camera. Have told this story a couple of times before about when bollywood awards had an event in Leeds and he drove round the one way system on a summers evening in a Lamborghini blowing his horn basically saying 'look at me - do you know who I am'. Don't think there wasn't a bloke out that night in Leeds who didn't see him and say 'tosser'.;) Prove yourself then get cocky if you want.
We have also seen it before with Naz - striking similarities but Naz backed it up to a large extent (till he got in with another p4per - forget who that was ;))
People also resent the riches before they even step through the ropes - not his fault I know.
From what I've heard the Prescott defeat has humbled him so let's see. However if it wasn't for his chin with his skill, speed and agility he could potentially have gone on to be one of the best fighters this country has ever produced.
Unfortunately his chin isn't going to get any stronger though, and let's face it he's had some patchy moments with some lower rung fighters, so it's only a matter of time before the Khan Roadshow comes to an abrupt halt and I believe this will happen sooner rather than later.
Not sure if Barrera has enough left to end it next month...

Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
From a global perspective being a young hyped Brit automatically guarantees a huge hate-filled bandwagon.
I certainly don't hate Khan.. I wish him well.
But things that are jarring concerning his career are - the over cynical matchmaking (powderpuffs because of his obvious china chin and now a PPV fighter) - and the fact he was constantly compared with Naz early doors. He was never going to emulate Naz ;)
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
Cuz he's a cocky, arrogant young man who can't back up his talk. Simple as.

Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
It's always baffled me why people on here hate on Khan so much, I was going to start a thread on here a week or so ago very similar to this thread. It was a little sad to see how a lot of people revelled in his KO by Prescott, fellow Brits on here even having the KO as their sigi...
Khan himself is a nice lad if a little naive and a good prospect . Sure he's young and over confident but that's hardly a rarity in this sport.
People have taken their disdain for Warren and used it on Khan. I'll be interested to see how people treat the the likes of De Gale and Saunders when Warren has protected them for 10 - 20 fights
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
I don't hate Khan, but have have gone from looking forward to seeing him fight to looking forward to seeing him get knocked out. I think it has something to do with it being funny. Not even sure why.
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
Quite frankly all the Khan hate confuses me. I really don't see how people call him cocky... I don't know about off-camera, but on camera he's never showed a sign of cockyness to me and I've seen quite a few Khan interviews.
Saying he is fighting powderpuff fighters is also a pretty stupid reason. He is 22, he's still at an early age at his career... hell, Joe Calzaghe fought shitty opponents for the better part of 10 years, I don't see anyone seeing him want to get KTFO? In fact the reality is almost every fighters first 20 or so fights will be a steady building process, gradually increasing the opposition, which in truth he has...
His last 6 fights have been against a..- A previous world title challenger (correct me if i'm wrong) - Graham Earl
- A ex world champion (again, correct me if i'm wrong) - Gairy St.Clair
- A top 10 lightweight in the WBA rankings - Martin Kristjansen
- A ex WBU champion with decent power, past his best a bit maybe... - Michael Gomez
- A dangerous columbian banger with a almost perfect KO percentage, this one didn't turn out so well of course.. - Breidis Prescott
- And of course Oisin Fagan.... not much to say about him.
Which when you look at it isnt THAT bad. Every boxers first 20 or so fights will be padded slightly, why can't people seem to realise that?
When it all comes down to it I think one thing above all fuels the hate for him, especially in England - his race. Which I think is pretty sad, the boy is british either way. I couldn't care if he was knocked out 10 times in a row, if the boy was british I would be behind him 100% of the way. I'm backing him to beat Barrera and I hope he does, I think it's pretty low when people are running around saying they hope Barrera knocks him out brutally... especially if their british.

Guys like Mayweather, Tszyu, Cotto and ODLH had been in with real champs, and won world titles at the same stage of their career as Khan is at, yet none except maybe Oscar got the hype and especially the money Khan is getting....

Joe Calzaghe beat Chris Eubank for the WBO title after 4 years. He won the British title after 2 years.
Khan is in his 4th year as a pro. He's yet to challenge for the British title let alone a "world" title. He STILL hasn't proved himslef to be the best lightweight in Britain. Unbeaten John Murray is the Brit champ and Jon Thaxton is European champ.
Khan was purposely matched with powderpuff punchers because it looked likely (probably from the time Craig Watson turned him into a drunk) he was a bit chinny. It then became blatantly obvious his punch resistance was shockingly poor when non-punchers were hurting/decking him.
None of these things justify someone being a PPV fighter. That alone is enough to turn many neutrals against him.

Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
cos he gets too much media coverage & is a greedy bstard
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
He's not humble at all, when he first came out, he was like I'm the best blah blah, kind of trying to be Naz or something. Maybe he can stfu now he got knocked out.
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
Although I made a video of him getting knocked the phuk out I don't hate the kid.
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
Fenster is right here. It's the chin thing that annoys everybody*. It's obvious he can't take a punch from somebody his own weight so when he gets fed past-it super-feathers and nonpunching lightweights and he's still talking about world titles it gets on everybody's nerves. I don't dislike him but I really don't want to see him beat Barrera.
*or at least everybody on here, coupled with the world title talk.

Why should we support Khan just on that basis. We wouldnt be true boxing fans then if we supported fighters just because they are British .
Im backing Barrera over Khan because I much prefer him as a fighter. Nationality should never come into it. Its all about preference
I agree that if you dont really know either guy then you usually back the home fighter but at this level picking favourites isnt dicated by what Country they are from .

Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
I got flamed for this last time but race and religion come into it somewhere.
Not saying anybody on the board dislikes him because of this - i would presume if you're on this board you have enough boxing reasons to dislike someone.
The reason i bring race and religion into it is because thats invariably the first thing that a great deal of people in my area seem mention when a Khan fight is being screened at a venue in my area. It's actually quite sickening. Maybe these people don't know anything about him so they look at the most obvious thing. Maybe Leeds is a very racist area - although i don't see why it would be any worse than anywhere else.
Anyway hopefully that's just a small minority. It's not something i particularly want to debate again as a lot will find it ridiculous, but it's the truth of what i've experienced when there has been a Khan fight shown in town. It's a very different atmosphere from a Hatton or a Clazaghe fight.
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
I don't like Khan and I've not given Calzaghe an easy time either. It's not because I hate on the darker skin tones or the Welsh pretending to be Italian.
But let's deal with the race issue since it seems to be what a number of people are focused on and keep bringing up.
Anyone?

It doesn't matter to me whether a fighter is british or martian for that matter. If I like a guy I like him, if not I don't. I've said before it's Warren I hate not Khan but on the same note Khan still needs to earn his respect and not just expect it.
And as for padded slightly, compare Khans first 20 with Oscars. I don't think I need to say anymore.

on a serious note, I don't dislike him at all, I think he comes across alright - not really that cocky. Okay he said that 4 round thing about PBF and the 2% body fat claim, but he never said those things as a means to disrespect anyone. The first quote was said when he was still a teenager, a young man who gets every single thing he says scrutinised and these are the two worst things people can find he says. It's not as if he's badmouthing prospective opponents or anything, saying Murray is an arsehole and I don't want to give him a payday or anything like that.

Very very few fighters in history will have first 20 fights comparable in degree to Oscar.

I think we can accept that we are in a day where tabloid newspapers like to run stories about how 'our country' is no longer 'our country' and idiots tend to believe it.
It's obviously a sensitive issue to talk about and i only brought it up because what i experienced when i watched the fight in town, wasn't pleasant.

I went to a Khan fight to offer some local support, not to Khan. They segregated the fans as they came in, an annoucement came over the speaker system about no racist chants etc not being tolerated and there was a big police pressence.
Annoyed the hell out of me. Especially when a group of lads, all asian, all sporting Khan tracksuits:rolleyes: were sat in the opposing area. As the evening went on them were surrounded by police to protect them. They sat about grinning over the shoulders of the police as a few people were escourted out. The whole event had an air of wtf  about it.
Nothing against them or Khan but, by forcing the fans to segregate and making an issue about Khans colour it draws attention to something that wasn't a problem until other people made it so. I've never been segregated like that in my life.
I don't like Warren and his overprotection of fighters. It harms the fighter and the quality of the sport in general and I don't like bangwaggons, so called fans who just sign up to a sole fighter based on whatever link they think they have with them.
Those who support Khan because of his ethnicity annoy me just as much as those who don't support him because of his ethnicity.
Which is pretty much the feeling I have toward pacfans in general.;D:cool: Hell at least they have a fighter that's done something to shout about.

no problem I do understand your concern I don't think most true fans think that way but you'll always get nutters.

Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
I really like Amir Khan, In my eyes hes a clean living perfect rolemodel for any kids out there, boxing fans or not, he sometimes goes out round my local town, my wife works with one of his mates and he just seems an all round top bloke and true professional.
And lets not forget hes actually a very talented boxer.
but then others see other things, hes a fraud, hes on a protected free ride to the top, His fights are on PPV (my gripe), hes living with his head in the clouds.
And the worst bit for me is this (and dont take offence) hes a paki. Simple as that, its racist in the year 2009 but theres still plenty of them out there. And they hated Naseem Hamed and compare the 2, which to me shows its nothing more than racism as other than the colour of their skin they are nothing alike, and where were all these racists when he was winning the UK a silver medal at the olympics?
Personally i blame the media for hyping him up, they always do with medal winners, Frank Warren for protecting him and his family for forcing Warren to sign him up to PPV with their massive money demands.
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
I couldn't care less about Khan to be honest. I hope Barrera beats the living crap out of him though because I'm a Barrera fan. But otherwise I haven't paid much interest in Khan. Doesn't compute with me really.
-
Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
One of the main reasons that people in Britain dont like Khan is because they dont like to see a sucssesfull ,rich Asian bloke.
I know some on here have other reason such as to much media hype/money to soon but thats not exactly his fault is it.
He just fights who gets put in front of him by Warren.
Some dont like him becuse he is calling out the best fighighters in the world at the same time they say he is not fighting good enough opponents.

Khan tracksuits? ;D How old were they 11/12?
Why were the guys getting escorted out?
I can understand the support because of his ethnicity. Just like I understand why people see that as hypocritical/wrong.
I knew a few Pakistani muslims that would make a big deal about supporting Naz. Would give it the "he is one of us" line. Always found that a bit weird :-\

Which is pretty much the feeling I have toward pacfans in general.;D:cool: Hell at least they have a fighter that's done something to shout about.
Just about sums it up for me and I couldn't give a phuck if a fighter is pink with green spots, if he can back up his mouth in the ring he gets my support if he Kharnt he don't.

Maybe things are different in London?
Or maybe i don't know any racists.

Always found that a bit weird :-\
they were about 18-22ish ;D
Everyone was ignoring them and watching the fight till someone took the decision to place them in police protection. It provoked a tense situation and made it worse. People started lipping them and the porkers.
Thing is Fenster we'd get called racist if we only supported white guys.:-\

I know some on here have other reason such as to much media hype/money to soon but thats not exactly his fault is it.
He just fights who gets put in front of him by Warren.
Some dont like him becuse he is calling out the best fighighters in the world at the same time they say he is not fighting good enough opponents.
People hate Warren because he's a closet ginger and bug eyed?

Bandwagon. It sounds cool to hate him thesedays. His brittle chin didn't help him much. But to be honest the guy got some skills. Badly needs to prove the world he ain't shit. Barrera, no matter how faded he is..is a good gut-check for him. If Khan fails, it's over him. Most likely.:-\

Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
not really he wins even if he loses.
'well it's no disgrace to lose to Barrera because he's a legend etc', 'he's young he can come back', 'he's learnt alot from this', 'all the greats have lost'. Heard it all before.

People in Britain? Don't you mean SOME people?
Khan is one of the most popular fighters in Britain.
Who are these people that resent his success because of his ethnicity? Personally i don't know any.

Su segunda pregunta. Si.

Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
I don't know if it was a subconsciece thing or not but the comparison with Naz came about immediately, and from the press. They have very different fighting styles, and guys like Witter/Froch/Degale are closer to Naz in terms of a boastful peronality.

Re: Why do people hate Amir Khan so much? (Ring article attached)
Regardless whether people here will admit their prejudice or not (maybe it's a subconscious racism), majority of the people dislike Khan simply because he is
A) Of Pakistani background
and
B) He is a Muslim
Majority of the folks here that dislike Khan use excuses such as 'He's cocky' (which fighter isn't?) or 'He doesn't fight great competition' yet even when he's stepping up to fight Barrera, posters here find yet ANOTHER excuse to knock him down.
If Amir Khan was a Mexican fighter with the name Jorge Vicario, a Caucasian British Fighter named Bruce Kingston he would not get NEARLY the same heat he currently receives simply because his ethnic background is Pakistani and he's Muslim

Muslim and Pakistani is what I beleive as to why he garners so much hatred. Another poster from England mentioned awhile ago (can't recall the thread) that he was at his local bar where Khan was fighting and he was caught by surprise by the amount of racial obcenities towards Khan...and this was IN ENGLAND. The same country Khan won a Silver Medal for.
The thing I find most amusing on this forum is the NUMBER of excuses posters use to slag Khan when IMO, it's clearly evident that they are using this excuses to express their inner hatred towards Khan simply because of his ethnic and religious background. Of course, they will not come out and say it as they will be seen as 'racist' so why not slag him for his 'glass chin' and 'his ducking competition'.
