If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
Wow HBO was bullshit last night, I was so upset when they showed Cotto's family when he lost and they were crying, it was classless to do, and now they did it with the Hatton family again. I know its a indication that our whole society is fucked up, but they shouldn't show that, and when Hatton clearly didn't want to be shown on his way back to the locker room they should give him, his space.
-
Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
I have just finished watching the HBO version just now actually.
I thought it was very distasteful of them to show Ricky walking out at the end. Surely a Hatton team member putting a hand and towel over the camera should have been warning enough. But no, they keep following all the way back to his room. Personally, I would have smashed the camera onto the floor stopping them in their tracks. But that's just me. :-X
And yes, showing tearful family members isn't cool. Ricky was badly hurt in there, but there is no need to take away peoples dignity live on television by showing their distress.
HBO should quit with that kind of thing, because it really is in VERY poor taste.

Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
They did the same thing when Cotto lost to Margarito. I don't have much of a problem with it, especially in Hatton's case since obviously with 24/7 he is used to the cameras and for as much as he got paid I'm not sure that was to bad. The showing of family members while their loved one is on another planet on the canvas is another thing, I think that's tacky and without taste.

I really don't see the problem with it, both fighters got something like $12,000,000 dollars each for the fight and Hatton's family have always been more than happy to have their faces plastered in the papers and push themselves forward on his 24/7 shows.
The money these guys earn (and hence their families get too) is so insane it puts them in the same level as Hollywood earners. If they want to take that much money from the public then they inevitably lose the right to some level of anonymity.
I have no problem at all with a couple of glancing camera shots into the crowd.

Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
That's the risk you take when you bring your family to watch you getting the living crap beat out of you and the cameras are rolling. I'm sure the Hatton clan cheered mightily the last time Hatton beat the crap out of someone. What goes around comes around.
-
Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
I don't think money meant much to the family when they weren't sure if their guy was ever going to be the same. That's a sensitive moment, you could see his fiance was literally shaking it was no good.
As for the money, I really don't think Cotto's kids cared about the money their daddy earned when they were shown crying on TV by HBO. That is crossing the line don't you think? And I'm not one to get to riled up over these things either.

They showed Ricky's girlfriend screaming after the PBF KO too.

That's right.
And it doesn't just get put on tv for that one time. You get muppets on less tasteful sites putting up pictures, adding captions and taking the piss and thinking it's all one big joke. So, it doesn't just stay on HBO it ends up all over the place.
Not nice at all.

It's life mate, what about all the aid campaigns we watch with crying African children or people mourning their lost ones in a natural disaster. The camera doesn't turn away from them instead it focuses on them, the only difference here is that the people involved are mega rich superstars who put themselves and their families in the limelight to make a fortune and then can't complain when they get filmed when things go wrong.
By the way, have any fighters actually complained about this? Personally I think not showing their reactions would be censorship, seeing the worry and concern on his loved one's faces only serves to reinforce what a brutal sport boxing is.

I agree; it's life. It is tasteless but so is life in general. Don't like it turn it off. I paid 50$ for a fight and got what looked like a skit from Benny Hill. Ricky said himself that he and Manny were knockout fighters and someone was going to get knocked out......well someone got ktfo and seeing as how it is a brutal sport and people's sensibilities at the time aren't very sensible, than be prepared for the gory extras.
I personally liked seeing Ricky being followed out; I wanted to see if he was walking normal. Better than seeing a stretcher hauling him out. I would have rather seen the camera pointed in the audience than watching Ricky gasping for breath and looking like a fish. If the family didn't want to be seen crying they should have put those Ricky masks on;D
Now the child thing isn't cool; like what happened with Cotto. But maybe the children shouldn't be there. I am glad Ricky doesn't let his son go to his fights. Kid would have been shaken for life watching that:o
It is tasteless no doubt; but when you are in the limelight and getting paid that kind of $$$ expect tasteless to follow you around. Since when has $$$ and tactfulness been a couple? I hope when Larry Merchant has a stroke at one of these they film the whole thing live:LOLATYOU:

I don't even find it tasteless, it's just an accurate and complete potryal of the event. If the cameras turn away from looking into the crowd its censorship in my view.
If it would have been Manny knocked out would you object to Hattons family being filmed cheering?
Boxing is a brutal sport, as is life in general. The camera's like Hatton's family were at a PUBLIC event, therefore the camera cans pan where they want.
If they tried to record Ricky or his family in the dressing room against their wishes, then that is something else, but at a public event, especially one where both fighters and by association familes are benefitting by the way of several million pounds then they cannot object (and to my knowledge havn't) to being captured on film in that public event.
I even think the same regarding Cotto's children. The Margarito Cotto fight again was a PUBLIC event where the cameras have every right to film that public event and present as complete a picture of the event as possible.
Again they should not be filmed weeping in the dressing room, that's not public but the arena was completely public and therefore anything that happens in that arena is by definition public and ok for filming.
If you don't want to be pictured grieving at a public massively televised event then don't go.
Sorry for the repetitive emphasis of the same points over and over and the use of capital letters, I annoy myself too when I do that, but as you cannot see when I point and wag my fingers I need to do something to convey the importance I feel should be attached to my words :)

No problem Bilbore; I think everyone is used to it. Good points for sure.
I mean when you were fighting to breathe and pushing your little oxygen tank around the UK with tubes trailing behind you it would have been perfectly legal to film you in your misery; tasteless but expected. Now had they followed you into your hobbit hole, knowing you were too weak to put up a fight, to film your excessive snivelling and vomit marathons that sir would have crossed the legal line. I'm with you little buddy:)

Exactly, although for the millions Hatton and his family got paid they could have filmed me pissing and shitting myself at the same time as I struggled to puke into my little bucket whilst crowds of onlookers looked on and laughed.

Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
He threw up???
This is the world of boxing, the announcers are as fair weather as you can get because if they are good to whoever wins the HBO might be able to sign them for future fights. But in this case obviously they wanted to re-hype Manny to perhaps get a super-duper matchup between Manny and the PBF-JMM winner

Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
Its just a continuum. We rant and cheer as they come in and follow them out after they fall. All the while the cameras rolling and at the front showing it all.You do notice usually that they only follow the defeated to the locker room though? Its been happening for the longest time on the major networks.Maybe its twisted but it sort of reflects the ease with which we mourn.Totally off topic, but collectively,'we' seem to have a knack for being seen mourning. How quickly do these constant public displays pop up,crowds gathered around dropping flowers, signing huge posters, every one sobbing and about 20 + cameras rolling.Seems to happen everyday with todays media.Shite,I just drove this car of a post off of the road and into the woods :cwm13:.

Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
Don't forget that the family allowed themselves to be filmed on 24-7, and since the PPV was HBO as well, the fight is basically a continuation of everything. The main purpose of 24-7 is to bring awareness to mainstream fans who may not be hardcore fans about an upcoming fight. It does seem tasteless but Cotto and Hatton's family's are hardly the first to be taped when their family member get's his @ss handed to him.
-
Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
Sports is about greatness of victory and sadly at times agony of defeat. Life has it's up's and downs. If you don't mind dressin up in your fancy gigs and having the camera on you during the good times then be prepared to have people curious to your reaction during the bad. These guys and thier families get paid tons of dough and are catered to pretty well and it's not like they are playing pro dodge ball and dragged into this sport by gun point. I'm sure by the time they get to the atm especially since it wasn't them taking the ass whoopin they'll be ok.
-
Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
I don't think it's tasteless to show either the fam. or Ricky walking away.
After all it's part of the sport you win some you lose some.
Not only HBO but almost any network shows loved ones ringside before, after and during fights. The list is endless and it wont be the last it's part of the show. (For HBO)
-
Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
I agree with Bilbo, they have a right to film whatever they want at the end of the day, they are paying for it.
-
Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
After seeing the children of Cotto crying while he was being beaten senseless, I have to agree that it adds absolutely nothing to the sport of boxing. Entertainment, voyeurism...yes. I could watch Gerry Springer for the same effect. But HBO? hmmmm
-
Re: If HBO shows such a lack of class again...
The families of these fighteres weren't FORCED to be at the fight...if you show up at the venue then you are fair game IMO....let that be a warning to all other fighters.

Yes, but the producers still have a choice to show the family during the tense and sad moments of the fight or not. Why they have to show children crying in a boxing match is beyond me. I want to see a fight and not a movie. I guess the producers think there are those in the audience who like to see the drama of children crying after seeing their dad all bloodied and defenseless. I pity those who do. :(

It is ok to show two men violently punch each others faces in, but when you show a child crying, that's were it crosses the line?
No offense, but quit being such a big pussy Halo.

That is exactly my point. I am watching a boxing match where "two men violently punch each others faces in". I am not watching daytime television. So why show a child crying?!? O yes..the melodrama of tears falling down the cheeks of children ladida ladida. Am I the pussy then? If I get pissed seeing crying children interrupting people killing each and that is what you brand as being a big pussy, then I just may be one. Actually, I'd rather see one than be one... wink wink
