The Mayweathers

How many world champions have they produce and how long have they been active trainers?

We all know they weren't that good of a fighter themselves, but are they riding the glory of Floyd jr? They have a great fighter in Floyd Jr, how much credit do they actually deserve? I haven't seen any footage of any elder Mayweather telling floyd jr how to fight. Seem like Floyd trains himself.

Sr had Oscar for a while, and he has Guzman but how much credit does he actually have?

Do we lack great trainers today, is that one of the reason why these two Mayweather trainers are getting so much credit?

I am glad someone touched down on this subject. Me for one I don't like anything they seem to be training their fighter's. But it does work for Floyd Jr. They really didn't have to teach him much he was fighting since he was like 5 or something. When you fight that much all there really needs to be is a tweak here and there. If you look at Floyd's style he has the same style now as he did in the olympics. As for them training other fighter's the only one who had did anything was Oscar and he already had like 4 championship belts in 4 different weight classes. He was an accomplished fighter. I really can't think of anyone else that they trained and did well.

Erm... Roger Mayweather was a two weight world champ. He deserves credit for a good solid career.

As trainers, they are very good, more evidenced by their work with weaker fighters like Jeff with Sultan Ibragimov, or Floyd Sr with Steve Forbes. What Floyd Sr did with Oscar & Guzman as well was impressive.

However, IMO none of them are on the same level as Freddie Roach or Nacho Beristain right now.

Did Roger hold any Lineal Titles?

I agree Roach and Beristain are better trainers, but the Mayweather get considerred better by some its crazy. :mad:

I agree Roach and Beristain are better trainers, but the Mayweather get considerred better by some its crazy. :mad:

Yes, he did, he was the lineal Super-Featherweight champion in the 80s.

Some might consider his win over Rene Arredondo worthy of also making him lineal champ at Light-Welter, following on from Arredondo's fights with Hamada, but personally I wouldn't say there was a lineal champion till JCC beat Mayweather as they were IMO the 2 best guys in the division at that time.

Even then you could even make an argument that it was the Taylor-Chavez fight that was the 'real' lineal championship fight.

Mayweather Sr gave SRL his first fight with a world champ. And he fought Marlon Starling.

Brandon Mayweather is Floyds youngest brother. He's getting started in the heavyweight ranks. Floyd Sr had him from another girlfriend on the side.

And when was Sr. a world champion? Leonard's first fight with a current world champion was with Benitez.

Roger "Black Mamba" was a good fighter who was a legitimate champion. And Floyd Sr. got his career cut short but he was an average figther who could make some noise. He also started off training Chad Dawson. They were better fighters than they are trainers.

I've already answered that earlier, he's good, not great. My problem was you saying he wasn't much of a fighter, which just wasn't the case for anyone who's seen him.

Obviously as you haven't seen him fight you will go with the only one you've seen, but Mayweather-Chavez was the real lineal fight, the 2 best guys going at it. Although more knowledgable posters than myself have said it should have been the Arredondo-Hamada second fight, & the lineage goes from there.

Thats because so many people judge a trainer by the fighter he currently has...

A good example of an over rated trainer is Emmanual Steward....What was the last fighter he actually had from the ground up? Hearns I think

Yet he is given credit for being a trainer of so many world champions....Most of the guys he has trained in the last 10 years had all the goods he just tweaked them a bit....Not to say anything bad about him because I think the guy is a great trainer but guys like Lewis, Taylor etc would have been a world champion regardless..

Same thing with the Mayweathers....Ask some people and you would think that Floyd SR built DLH yet Oscar was a multi division before Sr ever became involved....Roger is not solely responsible for PBF becoming the fighter he is today

Now that Floyd's dumped the nickname he could call himself Pretty Boy.

Roger was a very tough fighter who had a 59-13 record. He had heavy hands and had a ton of clean icings. He won the WBA Americas Light Welterweight Title, the WBC light welterweight title, the WBA World super featherweight title, the USBA lightweight title, and the WBC Continental Americas lightweight title.

He may be a blithering kook outside the ring, but he knows his boxing and has had great success with it. Numbers don't lie.

Jeff Mayweather went 32-19-5, but lost every time he stepped up.

Senor had a 29-6-1 mark, but did not come close to Roger's success.

Roger Mayweather was a very good fighter. He gave a young Pernell Whittaker a very tough fight, beat Vinny Paz, and lasted with an up and coming Kostya Tszyu. He was the first man to go 12 rounds with him Roger at his best was as good as anyone. He also beat an incredibly tough fighter in Harold Brazier who was on a 20 fight win streak at the time.

Floyd Senior wasnt bad but his best fights were usually losing efforts. He was very game against Leonard and Starling.

Jeff was a solid veteran. He was pretty cagey but far from elite.

Roger could fight,he just had a chin with the predictability of a jack in the box...still don't know how he made it 12 rounds with a streaking Tszyu.Could be caught ugly in the blink of an eye....Pineda,Pendleton,Lockridge,Lovato all one punch KO losses and Brazier all but had him Ko'd.He had one of the better straight right hands in his weight range when he was hot,and could starch or stun many,including Chavez for a moment......Jeff was somewhat a passive boring cutie who never found the next step up.

I have seen a few of his fight, and in relation to my first statement about him I admit I was comparing the other mayweathers to floyd jr. Roger of all the other mayweather besides floyd jr, is an accomplish fighter but is far from great compare to floyd jr.

I forget sometimes it can be very sensitive around here, i should of worded my sentence better.

Back to the topic,...right you did say the Mayweathers are good trainers but not great.
