Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
I am by no means a fan of John Ruiz, but it seems to me he's always constantly getting flack mainly for his ugly style. Which is fine but if you actually look at his record he's got quite a good resume, and was only stopped once by David Tua where he was caught cold.
As i said in another thread, he gets no credit for his 1st two fights with Evander Holyfield. This was the same Evander Holyfield who just fought Lennox Lewis, and Lennox Lewis gets all the credit in the world for the Evander Holyfield fights.
Yet John Ruiz gets no credit, why is that ? i mean he beat Evander Holyfield in the 1st fight and was robbed. And in the rematch Evander Holyfield fought a better fight, yet John Ruiz still come on and dropped Evander Holyfield heavily, and had him all over the place. And he won the last round to beat a good version of Evander Holyfield.
Plus he has some decent wins over Tony Tucker, Hasim Rahman, Andre Golota, Fres Oquendo, Jameel McCline, Jimmy Thunder, Kirk Johnson.
Plus quite a few of his decision losses should of gone his way, he is an ugly fighter and obviously not fan friendly. But i do think he deserves a bit more credit than he gets given.

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
You don't get credit for beating guys coming off two losses. Plus the Ruiz-Holyfield fights were two years after Lewis duffed Holy, right?
-
Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
A lot of the shit he gets is in my eyes due to the WBA, they keep giving him title shots without really earning them. Then again he keeps getting robbed off Valuev!!

Well there 1st meeting was only about 8 months, after the Lennox Lewis fight. And i thought John Ruiz handily beat Evander Holyfield, and was robbed. Evander Holyfield hardly done anything until the later rounds. Even the commentators said it was a bad decision.
The rematch was about 7 months after, and i thought Evander Holyfield fought a better fight and was winning. But John Ruiz come on flooring Evander Holyfield heavily, and he beat a good version of Evander Holyfield.
I know John Ruiz is an ugly fighter, but Bernard Hopkins in his later career. Has been very ugly aswell, im obviously not saying John Ruiz is anywhere near Bernard Hopkins level.
But John Ruiz is effective at what he does, and he has beaten some good names. And like i said except for the David Tua fight, has shown he is quite durable and has been unlucky in some fights.

was thinking bout this the other day and kinda came up with the same conclusion, i mean the whole ugly style thing could also be said about Hatton and well no one really kicks him in the face for it
i don't think Ruiz would ever have won a title in any other era, but he's made the most of what was put in front of him, and hey he also managed to drop Sasquatch on his ass which is always a plus, he does get rated unfairly, and deserves some credit, but he's far from great

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
If you respect guys that get the most out of their natural ability and maybe overachieve you should probably have some sort of respect for Ruiz. Overachievers annoy me personally so I don't really care.

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
No, he did well against an undefeated Kirk Johnson but that is it.

He did do well against Holyfield, it was an aging Holyfield with a f***ked shoulder, but he still did well against an all time great.

A peak Holyfield would KO him in two rounds like he did Rodriguez. Ruiz is very limited.

I don't doubt that.

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
I think to a certain degree he does but alot of it is his fault. John needs to understand that there is life outside the WBA and their crappy ratings and mandatories. There are alot of intriguing fights that can be made for him like a Tua rematch or even a Latino showdown with Arreola. His style might not be the prettiest but it seems that alot of quality fighters have trouble figuring it out and he gets the short end of the stick come decision time. He has sneaky power especially with the right hand and his chin has held up since the Tua blowout. I think John deserves a fight with 1 of the Klitschkos more then some of these other contenders.

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
If you really look at his career he's not got a bad record...
-
Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
His style works for him
He fought some good opp
Can't say much more:-X

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
I don't know if we treat him unfairly. His style is dreadful to watch. At the same time he has fought a lot of the top heavyweights of this not so great heavyweight era. You can't fault him for not fighting lewis because lewis wouldn't fight him. Manny even said he wouldn't let Lewis fight Ruiz during the broadcast of a Ruiz fight.

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
I think when Tua stomped him out like tiny fire, something clicked in him.Like a permanent hug and snuggle safety feature. He was not a bad stand up boxer though with two left feet, potent shots. His early L's to Kobazev and stiff Doc Nicholson could have easily gone in Ruiz's favor.Caught Don Kings favorite fail safe 'challenger' Tucker at the tail end and thought Golota earned the decision over him.He does deserve credit for going three straight with Holyfield and doing very well....I had them 2-1 Holyfield.on the other hand Holyfield should have looked everywhere else rather than 3 goes with that style, think it heavily taxed whatever he had left.
One factor for some dislike could be his former dreadfully obnoxious and fat mouthed corner man Norm stone.Guy was a camera craving knob...loved when he got booted out of corner during the Golota fight haha.Ruiz is what you see, durable, solid righthand, cagey while stunningly shameless in wet blanket style, but he's effective and save for the Tua,Jones,Toney fights, he's kept them all competitive at the next level.Cant knock him for that. He's the ugly Betty of the Heavys.

Ruiz unilaterally makes every fight he is in unwatchable. PLus his victories are tainted by his heavy use of holding, which is cheating and should not be allowed.

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
Ruiz needs to get a PR rep
Do some time
Get some tats
Change that nickname
Most importantly knock some mother f**ker out impressively

Yes. Say what you will, but he survives. Say what you will, but he got hosed against the Beast. Say what you will, but he is a rugged load for any opponent. He doen's give up and I like that quality. But then again, he is from Chelsea, MA. and anyone from there learns to survive.

To be honest I've only seen a handful of Ruiz fights but his reputation as dull and boring is a bit undeserved imo.
His rematch with Valuev he really had a good go and was entertaining. His fight with James Toney was entertaining too.
He's no more boring to me than watching the likes of Alexander Povetkin, Eddie Chambers and Calvin Brock.

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
So Bilbo you name 2 John Ruiz fights from the past couple years and that's your reasoning? The Toney fight was mildly entertaining because he HAD to change his style against Toney or he would have been battered more then he was.
You are on crack if you prefer Ruiz to Chambers and Povetkin. That is such a stupid statement. Like the stupidest statement of all time, really. Ruiz is the ugliest fighter ever to make it in boxing, he's got shot after shot because of his manipulation of sanctioning bodies and threats of lawsuits, Bullshit, Ruiz is one fighter I'd wished never taken up boxing.

Reason enough for me to become a fan right there.

Do you guys even know where that nickname is from?
John Ruiz is dreadful to watch, he's a limited fighter, his style works for him (usually) but recently he has gotten dodgey decisions: Holyfield, Golota, Rahman, McCline...and he simply has never fought or even tried to fight the best in the division.
Ruiz isn't even a top 10 heavyweight right now

Re: Does John Ruiz Get Unfairly Treated ?
Ruiz the boring man is no less fun to watch than Ernie Terrell before Ali beat him unmercifully. Sonny Liston once said he never got hugged by his wife and mother like Ernie Terrell and to top it off It was the only time early in Muhammad Ali's career that he had to fight a unification match and he didn't allow him to hug him. The ones that let Ruiz get in close didn't solve the puzzle properly and Ruiz went on a hugging. I think that if he fought Evander when Evander was Evander, he would have been forced to learn how to fight or quit.
