Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
Chad Dawson Blasts Bernard Hopkins "You Can't Run" - Boxing News
NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Like the proverbial cat on the verge of using up its nine lives, Bernard Hopkins is running out of excuses -- excuses for not fighting undefeated two-time light heavyweight champion CHAD DAWSON.
“He’s on the run like the one-armed man in “The Fugitive.” Eventually the law catches up with him,” said Dawson. “Well I’m the sheriff of the light heavyweight division and I’m putting a stop to Hopkins’ con. First, he said he’d fight the winner of my fight with Glen Johnson. I won and Hopkins hid. Second, he said he’d fight the winner of my rematch with Johnson. I won and this time Hopkins chose to fight some guy named Enrique Ornelas, who has lost to almost every decent middleweight he’s ever fought. And on top of that, the fight isn't worthy of HBO, Showtime or even ESPN 2! Desperate people do desperate things. Hopkins knows that if he fights me he’s looking at a loss of Calzaghe proportions.
“Bernard, it’s time for you to pack it in and get out of my division. If you’re not willing to fight the best light heavyweight, move along and quit wasting everyone’s time. Your deep well of excuses, along with your credibility has dried up. You weighed 175 pounds for tonight’s fight, Roy Jones was knocked out in 122 seconds today and HBO has a March date available. No more excuses. Get onboard with HBO’s original plan for us to fight each other, or as you told ESPN.com this morning, go run "a marathon to super-greatness” away from me."

Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
I love Hopkins but I would avoid Chad Dawson because I see another 12 round decision for the youngster in this 1. He should still move up and try for another title in the Cruisers or if he still wants to fight someone his own age now that Roy is pretty much finished then why not fight James Toney?

Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
If i remember rightly everyone was saying Pavlik would beat BHop, seems people are backing BCD as well.
I would make BHop the Favourite to win!

I was not 1 of them I knew he would beat Pavlik but to me Dawson is all wrong for him because of his speed and reflexes.

Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
yeh i knew Pavlik wouldnt win, the bookies had him fav though

Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
Dawson should forget about Hopkins.
Hopkins is a bad fight for him because whether you win or lose, Hopkins makes you look bad plus a win over Hopkins at his age means Dawson would get no credit for the W.
He should start looking for fights against the younger guys of the division like Cloud for example.
I wouldn't mind seeing Hopkins vs Dawson though, Dawson is a winnable fight for Hopkins.
-
Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
Im a fan of Chad Dawson but come on Chad Dawson, leave the old guys alone and focus on the young uns.

Hopkins is a much bigger money fight than Cloud, even a fight with the Pascal/Diaconu winner is a bigger money fight than Cloud at least in Montreal.
Dawson's problem is not his ability but his marketability. He needs to become a bigger name to the average fan, beating Hopkins would do that for him even if Hopkins made him look bad, beating Cloud in any way not so much.
My bet is that Dawson fights the Pascal/Diaconu winner.

Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
yeh nut the old guy Hopkins is beating the best ICB, or if not winning comming very close.

Nah your not understanding what im saying mate, im not doubting Bernard Hopkins wouldn't be a tough fight for Chad Dawson. I'd just like to see Chad Dawson take on some of the new upcoming Light Heavyweights, its more exciting to me rather than a boring controversial tactical fight with Bernard Hopkins.

Thats exactly why Hopkins isn't interested.
Dawson brings no money to the table.
Beating more top contenders and champs would make him more popular around the boxing world.

Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
Roy losing has completely stuffed Hopkins.
He can't make mega money against Dawson or Adamek but he's back with them as his only two options.
-
Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
Hopkins should go with Adamek. The last thing he needs these days is a really fast guy. Dawson beats Hopkins, sorry. There was ample reason to think he would beat Pavlik, I just don't see it here.

Absolutely agree. And BHop knows Dawson is a problem for his style and age. Dawson is tired of being labeled the number 2 guy in his division when the number 1 guy won't fight him. At first I bought BHop's reasons but now its either fight Dawson, retire, or leave the light heavyweight division alone.

In every fight there will be people backing each fighter. In no way can you compare Pavlik to Dawson. Completely different in too many ways. You'd be closer comparing Taylor or Calzaghe to Dawson...who BHop is 0-3 against.

Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
I agree with dawson. Fight him or give up the spot.
-
Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
Any chance Hopkins would fight Danny Green now? I think it'd make him as much money as Dawson or Adamek and is probably an easier fight.

It might make him as much money if he went to Australia but there's no chance of that. Green doesn't even have a title to spruce it up.

No title? The most prestigious title in boxing! The IBO belt.;D
If BHOP cant beat RJJ he may go to Australia and beat the man who beat RJJ? Wishful thinking!

Yeah.
I guess Enrique Ornelas is a cash cow, huh?
-
Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
Ornelas is a stay busy tune up type thing, which makes sense considering his age, he's gonna want big money to fight Dawson.
-
Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
This fight needs to happen, its one the most important fights in boxing, and two guys who should or are in the top 5 p4p fighting. This is a huge fight and I would like to see it. I felt Hopkins beat Calzaghe on the knock down in a really close fight, but I think Dawson is or will be better than Calzaghe before his career is over, he's harder to hit, he's faster, throws real punches, I think special things are in store for us between him and the deep, deep 168 pound field, but first he needs to beat Hopkins if he can. The biggest problem Hopkins had with Calzaghe was output, and Dawson is the huge output kind of guy, also Hopkins looked very quick and had plenty of stamina for his fight with Pavlik. I just don't see Dawson's problems which are mostly his defensive foot movement(which is choppy and way too slow) causing him troubles against Hopkins, and I think he would have a lot more success against Hopkins's defense because he is the fastest guy Hopkins will ahve fought since Jones in 93, and he's a lot more calculated and goes to the body much better than Calzaghe.
-
Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
Two times now Hopkins sat and counted the bucks waiting, only to watch rival cash cow Jones get handled badly.Dawson needs him much, much more than Hopkins needs a Dawson. He's where the glory and the history are at...rematch wins over Johnson and Tarver will not put Dawson on the map.Talk loud and hope to draw him in,he may bite.I think Hopkins barring some insta age and depletion can handle Dawson.First things first....Hopkins has to look lively and impressive tonight vs Rugged Ornelus

There's an important factor here that your missing though Ice.
Bernard technically was the linear champ at light heavyweight. He beat Antonio Tarver to claim the undisputed title and was the Ring champ. Since then he lost to Calzaghe in a close fight but Calzaghe has now retired. Also there was no belt on the line against Calzaghe as it was fought at 170 so Hopkins is basically still the linear champ.
You will see that the Ring now have the 175 title as vacant and it will remain as long as B Hop keeps fighting and avoiding Chad Dawson.
Dawson wants to be recognised as the the undisputed champ at 175 and the only way he can lay claim to that is by beating Hopkins.
For Dawsons status as number, for his legacy in beating the old champion and for the universal respect of fight fans he needs to beat Bernard Hopkins.
Wins over the likes of Tarver, Johnson and maybe Pascal or Diaconu won't make him number one the way a win over B Hop will.
Clearly Dawson wants B Hop, its by far the most significant fight out there for him, and he wants to say he beat the champ to become the champ.

Re: Dawson Blasts Hopkins "You Can't Run"
dawson better be careful what he asks for. 2 mediocre fights with johnson IMO with him losing the first one and now he thinks he's the shet... i say hopkins crashes dawsons parade and send him back to new haven with his jaw on a sling. they said that about pavlik kick bhops ass but we saw what happend

The lightheavy title was on the line (it wasn't at 170). Calzaghe then defended it against Roy.
It's vacant cause he retired.

If Dawson is such an easy win for BHop then why is he avoiding him? Obviously BHop doesn't think so. BHop was willing to fight Adamek, whom Dawson beat. BHop was willing to fight Glen Johnson had he beat Dawson either time. And BHop was willing to fight Ornelas for a mere $200,000 so money is not the issue. And you can't be serious comparing Pavlik to Dawson. That is so laughable. People said BHop would beat Taylor. Look what happened there. Anybody can play that game...its called avoidance. There are 1000 differences between Dawson and Pavlik. They fight nothing alike not to mention Dawson is bigger, faster, stronger, more athletic, more agile, more versatile, more equipped, better experienced, southpaw, etc... BHop fans can say what they want about why he won't fight Dawson, its easy for us to talk on the sideline, but the man who actually has to step in the ring with Dawson refuses to take the fight every single time. How can anybody, fan or hater, spin for the good what BHop is blatantly doing to avoid a Dawson fight?

Him beating the Young ones isnt gonna get him the exposure he needs. He needs a bunch of names on his resume to have some sort of draw so fighting(and beating if he did) Hopkins would make him a name and he may even get a ppv match out of it. But he has to fight these "old guys" to get his name out because he isnt a naturally hyped ko machine

I don't know, according to boxrec Calzaghe Hopkins wasn't a title fight.

Calzaghe - Hopkins was at the 175 weigh limit. Both fighters weighed in at 173 at the weigh in.
Just thought i would let you know. :)

I agree that Dawson needs Hopkins much more than Hopkins needs Dawson. Dawson fought Tarver and Johnson because they were the biggest names out there other than Hopkins not because they were the best challenges or for legacy reasons.
I don't necessarily agree that Hopkins will handle Dawson. As Taeth mentioned in a post, Hopkins has a problem with athletic, volume punchers, and Dawson is of that breed. Hopkins hits and holds and one way to beat a holder is to win rounds by punching more a la Calzaghe. It didn't work for Pavlik because Hopkins was the bigger man in that fight and wouldn't let Pavlik get off. In Dawson, Hopkins faces a bigger man who he shouldn't be able to manhandle. On first glance, I like Dawson in that fight actually.

This is right. He isn't the most exciting fighter to watch because at the top level he hasn't been able to knock out anyone.
My opinion is that assuming Dawson can't fight Hopkins, he should fight the Pascal/Diaconu winner and continue trying to unify, even flying to Germany to beat the Miranda/Stieglitz winner.

Dawson is too fresh, hungry and dangerous for Hopkins.
