Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
Boxing is really doing it's best to piss me off so far this year.
The one fight everybody wants to see is off.. and the one fight nobody wants to see is on:D
Despite Jones loss, the Bernard Hopkins-Roy Jones Jr. fight will go on - ESPN
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
Only took 17 years in the making. Should be an interesting fight. ;D
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
We should call it the battle of the wheel chairs. So it also means Bute won't fight Hopkins then, so the Miranda or better Pavlik's trail seem to be a bit closer.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
Hopefully Pac-Mayweather happens in 2019.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
I actually still wanted to see this and I'm glad it is going ahead. I think Jones Jr. will put up a good showing too.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
I think Hopkins will make him pay.

Yep. Jone's speed will give Hopkins trouble. And Hopkins timing and counter right hands will give Jones trouble.
I love em both and may the best Trinidad ass kicker win. lol

I can see Jones outboxing him, but whether Jones can keep it up for 12 good rounds without getting his chin checked too much is the issue. You struggle to imagine Hopkins ever being stopped, but Jones can go at any point in the fight. If Jones manages to go the distance, I can see him being up on points and taking the win.
It's a curious fight for me. It would be hilarious if Jones beats him at this stage of the game and after the Green debacle.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
Roy can mount a big start. He can probably mount an impressive opening maybe stealing the first two three rounds.
But Hopkins has never minded throwing away some opening rounds or boxing negatively to tire an opponent.
I think he'll drag Roy into deep water and literally drown him when they get there.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
I think this is an embarrassment and possibly more insulting to boxing fans than Floyd-Manny being called off. And Roy also filing the protest that the Danny Green fight was stopped prematurely has made me lose all respect for that punk. If it's not him being weight drained, or losing on purpose to get back at his father, I'm sure this mark will come up with another sad excuse once Bernard executes his has-been @ss for good. Hopkins, for pushing for this fight to get made, also loses points as far as I'm concerned.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
He sure doesnt want to lean back on any ropes and play around shoulder rolling , he hasnt got the reflexes any longer and the more you get sparked the more it opens the way for the next little sleep , at his age.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
Jones still has a lot of tools, but his reactions and more importantly legs have slowed right down.
Movement was the one thing he had going against hopkins, I can't see him beating Hopkins by standing infront of him or laying on the ropes.

Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
heheh, yeah I just noticed when I saw my reply... I was thinking what the hell... surely if I'd noticed your post I would have just quoted you and said "I agree"? :p
Guessed we must have posted basically the same thing at the same time... spooky 0_o

Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
What a joke. Hopkins the legacy fighter (). Clearly Old Hop is guaranteed a bigger slice of the pie now and Old Roy is still worth more moneywise than anyone else around that weight.
I would love it if Roy sparked him.

Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH:lolhaha:
Sucked in to Danny Green! After his win over Jones he pranced around and thought he'd been able to play the spoiler, but look what we have here, the rematch he said he'd just ruined is happening and unfortunately for him, its kinda at his expense coz his fight with Hop fell through and I am now wondering (jus like after his Roy figh) who he'll be fighting next?!?
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
Yet another fight where I will be hoping for the elusive double knockout :p

No way Roy can get a KO. He just doesn't have that kill instinct anymore. He could have ended the Trinidad fight anytime he wanted and never pulled the trigger. He spanked Lacy left and right and never pulled the trigger. He showed Anthony Hanshaw what an old man can still do and he never pulled the trigger.
Plus, it's Hopkins.

Green should have been thinking more about exposure than money.

Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
This is nothing more then Hopkins wanting to get a piece of Jones in the ring to avenge a lot of shit talk since the first fight nothing more nothing less...Hopkins is still a Marquee name that is a legit P4P fighter.....This is personal for sure

Regardless there's no way to defend this bullshit. Hopkins is apparently Mr. Legacy & yet he's fighting a guy who was just stopped in a round. Granted Green priced himself out by being a dickhead thinking he was an equal draw, but still this shit is a joke. I hear there's a guy names Chad Dawson who would surely accept terms.
The fact is if either of the two guys whose names we can't mention here were doing this, people would be all over it.

Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
lol. my wish came true when green fought jones. I'm hoping Hopkins can do the same inside of 1 minute :)
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
I hope it is free to watch. :)
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
Shit match up but it would be great if Jones could beat Hopkins just to listen to Hopkins excuses after the fight.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
Funny the irony.Jones gets a young viable but still somewhat green Hopkins many moons ago and now Hopkins gets..(?) a badly faded and shot version of Jones so many years later.Dont want to see this...think Jones could get damaged, and thats fighting mostly anyone who can compete at top level I believe.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
I ain't interested in this fight at all but people can't criticize either for this fight.
Both guys are at the end of the careers and there legacy's are sealed. They should be allowed to get some paydays.

I don't think I said Jones will get a KO. His best chance is obviously to take it the distance and try and box smart.

Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
Cool and I hope to see Mccallum vs Toney 4 on the undercard;D. Now on a serious note; There really is no other way for either 1 of them to go and I hope it is the last 1 for both of them. But if Hopkins does beat Roy then there could be a 3rd fight. And I know we will be looking forward to that 1.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
As much as I would like to see RJJ go out on a win, I know this will be like Calzaghe-Jones. B-Hop will carry him so that the fans in Hopkins mind "Get what they came for"
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
I just can't believe that this is going to be a frickin PPV. :shakehead:
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
As much as I would enjoy watching Jones get his ass kicked. The fight itself is sad. Let's hope for both it's their last fight.

Great news. Speak with your wallets and don't buy this shit.
And Pugilistic - they should be allowed to get some paydays?? Excuse me? Both these guys are millionaires many, many times over - so now they should be allowed to take the piss out of boxing fans by staging this old-fart fest on PPV? Don't think so.
If Hopkins wants a payday he should fight Adamek or move up and fight a heavyweight.
I know he likes to stack the cards in his favour these days but I won't be paying for it. I won't be watching it either. Both of these guys were once great, but Hopkins is a money fighter these days and Roy is damaged goods - and I've no interest in seeing him get damaged further.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
If Hopkins catches Roy with a punch like he caught Calzaghe, Roy will probably look like he did at the end of Tarver II, or Johnson. I don't care to see that again. They should rent out a gym, and have it out in private if they feel they really have to.
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
lol
I think some of you are exaggerating your disgust for the fight.
It'll still be better than a chavez Jr. ppv. ;D
-
Re: Hopkins/RJJ is on - WTF?
God damn it...you mean i saw Danny Green knock out my all time favourite fighter Roy Jones in one round....LIVE!!!! for nothing? I wouldnt mind if green was getting a shot a bhop but this just sucks.

I don't agree with it being a PPV or with the fight happening at all.
I just ain't going to criticise them when they have given so much for the sport.
You trying to tell me Hopkins gets more money fighting Adamek than Jones ? I don't think so.
Hopkins actually wanted Green before Jones, but Green seemed to think he deserved 50-50 split.
Hopkins plans on going to heavyweight after his fight with Jones, It will be against the winner of Haye - Ruiz.
Hopkins is a money fighter ? Whether you like it or not, money concerns every fighter and if i'm correct Hopkins donated his purse from his last fight to charity. Yeah he's all about the money.

He donated it to charity?
He made $200,000 against Ornelas. He makes MORE just doing promotional work for Golden Boy ($250,000 per gig).
All fighters chief concern is how much money they make. Hopkins is the daddy of chasing his most lucrative option. That's why he's fighting shot-to-bits Roy instead of Chad "worth two bob" Dawson.
Legacy over money is something that only occupies fans minds ;)

Hopkins could retire tommorow and still be one of the greatest to ever step in the ring...A top 25 IMO....This like I said is just more or less a score to settle on Hopkins part and Jones well...Right now he has not too many options does he?...IO am sure he believes that since he won the first one he should win the rematch easily....
Hopkins is a charitable person just does not make public note of it...He has donated millions to the city of Philadelphia causes....Big on childrens charities as well....
He is a cheap ass son of a gun though and even cheaper when it comes to spending his money but the man came from nothing and he has seen countless other fighters who made a lot more then him go broke...He is not going to be another cliche

Hopkins is fighting Roy because it's the best "risk-reward" fight over his other options - Dawson, Bute, Adamek or Green.
He already turned down $2 million for Adamek.
Here's Hopkins view when in his pomp - "I'm glad that I have three belts because that means I have three mandatories a year and I can make $2 million or $3 million dollars every time I step in the ring with Donald Duck. I can deal with that."
Hopkins wants the easiest fight for the most money. He's smart. ;)

Heh, maybe he'll call out Taylor next, then try to get Calzaghe out of retirement, but I imagine he's willing to let Clinton Mitchell go...!
Edit: Then again maybe trouncing Pavlik eases his mind about Taylor?
