Berto-Mosley is off
Andre Berto’s Statement: Since the 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday evening, I have been focusing on my family and the Haitian people who are facing an inconceivable battle for survival while still trying to continue to prepare for an opportunity I have dreamt of since childhood. I lost several family members to the earthquake and after two days without word, was relieved to learn that my sister, Naomi and her daughter, Jessica survived, but were left homeless. I have seen the pain in my parents’ eyes as they attempt to understand what has happened to our homeland and recognize a place they once called home.
As a result of this disaster, I am mentally and physically exhausted and therefore I have no choice but to withdraw from my bout on January 30.
Throughout the past six days, I have received an incredible outpouring of support, and I sincerely appreciate everyone’s prayers for the people of Haiti. I hope that everyone will continue to keep the Haitian people in their thoughts and prayers as we work to rebuild this proud nation. The rebuilding of Haiti is not something that will happen overnight, but I am fully dedicated to helping the Haitian people recover from this catastrophic event.
Quite a bummer as it was to be an exciting fight but the reason for that bummer is to my sense very justified.
Wonder if Mosley will fight Mayweather in March?
Bugger!
Totally understandable and hopefully shane can come up with someone else to slug it out with, cause time isn't really on his side.
Gee that brings that disaster a bit closer to home doesnt it!
Understandable and my condolences and prayers are with them all.
Be nice if Boxing threw some profit there way somehow.
I was really looking forward to this fight, i can understand Andre Berto's reason's and i respect that. But im still very disappointed i thought this could of been the FOTY, and it would of been a great coming out party for Andre Berto.
There is now officially no excuse for Mayweather not to fight Mosley next.
Surely Mayweather will demand that Shane undergo USADA testing, seeing as how he's an admitted steroid user and all.
I think a top fighter has to block out everything and focus on his career...and I mean everything.
Selfish, sure, but I think that kind of sacrifice and even heartlessness is what it takes to be elite.
Pacquiao was preparing for Cotto and they were hit by two typhoons, flooding, landslides, over 300 thousand people left homeless, disease outbreaks like cholera usually follow a disaster like that, and there were over 600 dead.
Actually, Manny going ahead with the Cotto fight brought positive feelings to the beleaguered people.
How is Berto pulling out going to do anybody any good?
Then again, this is boxing: a dirty, dirty sport where people in charge believe that everything in life takes a back seat to money.
Whole damn fight cancellation could actually be just a step-aside deal on the QT to make the Mosely/maywetaher fight happen instead.
I put nothing past the people who run boxing, no matter how underhanded or despicable.
That's a harsh assessment given what's being seen on the news everyday with the scope of the disaster and the unimaginable human suffering going on down there, but it is what it is.
.
Even though the majority of people on this board blame Manny for that fight not coming off, the majority of people polled throughout the country blame Floyd. He would be crucified if he let a fight now with Mosley fall by the wasteside. And it's technically the second biggest fight that can be made in boxing so I don't agree with it being low reward, as Shane is arguably the third most popular fighter behind Floyd and Manny. Not to mention it's virtually Floyd's only chance to upstage Manny-Clottey.
Mosley needs to start calling out PBF NOW!!!!!
I agree there is no better fight for PBF than Shane. If he mans up and fights Shane I may finally grow some respect for him, but seems as if he's looking to fight Nate Campbell.:mad::-\
Mayweather has to ask for olympic style testing, I mean Mosley is a known user. And Mosley cause of his ties to Golden Boy you would think would have issues not accepting.
Isn't Mayweather with Heymon to?
Anyway, nothing you can say about Berto really, hell of a thing to have to go through.
Deepest sympathies to Berto in the midst of this crisis. I hope he finds his peace with this soon.
Wait ??? Is Mayweather seriously talking about fighting Nate ??? Really ?
Props to Berto for standing for something bigger than dollar.Hope he can rebound and again garner a high profile match when he and family find a semblance of normalcy.Career defining moments can be few and far between and can pass the idle by.
How is Shane Mosley, coming off a blow out of who was at the time considered the best welterweight in the world a low reward fighter? Will some people say he was too old? Sure, but some people will say anything in an attempt to discredit a fighter. Aside from Pacquiao, there is no one Floyd could fight who would be a higher reward.
Also, if Mayweather goes ahead and fights Campbell now that Mosley is available, I will have no respect for him as a fighter (as much as I'd like to see Campbell get the payday).
I understand Berto not wanting the fight at this point considering all that has happened. I agree with others saying Mayweather/Mosley really should be happening instead. Both fighters are available and ready to fight fairly soon, it needs to happen.
Mayweather can just piss off with this Nate Campbell bullshit.
If Shane beats Floyd, and I'm using the word if here, it takes a lot of shine and momentum off a possible fight with Pacman. Does it still look that interesting for the general public if Floyd loses and he fights Pacman down the line? It's a high risk and monetarily a low reward kind of fight. From a business point of view he would be better off fighting a less dangerous fighter for a tune up and then wait for a showdown with Pacman. The fight will happen later more than likely.
Of course as a fight fan I would like to see the fight, but from a business point of view it's a high risk factor.
Exactly. Now think about it, if Shane beats Floyd, it's Shane-Pacman that the public wants to see really bad now, because that aura of invincibility of FLoyd is gone. Floyd would lose upwards of 40-60 million for a Pacman fight if he loses to Shane. Hence why I said high risk, low reward type of fight. Business wise it doesn't make sense to fight Shane at this point. From a boxing point of view, yes it would be a great fight, but monetarily it could cost Floyd tens of millions if Shane pulls an upset.
I think the difference with Berto is that he has lost family, and still has family in trouble there now.
I had wandered what would happen with this story. I had actually entertained the idea that it would really inspire him and give him a real edge.
I hope things work out for him. Good thing is he's young and still has many great things to aspire to.
I guess I see what you mean there, but if Floyd was so concerned about the money, why didn't he just take the Pacquiao fight then? After all the bullshit surrounding the steroid claims, I can't see either side giving in to the others demands anytime soon. Sad as it is, I think Pac - PBF may be DOA.
Exactly. Berto has lost family members and the survivors need his help. There are a great many things more important than boxing (or any other career) and Berto's family situation is one of them. He's doing a very selfless thing and he deserves to be commended for it.
He was concerned about the money, why do you think he countered with 14 days? And it has been documented that EPO can clear the system within 3-5 days. But Floyd didn't give a damn, he believes he can still beat Pac, I'm sure he's got people digging through this stuff and consulting with experts that if a guy wanted to dope up within those 2 weeks they could. After reading the Al Bernstein article, it makes sense in that FLoyd wanted to fuk with Manny's head. His team does it's homework and isn't that stupid. They found the proverbial chink and psychological weakness in Manny's armor. It just spiral out of control as Bernstein said, he's much more knowledgeable and has contacts in the fight game than anyone else on this board and knows what's going on. Speaking of which I don't even think Pac is really on something, because if he wanted to really dope up he's got experts that will have him off the drugs during random blood tests, and he can cycle during those 2 weeks of cutoff. More than likely its pride and that Oriental notion of "Not losing face" that they are known for.
So what we have now is people thinking Pac is on something, people thinking Floyd was using an excuse to get out of the fight (as done by the ESPN poll with tens of thousands of votes blaming it on Floyd), pissed off fight fans, and a delayed mega match.
That doesn't make any sense. Why didn't they agree to the compromise that Pacquiao proposed then? He was already inside Pacquiao's head because of his ludicrous accusations.
I also don't think it had anything to do with stereotyped notions of Asian peoples not wanted to lose face, but rather Pacquiao's own pride. He doesn't need Mayweather for his legacy, nor does he need the money that the fight would bring. He's the biggest star internationally and from what I know he lives relatively modestly for a person of his wealth. Mayweather, at this point, needs Pacquiao more than Pacquiao needs Mayweather. I'm not sure why he allowed the fight to be scrapped, though I doubt he is scared of Pacquiao, and I hope it somehow gets made in the future, but at this point I doubt it.
Why didn't Floyd agree to Pac's demand of 24 days instead? I can only speculate, but we are dealing with 2 egomaniacs here. Maybe Floyd didn't want to look like he's compromising and bending backwards too much. I'm pretty sure you've read a lot of the links here on how in those 2 weeks that one can use undetectable drugs like EPO that could clear within 3-5 days during those 2 weeks of cutoff that Floyd proposed. If Floyd was really concern of the possible use of PEDs by Pacquiao he would stuck fast to random testing all the way through by USADA, but he said 14 days is okay. And as I've said if a guy is determined to used something like EPO that 14 days is a huge window. Floyd isn't stupid he's got experts and advisors on this. The money was that important to him to say "okay 14 days how about that?" instead of the random blood testing all the way through until fight night.
