Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
Quote:
By Lem Satterfield
Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has mapped out 2011 for two of his biggest stars, Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. This past Saturday in Anaheim, California, Arum met with Cotto and his team, and he spoke with Pacquiao's business adviser Michael Koncz. The way Arum has planned it out, Pacquiao would face Shane Mosley on April 16 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The second step is a rematch between Cotto and Antonio Margarito for the month of June. The winner of Cotto-Margarito would become a frontrunner to face Pacquiao in September.
The preferable scenario is a rematch between Pacquiao and Cotto. They fought in November 2009, with Pacquiao stopping the Puerto Rican star in twelve rounds. Since the loss, Cotto hired trainer Emanuel Steward and moved up in weight to stop Yuri Foreman for the WBA 154-pound title.
Arum said that he is still considering a New York-based, June 11 doubleheader at the new Giants' Stadium that would rematch Cotto and Margarito with the co-feature being Foreman opposite junior middleweight and middleweight prospect Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (40-0-1, 30 KOs).
"I talked with Cotto. And in my meeting with them, I told him, 'Hey, we've got to get you in a big fight -- not yet with Pacquiao -- and then, if you win the big fight, then we can do the rematch with Pacquiao.' So I think that everybody's on the same page," said Arum. "We're going to get the doctors' report on Margarito on Saturday, and then we'll know more about whether we can go with Margarito in June or a little earlier. It would be Margarito going right into a Cotto fight, and then, the winner of that fight, we might put into a rematch with Pacquiao in September. That's a big possibility. So, we'll see."
If Floyd Mayweather Jr. reaches out, he would be the obvious favorite to face Pacquiao in September. Top Rank has tried to contact Mayweather to begin negotiations. Arum has yet to hear back from Mayweather or an individual who represents the boxer.

Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
Can someone tell me again how is that this guy DOESN'T hand pick his opponents? I mean come on. A rematch will prove what exactly?
-
Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
I'm not gonna lie. As a massive Pacquiao fan, I'm disgusted by his actions. Even if it's Bob Arums mastermind plans, it doesn't matter. Pacquiao has been saying "Yes master" to Bob Arum for way to long. Speak up boy. Time to tell daddy no

A massive Pacquiao fan aye? :liar:
But fxck this plan, even if Margarito beats Cotto again he still doesn't deserve a rematch with pac. As for Cotto, he would need to beat Margarito and Martinez to be considered as an oppenent for Pac.
I hope Floyd would quit stalling so this bullshit plan of Arum wouldn't happen.

Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
why isn't pacquiao's camp naming fighters like alexander, khan, marquez, sergio martinez, joan guzman, timothy bradley, maidana, berto, mayweather jr., and hell, since he's the defending WBC jr. middleweight champion, fight someone like alfredo angulo, vanes martirosyan, yuri foreman, cornelius bundrage, erislandy lara and in a year, saul alvarez.
what's up with all these fucking retreads? talk about a protected fight, pacquiao is one of them and this is something his ardent fans cannot deny anymore. the secret is out and pacquiao is getting exposed as a fraud.
-
Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
No way this happens ;D. Think Margarito beats Cotto again and that will prove what in regards to a Manny rematch? Nattas. Likewise A Cotto win over Margarito. At the end of the day....both were lopsided ass whippings. Manny should fight Canello Alvarez instead
-
Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
to tell you the truth, i don't think canelo alvarez is ready for someone like pacquiao yet. he's just starting to learn how to box. sure he has alot of potential but unfortunately, that's all he has is alot of potential. give him about 4-5 tough fights and if he passes with flying colors then i would say yeah, he's ready for pacquiao.
concerning cotto vs. margarito II, i think cotto takes margarito this time. i think cotto is the much better boxer, and the much fresher fighter. both fighters are prone to cuts but margarito is just so damned slow to be a danger to cotto anymore. cotto by wide UD.
-
Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
That's insane. No way this ever happens. Pacquiao has destroyed both men, no way is there any real demand for a rematch with either of them.
Arum is a disgusting man who only wants to keep the money in his own stable. I hope father time takes him away sooner rather that later. The need to keep it all in 'the family' is now getting far too sickening to bear.
-
Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
I imagine this is just a made up story much the same as when Floyd was said to be considering fighting Matthew Hatton a last year.
The trouble for Manny is that aside from Floyd, there aren't really any challengers out there for him.
Berto, argue some, is not ready, Mosley according to the hardcore is done. Marquez is fighting two weight classes below and guys like Martinez and Williams are simply far too big to be realistic fights.
I'd most of all like him to fight Andre Berto if he can't get Floyd next. Or Timothy Bradley. Those two guys are young, unbeaten fighters and would make for exciting fights.
I still don't think he will get credit for fighting either from those on here who hate him, but they represent the best opposition from a competitive fight point of view imo.
Whether they make the most sense financially though I don't know.
-
Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
Somebody asked what does a rematch prove? It proves he can make money. The other thing that many were complaining about is Pacquiao is relatively unproven at 154lbs.
If Cotto is able to beat Margarito convincingly, it would suggest in some peoples minds that the first time they met, Margarito had his wraps loaded. Then people will suggest Cotto has his confidence back and a rematch with Pacquiao at 154lbs to unify the WBA and WBC Light Middleweight titles would have been earned and warranted since Cotto doesn't have to dehydrate to make weight. I don't it is a very hard sell, in fact I can picture Max Kellerman talking up Cotto after he beat Margarito.
If Margarito is able to beat down Cotto, some will say it suggests Margarito didn't have his wraps loaded. The truth is it doesn't really mean anything, but a unification argument can still be made. I think a rematch with Margarito is a much tougher sell but it would still draw a crowd and make pretty good PPV numbers with the help of 27/7.
Personally, I'd much rather see Pacquiao in there with other fighters. I don't really want to see him rematch Margarito ever. I hope Margarito just retires. I'd rather see Pac try take on Martinez.
-
Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
Then he is gonna rematch Barrera or Morales after they fight again. Arum is funny, he's like all the money for me, if i have Pac rematch them, cha ching, wtf if Margarito wins? I'm not watching Pac beat the shit outta him again....I doubt the Cotto fight would be any different at w/e weight. If Cotto kicked the shit out of Margarito even worse than Pac, then maybe.

Yeah that's the whole problem.. F'kn Arum knows he only has his cash cow for the next 3 years max and he wants maximum $$ for his efforts... Which will mean, if his plans go ahead, Pac will be remembered for being on the edge of complete super stardom and because one single man in Floyd wouldn't come to the table, he fought a bunch of meaningless fights for the money.....
Just stupid...
Whether you would use the word "protected" or not, do we really think Arum would put Pac up against someone like Bradley or Berto, who may not bring in as much PPV? Well f'k that, I believe they will bring in the same or more than a Pac v Margarito/Cotto II.....
Arum has his head up his ass thinking of his tiny little stable of 4 fighters as the be all and end all of the universe... Guess what, Jaws 4 was a bad idea, just because one time people watched the first bit, doesn't just mean you do it all over again to make the money...
But if money is all he cares about, fine, try to convince us all that Pac vs Cotto is as interesting to the rest of the world as it obviously is in Arum's head...
Promoters ruining boxing.... It is just a slight step below Judges ruining boxing.. And a step up from Refs ruining boxing....
Either way, give Pac his three years of legacy.... Not 3 years of lining Arum's pockets fighting meaningless fights...
Even as a fan, I think this sh!t stinks..... I won't agree with the word "Fraud" that mascara used.. Pac is still the best fighter going around and an ATG... But for f'k sake he's been around long enough and is at the top of the sport to the point he can dictate weights for other fighters and for their title belts,,,, then he can surely tell a big fat prick like Arum that he wants to fight someone who may pose a challenge and something new and interesting to face, for the love of god damn boxing for one.....
So I agree with everything pretty much everyone has said...

I don't blame Arum or Manny for not fighting the likes of Berto and Bradley just yet. Right now he can make more money against more established names in fights that will probably sell more on PPV.
The onus is on guys like Berto and Bradley to win breakout fights that put them into the mainstream.
A boxers career is only a brief one and every fighter wants to maximise his earning potential.
I'm pleased that Shane will maybe get another last big payday, he's been a great boxing servant and deserves to go out with some big fights. I also thought he beat Mora by at least a couple rounds, as did the entire HBO team. And say you want about Mosley's stamina being shot, but he was all heart against Mora in the championship rounds, taking the fight to the bigger guy and he should have won that fight.
As much malinged as Mora is, I don't think he is an easy night's work for a smaller fighter coming up either.
I think he would give a decent (albiet rather ugly and negative) account of himself against virtually anybody from 154 down. He's hard to look good against, and I don't see even guys like Floyd or Manny blowing him out.
Mosley picked a rather stupid opponent to look good against in his comeback fight, and was then very unlucky with the judging imo.
A Mosley Pacquaio fight is far from a bad matchup.

Pac vs Mosley is a MUCH better fight than Margarito/Cotto... At least it's something new... And Mosley aside from looking bad against Mayweather (who hasn't), is still a decent fighter with good attributes.... I think Manny will destroy him, but anything other than Cotto or Margarito 2 is a pass for me in that respect...
There is just no excuse IMO for selling a second Cotto or Margarito fight when Pac dispatched of both of them so encouragingly the last time around.... Even if Cotto/Margarito have a cracking turn back the clock fight and one of them looks amazing, I still feel like it'll be a fight for the money..... And if it happens Pac may as well have an even shittier training camp to at least make the fight look less one sided, considering it will be taking the place of a more interesting new fight..

Oh dear........ Maybe 2011 is the year when Arum will finally file to be his own boxing organisation and begin manufacturing belts and taking sanction fees from their own fighters.... Ha

Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
fast forward to 2011 this plan wont happen at all, same as other stupid plans! a rematch with guys you pretty much beat up to a pulp wont generate much excitement for paying boxing fans.
-
Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
These rematches would do horribly. How can you market a rematch of two such one-sided beatings? I can't imagine anybody being stupid enough to buy into either fight.
-
Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
Arum is a genius!!!
First of all, he's clearing up the biggest mistake Pacman ever made. Saying he's going to fight for 3 more years. Pacman saying that, slowed the push for Mayweather to get into the ring with him.
Secondly, Arum put together possible and legit fights. Fights just to get Mayweather thinking, that possibly, the mega money fight won't happen. The more chances Manny take, the less money will be on the table if Mayweather don't jump soon.
Third, Margarito vs Cotto is legit!!! And might actually happen. Just as a fog! Not as a possible elminator for Pacman. But no one asked, what will Cotto do until then? When was his last fight? He needs to fight soon, if he's going to get in the ring with Margarito again. Sitting for this long then getting back in the ring with the person that maybe took something away from his boxing life, is a bad move.
Fourth, Arum is going to build up these potential future opponents without saying anything. He's going to make Berto, Bradley, Alexander, Williams, Martinez, JMM and even Mayweather fight each other so they can raise their stock and elminate potential opponents. Bigger pay days.
Finally, Roach is also doing the hand picking. Bradley and Alexander is not being mention because, Roach have Khan in the same division. Raising his on stock in the boxing world. Freddie also have Jcc Jr and Vanes Martirosyan(I think)in his camp. So Martinez and Cotto is not going to happen neither.
All that said, if Mayweather fight Pacman, all the above money will be made in one night.
This is a business!!! Arum and Roach is just playing their cards right.
Respect!!!
P.S.
1. Pacman will sign to fight Mosley before Floyd's court thing is over.
2. Floyd will fight Cotto or the winer of Bradley vs Alexander at 147. Perferrably the winner of Bradley vs Alexander.
3. If Floyd fights Cotto, Berto vs the winner of Bradley vs Alexander.
4. Jcc Jr will fight Cotto. Winner fight Margarito
5. Freddie Roach(Vanes) will win by points over Manny Steward(K-9) for an 154 title. Then Williams will make another run at Pacman.

That was my strat, play hard to get. IMO Pac doesnt need Mayweather at all, he's got his legit legacy of fighting guys his own size and even larger.

Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
I think Cotto has a better chance against Pacquiao than would Margarito a second time around. Cotto screwed himself big time by going with Joe "WTF?" Santiago in his corner before getting himself a REAL professional. Cotto was jabbing Manny well in the first few rounds, before deciding to go toe-to-toe with Pac and getting hit 5 times for every one he hit Manny with. Bad strategy. Emmanuel would fix these bad game plans. Cotto might still not win, but he'd be more competitive than would Margarito.
That being said, I also realize there's better fights for Pac out there, such as Berto. I'd give anything to watch Manny dismantle Berto.

exactly, and to add to that Pac and Miguel are my top 2 favorites i don't want them fighting each other anymore.

Re: Ha! Pacquiao To Face Winner of Margarito/Cotto 2
i actually think cotto would have a great chance against pacquiao at 154, without getting a catchweight. for instance, when cotto fought yuri foreman, he looked really strong and fast. maybe this is his ideal weight. also, morales mentioned that cotto had a novice trainer for the pacquiao fight. if cotto does have his rematch with emanuel steward as his trainer, i'd pick him to defeat pacquiao, without a catchweight at 154, by TKO.
