His gameplan was very similar to the first fight for the most part but what he did do that i didn't think he was capable of doing was tieing Margarito up on the inside, staying away from the ropes and at times even pushing Margarito back.
That allowed him to control the pace of the fight better and against Margarito being able to control the pace is key. He also targeted Margarito's eye which was another smart move.
It was a good win.
I love when people say Cotto ran. Of course he is going to move and box as much as possible. He is a guy that should still be at 147. He doesn't have a chin. Why should he stand and trade with Margarito until late in a fight after he has softened him up. Last couple of rounds you could see cotto feeling like Margarito could hit him but it wasn't going to do serious damage.
Did Margarito use illegal wraps in his first fight? I don't know. I think he did, but no one other than his former trainer and Margarito will ever know. I do like what Manny Steward said after watching video of Margarito getting his hands taped last night (something along the lines of Margarito was doing like basically all fighters and watching his hands get wrapped intently). Steward was saying he still finds Margarito's explanation about not knowing what happened prior to the Mosley fight to not be credible.
Margarito has sounded like a guilty guy to me. he said he didn't know what was happening prior to the Mosley fight. That sounds like bullshit to me. You are there, your hands are getting wrapped, you are watching it be done.
And if Margarito were telling the truth and he was oblivious, then why does he insist that he didn't have any plaster for his fight with Cotto??????????????????????
If you claim you didn't know and couldn't tell that someone put on illegal wraps in one fight then how would you have known and been able to tell about previous fights???
Great for Cotto to get this one done...I am mexican boxing fan and believe me when I say I knew Margarito was cheating, as much as I like good bouts between Puerto Rico-Mexico boxers, fair is fair, Cotto seems to be a great representative for Puerto Rico, on the contrary Margarito is going from bad to disastrous as person, Cotto is right, he DOES NOT deserve any respect...as far as i'm concerned even Cintron can beat Margarito now, he cheated against him too....Please don't think all mexicans are biased or cheaters, real boxing fans know when somebody wins fairly or represents the sport with dignity...let me know your thoughts....arriba Puerto Rico

Cant take anything away from Cotto. He had a gameplan that he effectively stuck to and his stamina was right on point.
I haven't seen the fight and I picked Margarito to beat Cotto in rematch based on style and both have been through the shredder a bit. News flash....I was wrong. Not quite sure what else fans have to be wrong about etc?
It sounds as if Cotto fought a very similiar fight to first but focused on center ring and punching off side movement rather than that dreaded straight line to ropes and going square, but again, I have no clue. His punching was always effective in first fight and Margarito has always been a stone faced and balls to the wall pinata at times but full of pressure and volume. I don't think Cotto fans do him any service at all by trumping an unknown "who gotcha" with gloves. You dont know, I dont know...what we know is Tony's face fell apart this time. Something has to be said for Cottos improvments and adjustments I'd think and he zeroed in on fk'd up eye and fought smart by sounds of it. In the big picture and on a whole I am cool with Cotto getting his revenge and think he has more options and gears than a Margarito in regards to future matches and remains more fresh.
This is a good post and bang on imo. Cotto didn't need to zero in on the eye, it wasn't going to hold up one way or another. I also don't think it was a determining factor though in that Cotto was still fresher than Margarito by the 10th and didn't take the same kind of punishment through the early rounds that he did the first time. From reading the fight thread in here people seemed to see it panning out the same way because Cotto used the same tactics.. Fact is Margarito wasn't getting to him at all in most of the early rounds though.Quote:

fully agree on all points, IMO this has been Cotto's best showing since the Mosley fight, he just all around looked rejuvenated, most of his old form back, as you said more use of the straight right which packs plenty power (watch the Torres fight), but he didn't go to the body as much, it wasn't until he had the first 7 in the bag and that he started trading that he started to mix in the left under then back up top, if he would have stepped to his right while slipping off the ropes and turning Margarito process he would have been able to bang that drum all night, either way i'm just thrilled that he looked as great as he did last night really should knock off some of that he's finished or shot bullshit cause he didn't punch, move, or give any indication of a shot fighter last nightQuote:

Margarito first of all fought Mosley a full yr after he fought and lost to Cotto and after Mosley's lackluster performance to Mayorga, Cotto won the fight clearly, don't confuse a competitive fight with a toss up, he hasn't had ANY REAL POWER SINCE BEING FOUND OUT, I'm willing to bet anyone on this forum that the Cotto that fought Saturday night would give Pacquiao all he could handle compared to the one who took him on 2 yrs ago, he's in a good place mentally right now and is surrounded by a good team, something he didn't have back then, don't get how anyone can try and spin it around and try to make Margarito the victim here hahaQuote:
