Am I the only one who thinks he is a bit overrated?

I agree. As of right now he's being overrated but he is a work in progress and will be a real good fighter in a few years time.
He whupped up on Mosley pretty good. I think Canelo is being moved along at a good clip and he's on pace to have a dynamic career.
Every time I see him fight he looks better. Golden Boy will bring him along slowly and he's still growing so they're not going to rush him. Apparently he's going to be headlining a PPV card next time out. It'll be interesting to see who they put him in with. Probably Kirkland.
I don't get this Canelo is overated stuff? Based on what?
I've never seen a 21 year old so relaxed and composed (Almost to a fault). He throws his shots with perfect technique and has superb speed and power.
What's the beef? All I can think of is that he doesn't fight the whole round.
He worked Mosley over better than both Floyd and Pac. Seemed like Mosley was up for it as well but just couldn't do a thing. (who does need to retire now)
He's obviously an elite fighter because he has absolutely destroyed all of the gate-keepers. Cotto vs Alvarez would be a great test.
Who's overrating him? Everything I read or hear has him pegged as a young and talented fighter with a big fanbase who could be a top-level fighter IF he proves himself in some big fights over the next few years.
Sounds about right to me.
I agree with Lyle. It appears Alvarez is shaping up to be a real talent. He's not quite there yet, but he does some great things on offense.
He's coming along quite nicely, i don't think he's overrated. I think even during the post fight interview with Merchant and Mayweather, Larry mentions that Golden Boy has told him that Canelo is not ready for Floyd yet, which is true. They are taking their time with him and building him up so he can be the next Golden Boy PPV star. It's way too early to throw him in their with Floyd, Sergio Martinez etc.
You can't really over rate a 21 year old with a 40+ fight undefeated record! That says it all.
Being 21 and beating any of the recent names on his CV is impressive. Regardless of who he is or where he is from.
To be honest, even if I heard of a 21 year old kid beating up Mosley or Hatton in sparring I'd be impressed.
i think he is gone to be big in the fiture
No, the kid is a freakin m1 abrams at 21 I can just imagine when he peaks:o
I think for a 21 year old he's far better than Amir Khan who's 25. Is he a sublime pugilist? No but he's a hard puncher whose fighting style reminds me of Arthur Abraham. Covers up..covers up boom explodes. Now in terms of punches thrown he's very different but the mentality is the same.
A busy worker or someone who crowds him will give him a nightmare but people who stand in front of him will more often than not lose.
Do you no what gets to me he's got red hair and a Mexican strange,;D he is a very good fighter but let him
mature a little bit more. For his age he is something else remember it's easy to fuck up a good fighter,
as I have said in the past I would hate to have some of you as manager or promoters.
If some of you had a pet house brick you would break it.
He is very good and a potential great. Give him a break. Slowly but surely he is improving and he has years left to progress in. He really does figure an opponent out before dismantling their gameplan and fights with a maturity well beyond his age.
Alvarez is where he's suppose to be at this stage in his career. Anybody calling him overrated obviously doesn't know much about the sport. Golden Boy has done an outstanding job with him so far. 21 years old and he's already pulling in 7 figures
I don't see that they need to give him an elite level fight just yet. If he's struggling to make 154 then he might only have a couple more fights against guys like Kirkland at 154 and then move up, so they can give him another few B level guys and give him time to mature properly. He's going to be great to watch though.
Canelo is a good fighter, big and strong and beaten good fighters so far. He is getting better. He still has his faults and I think a great quick and busy fighter would beat him like Floyd or a prime Shane. Alvarez has a good future but he has had a lot of fights at the age of 21 so he may not carry on until he reaches 30 at this rate.
Most boxers coming out of Mexico have to model their pro careers this way. The amatuer boxing programs in Mexico are basically non-existent and thats why the decent ones pop off 30-40 wins against scrubs before they start fighting some half way decent opponents. That being said, I don't think Canelo is overrated at all. You have to be careful to distinguish between how someone is RATING someone, and their EXCITEMENT about them. A ton of people are excited about Canelo. And why wouldnt we be? Everyone sick of the Floyd/Pac dance around. Now we can hopefully look forward to Alvarez/Chavez.
Unless, they make a mistake moving Canelo up the ladder, I believe he's the next big star of the sport. The only problem I see for him, if it is indeed a problem because it's more like a limitation, is that he's really too short to be a middleweight, and thus, he'll be confined to 154 for most of his career.
Not overrated but overhyped a bit. He's good, he's not great but his activity level is nice and he captivates fans and makes sparks, certainly cannot fault that. He does however need a showdown of sorts with a viable fellow live threat. Grabbing scalps of a retread in Cintron and a shadow in Mosley is valuable and offers depth but I really need to see him punched squarley in the mouth by a guy who has a career to build and a future to lose and has not settled into his 'role' so to speak. He's doing what he needs to do, beat people up but he's far from a certain long term thing to me at least.
Alvarez is where he should be right now considering that he doesn't have much of an amateur background. Same holds true for Chavez Jr.
Agreed kidboxin. Other than the obvious reasons, the reason i want to see the Alvarez/Chavez fight is because these two could not be more opposite in terms of their journey in the boxing game. Canelo, from what i've read, came from nothig. Quit school at age 13, and took a tough road to stardom. Chavez had it handed to him. Coasted off his daddys name at the beginning of his career. I'm not saying he isn't good, but hes had the lights on him since he turned pro, Canelo had to earn it in my opinion.
Canelo is better and we will hopefully see that in a few years when they share the ring.
He is good, but he isn't at the ceiling or level that some people overrate him to yet. He'll get there but let's not rush him. Let's not forget he still struggled with Gomez, he still has a lot to learn, but instead of fighting on ESPN he's fighting on HBO PPV's. He is right where he should be right now actually but given the exposure people are trying to place him higher than he needs to be.
He's not overrated but I'd like to see him face a Cotto, Kirkland, maybe Williams type challenge
But he's fun to watch, youthful, shows improvement with each fight & has the ability to go far
i know what you mean but I just think there is something special about him.
Mosley looked in top condition the other day still keeping alot of his speed. Conelo stepped up and delt well with him. A competitive fight but Conelo still won quite convincingly.
I think a couple more fights against top ten fighters then he is ready for someone right at the top. Not Floyd or Pac but everyone else.
