Every time I see him fight he looks better. Golden Boy will bring him along slowly and he's still growing so they're not going to rush him. Apparently he's going to be headlining a PPV card next time out. It'll be interesting to see who they put him in with. Probably Kirkland.

40 fights at 21 years old? That's not that slow. He's not exactly fighting pushovers either. He's not fighting elites, but he will have a big fight next year I would guess.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

I don't see that they need to give him an elite level fight just yet. If he's struggling to make 154 then he might only have a couple more fights against guys like Kirkland at 154 and then move up, so they can give him another few B level guys and give him time to mature properly. He's going to be great to watch though.

Canelo is a good fighter, big and strong and beaten good fighters so far. He is getting better. He still has his faults and I think a great quick and busy fighter would beat him like Floyd or a prime Shane. Alvarez has a good future but he has had a lot of fights at the age of 21 so he may not carry on until he reaches 30 at this rate.

If he keeps earning what he has been he'll be retired long before then!

I just hope he keeps this pace of fights, he's probably fighting every 3 months at the minute.

Most boxers coming out of Mexico have to model their pro careers this way. The amatuer boxing programs in Mexico are basically non-existent and thats why the decent ones pop off 30-40 wins against scrubs before they start fighting some half way decent opponents. That being said, I don't think Canelo is overrated at all. You have to be careful to distinguish between how someone is RATING someone, and their EXCITEMENT about them. A ton of people are excited about Canelo. And why wouldnt we be? Everyone sick of the Floyd/Pac dance around. Now we can hopefully look forward to Alvarez/Chavez.

Unless, they make a mistake moving Canelo up the ladder, I believe he's the next big star of the sport. The only problem I see for him, if it is indeed a problem because it's more like a limitation, is that he's really too short to be a middleweight, and thus, he'll be confined to 154 for most of his career.

Not overrated but overhyped a bit. He's good, he's not great but his activity level is nice and he captivates fans and makes sparks, certainly cannot fault that. He does however need a showdown of sorts with a viable fellow live threat. Grabbing scalps of a retread in Cintron and a shadow in Mosley is valuable and offers depth but I really need to see him punched squarley in the mouth by a guy who has a career to build and a future to lose and has not settled into his 'role' so to speak. He's doing what he needs to do, beat people up but he's far from a certain long term thing to me at least.

Alvarez is where he should be right now considering that he doesn't have much of an amateur background. Same holds true for Chavez Jr.

Agreed kidboxin. Other than the obvious reasons, the reason i want to see the Alvarez/Chavez fight is because these two could not be more opposite in terms of their journey in the boxing game. Canelo, from what i've read, came from nothig. Quit school at age 13, and took a tough road to stardom. Chavez had it handed to him. Coasted off his daddys name at the beginning of his career. I'm not saying he isn't good, but hes had the lights on him since he turned pro, Canelo had to earn it in my opinion.
